The unapologetic, shameless and obsessive shipping of television characters may be a tad creepy and extremely weird, but it is not a homo-obsession. It's a good thing for nerdy teenage girls such as myself to have as a hobby. Your poem is lovely. No need to be pissed. Homophobes are on the endangered species list--treat them gently. Their last few decades are going to be unpleasant enough for them.
firebeatsroses I'll have a crack at it: There once was a man named Phil K Who shouted against all things gay. Ranting and raving. The way he's behaving Makes you wonder if he's secretly that way. *bows to all*
I think it's probably because the fans make such a big deal of their sexuality and the show isn't about that - the audience doesn't need to know. I personally don't care what sexuality Sherlock is. The show isn't a romance and it isn't meant to be; romance would ruin the whole crime/mystery part of the show. John is married to Mary but the show doesn't focus on their romance at all; although I like Mary's character if it focused on their marriage and not the casesthe show would just another boring romantic drama.
"I think it is a show about a detective, not a detective show." - Mark Gatiss Sorry, but Sherlock actually IS a romance. It's not about solving crimes, it's about Sherlock's growth as a character and the incredibly poignant relationship between him and John. The cases in season 3 (besides the Mayfly Man) were so weak that it was almost embarrassing. There's no romance shown between John and Mary because there IS no romance between John and Mary. I expect they'll be divorced pretty soon, or Mary's going to disappear.
Yi Ting Ang but Mary morstan had died already, in 70-something. So new Mary has not to die, because, you know, the origin Mary is dead already. Just my thoughts, and i say that as a big johnlock-fan, they are meant for each other 😍
They don't *need* to have sex. They're soul mates! In His Last Bow, John dreams about Sherlock, and, during Sherlock's hallucination, he regains his strength at the though of John being in danger. They would kill and die for each other. There's no truer love than that.
It's not about actually having to show them having sex or something. It's just about daring to be open about an actual non-platonic love relationship. There have definitely been these kind of hints throughout the story. It would be a huge step for lgbtq representation on tv if they decided to make such a realtionship between two lead characters obvious at the end or near the end of the story. It's not about sexualization, it's about the recognition of the possibility of same-sex non-platonic relationships. You can perfectly portray a love relationship (not "just" friendship) without including sex. It's done all the time. Why are gestures like for example kissing, hugging etc. automatically super sexualized when it's about gay couples, but never about heterosexual couples. If you had a heterosexual couple in a tv show, would you insist on it not needing to be sexual only because you could be afraid of them actually doing something people do in a love relationship?
+Anna Toor Could you please write that or a similar text to Moffat and Gatiss. I liked how you wrote it and think you're totally right. Besides if they would take that step, it would be just brilliant.
exactly. It's already cannon, it's just not a sexual love affair, but a romantic very intense friendship. People want to have clear cuts and rigid little boxes to put the characters in, but there's a huge grey area between friendship and a sexual relationship, I'd say.
I absolutely love Mary :D at first I thought she was going to be a sort of a block between Sherlock and John like John's earlier girlfriends (frankly because the girlfriends had to compete with Sherlock for John's attention) but I was really surprised when she was happy and cool with John and Sherlock's friendship. Even Sherlock approved of her which made me so ecstatic. She didn't diminish John and Sherlock's chemistry, which was fantastic. Mary just fitted in so perfectly. It made the whole season even better and I loved it even better.
Martin's answer: no idea let's turn this question round onto you Mr Interviewer, enlighten me. Benedict's answer: POSH STUFF POSH STUFF did he say tit-something? POSH STUFF POSH STUFF
The day that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle comes back from the dead and says, "By the way, I totally wanted John and Sherlock to get together" is the day that Johnlock shippers die from shock.
I very much like the actress who they've picked to play Mary. She seems so petite and agreeable and very very perfect for John (not considering she's also Martin Freeman's partner in real life as well).
Oh, com'on, do you really think there wasn't ANY other actress in the WHOLE UK able to play it better?! Oh how she must have struggled a lot to get the role, hard auditions, you know.. -.- It all screams BYE BYE MERITOCRACY. If I was any other of the actresss that couldn't get their chance, I wouldn't be happy. They even tried to sell the "oh the fact she's Martin's partner adds something to the whole thing and to their chemistry".. now if it was true, you should hire the wives of all actors to play their girlfriends on screen. It's very sad just Martin - somebody who struggles for years before becoming really famous - didn't think it might be not opportune. And it's twice sad people are totally overlooking the problem just because she's Martin's partner and they don't wanna say anything he wouldn't like. I don't care if she had that scandal because she has huge debts, I don't see why she has to pay them working on the show.
lizbennetgenova i'm absolutely sure there are several actresses more than capable of taking on the role of Mary. only difference is that ms. abbington was just at the right place at the right time. she's an actress herself and actually worked with martin freeman in other productions. so the producers/directors are assured of the chemistry between them.
that's what I said.. people justify it with their chemistry, while to me it's a nonsense.. faking chemistry on screen is what every actor does and chemistry out of screen isn't necessary (and in any case, Martin could have become good friend with another actress as he became a friend to Benedict). Personally, I think it's very annoying people defend a choice which is balantly unfair only because they're huge fans of the show (I'm a huge fan as well, but what is unfair is unfair). I don't even think there were auditions, I guess they just gave the role to her point.
lizbennetgenova The only thing is, Benedict was handed the role of Sherlock as well. No one else was given the opportunity to audition for the position of Sherlock Holmes. For all we know, there might have been someone better. Amanda might not be the "best person in the entire UK" but it doesn't mean that she won't be a good Mary. If Moffat and Gatiss didn't think she'd be a good fit, I highly doubt that she would have been approached by them just for the sake of "chemistry". They love this show far too much to consider screwing it up just so they could include one of their friends. I think we should give her a chance to prove that she was meant to be cast as Mary. In terms of the world of Sherlock, Moffat and Gatiss know what they're doing, so I'm not too worried about the possibility of Amanda messing up.
S Mar you are right about Benedict, even if it's slightly different as a situation if you ask me, because Sherlock is the main character and they wrote the show having him in mind as their only possible Sherlock since the start. I agree with you chances are Amanda won't mess it all up (even if she was terrible, which I don't think, she is not the main character on the show, so she could never ruin it). I just think it's unfair she has been given the chance of playing Mary just because she's Martin's partner and sadly this is what happened, in my opinion. Anyway, I think people will end up liking Amanda/Mary in any case, because the script will lead them to do so (I bet she will be smart and supportive of SH, more than in the original stories, because that's the cheapest way to make people love her and for some reason they want people to love her, they have made it clear enough) and people will blindly follow. Just see how they already love Anderson, it's really easy for Moffat and Gatiss to play with the public's response. Anway, it's -2 … I can't wait, really.
I think the reason so many people adore the idea of Sherlock and John being in a romantic relationship, is that it is so rare to find one with complexity and depth in mainstream media at all, heterosexual or otherwise. Quite often, a romantic interest is just thrown in to the story and five seconds later they’re together… just ‘because.’ Little chemistry, little relationship development, and the audience is expected to be invested. Mary and John is a prime example. Do you blame the fans for wanting something more? Because the fanfiction etc. is usually not mindless smut, it’s a genuine exploration of a deep bond between two characters that is rarely done in television these days. You hear a lot of people saying ‘Why are you always undervaluing the ~meaning of friendship~ by wanting these two men to be properly in love???’ Yeah, because the world is suffocating with homosexual relationship representation. It’s also funny how you never really seem to hear that about the heterosexual couples. But whatever. I’m not even going to go into what Sherlock and John being romantically involved would mean to the non-heterosexual audience. (A lot. Basically.) If the show’s writers did choose to make Sherlock and John in an openly romantic relationship, I could write an essay about why it would be amazing.
Christine Hudson you got to admitt its funny. she must have been brainwashed by all the naughty fans. this is from her twitter amanda abbingtonVerifierat konto @CHIMPSINSOCKS 'comes between John and Sherlock' can mean ALL manner of things...
I don't agree but I respect your freedom to say it - shame about all the uptight prissy criticism of Martins hobbit/elf joke! Apparently jokes about fictitious characters having sex is now encouraging rape - I really do wish some people would just grow up!
totaly agree on that one. he realised how it came out just the second he said it, and acknowledged what it sounded like, and therfore said the "R" word and then people stopped thinking.
You are so right! I really don''t understand quite where all this came from. He was actually talking about drugging the elf to make it fall over, if you take the accompanying hand gesture inot account as well, so as to sort out the height difference. Perhaps he should not have pointed out what some people might think - that seems to be where the whole host of 'offfended' 'some people' suddenly decided to take the whole thing out of its actual context. When you look at all the stuff about a homosexual relationship between him & Benedict / Watson & Sherlock people don't seem to think that may be offensive to them both - but thats OK - they are expected to put up with it - they even were forced into reading some of it out at the BFI event which they were obviously VERY uncomfortable about - but that is apparently OK as well. Drugging an elf is however beyond decency apparently!!
I do love the idea of Johnlock and I love that the show constantly feeds into it with the gay jokes, but I do think that they absolutely LOVE and admire each other in a platonic way and somehow that makes it even more powerful...if anything, I took from some of the specials that have been on lately, they mentioned that in past films and shows and even in the books themselves that many have seen it as a man who loves another man but the other man doesnt know it and especially after season 3 fans can read into that.
I hope they will continue with Johnlock, they don't have to make it too obvious like rubbing it in everyone's face, that would be inappropiate of course. But I would like to know what's really going on between them at least in one episode... I want to know what Sherlock feels, and he doesn't have to speak it aloud, but at least in his mind palace or whatever. D:

"And they were saying they were going to introduce a hus- uh, wife for Sherl- uh, Watson" I think what she really wanted to say was they were going to introduce a husband for Sherlock. And I'm sure we all know who that husband would be.
5:27 - "(Mary) sees a lot of herself in (Sherlock).." This was the most heartbreaking scene of HLV when Sherlock explained that John had chosen Mary based on his subconscious attraction to dangerous situations and people. In that moment. So in a way, John is "attracted" to Sherlock because of the dysfunctional danger he represents. Therefore, it was heartbreaking seeing Mary's nervousness while John was processing all this in the run up to Christmas. She thought John understood her like he understood Sherlock. John's acceptance of Mary showed him finally understanding and accepting his dysfunctional relationship with Sherlock.
I laughed at 3:25 - 3:30 when Amanda messed up- first she couldn't decide whether the gender of the spouse was male or female, then whether John or Sherlock was getting married. I feel kinda mean, but it was funny, especially seeing as the title of the vid says the relationship is only a bromance. Ha ha ha ha ha... haaa... ignore me.
I figure she was subconsciously thinking of the idea of them being a couple and just got confused and said what she was only meant to be thinking. It is funny though :)
I completely agree with Amanda, I absolutely loved the relationship that Sherlock and John had, but I think Mary makes that relationship even better with her own witty, kind personality
If the fans felt she was coming between John and Sherlock they would eat her alive. It would not be good for the show at all, so I really love how this played out. And I love how concerned she is about her character not coming between them!
Wellll I'll be happy the day they make two male characters romantically involved in a slow growing way where it isn't completely obvious and is something like this show- where we ship the two actors but never believe it'll happen, and then it does. That'd be beautiful and new from what we see today in male and male romance films (those are good too though)
And a show where romance is not the focus, but we still get so invested in those characters friendship/relationship that it matters almost as much, if not more, than the action. So basically this show hahaha. I'm just ready to see something new and unpredictable and more r e a l for us LGB folks
KeiyaValecourt not bad idea...just not here, not in Sherlock..because it's so rare this kind of relationship onscreen between two men, this kind of friendship, which they think does not exist anymore, but it does, peoplle really can be true friends, really love each other more than theirselves, they can have their personal lives without ruining the friendship and yes, they can do anything, I mean enything for each other and for their friendship...this is just really inspiring and I don't think there is a place for some kind of romance in here...they are just perfect the way they are (gosh I talk too much)
Nino Buishvili I am perfectly with you :-D I really enjoy reading Johnlock Fanfics and this stuff, it's pretty amazing how much creativity there's in this "fandom world" and there are people I would by books from, if they would write in "real-life" , if you understand what I want to say.... But for the "real" BBC films, it is perfect at it is. You described it well enough so that I don't have to ... But concerning Keiya's comment: I would like it to if there would be a little more LGBT stuff on TV... but let's wait some time.... (sorry for the bad english)
+Nino Buishvili See but I have a problem with that logic. Because it sounds hypocritical to me. I'm not talking about you specifically but the general public. Because when two characters of the same sex are really close friends the general public says "Why can't they be really good friends, why does it have to be romantic and sexual?" But every time two characters of the opposite sex are reeeeally good and close friends that same general public goes rooting for them to get together because 'oh they're so meant for each other' and suddenly nobody cares about deep friendships anymore. Do you see my point or do you think that's not the case? So here I'm going to invert the situation. We've got two male character who are really close and good friends. My question is aren't they obviously meant for each other? Why does their relationship have to be friendship-based only, why can't they have romantic&sexual feelings for each other too?
I'm glad that the relationship between the characters has stayed platonic. I mean, I would not take Mark and Steven seriously as writers if they made it more than what the relationship is already. I don't want a kiss/makeout/sex thing, to me, that ruins the chemistry Sherlock and John have from the beginning until now. There is a friendship between two characters that show that they care deeply for one another. That's how it should stay. I ship Johnlock, but, I really don't want it to happen on the show.
Here's one very clear fact: Gatiss and Moffat have admitted that they often lie when asked about what's happening in the show. Mark has said that they have to because otherwise they would spoil the plans for the show.
Phil K We know the characters aren't gay, idiot. We aren't zombies for gays. Whatever gay assumptions we write down, US STRAIGHT WOMEN, IN OUR OWN FUCKING FAN-FICTION, is not a demand for the actual characters to be gay. We get it. You're a male fan of the series, and you don't want to feel gay for liking the show, so you go on these tirades against people insinuating that Sherlock and John are gay, but the only brainwashing going on here has been done on you since you've clearly been taught to hate a sexual orientation you don't understand.
Daezy Gilder Someone is trolling the JohnLock posts. Of course, since he is taking so much time post on every single JohnLock comment, that says more about his pre-occupation with the subject than anyone else's. :P
@@goldyd144 Of course Sherlock and John are "not gay," Sherlock has only no real interest in women, John said two times "I'm not gay," but he actually never said he's straight. And bisexuality really exist.
I love how they have to specify that it's platonic. lol. Sure, the show would be even more awesome if they were gay but I actually love that Sherlock is asexual. That's a very underrepresented sexuality in the media.
Well personally I don't think Sherlock is asexual. And Benedict has said in an interview that people come up to him and thank him for playing an asexual character, but he's told them he's not sure that's really true. I do think Sherlock and John's relationship is more than platonic, and I really hope that the actors actually aware of that but not letting anything on.
They need to KEEP it platonic. Keep the lovely bromance, but nothing more than bromance. The two characters contrast each other so well, and the on-screen affection is undeniable, and absolutely intriguing. It becomes tiring to see same old love triangles between protagonist characters, but this is just lovely. Very well done.
***** To be honest Shelock's relationship with Watson was pondered in Victorian times too. And Many writers don't go out and say controversial things like that. Not disagreeing, just thought I should point that out.
Thank you farfangled for expressing my thoughts also. Echoed clearly by both actors. What does it take for fans to accept that all relationships between two guys do not HAVE to be gay? The "brotherly" love of two men who love each other as brothers is just as compelling as the viewers and figures show for both Sherlock and Merlin. It is beautiful thing, just as beautiful as the love between any two people, whether those two people are brothers, sisters, gay or otherwise. To quote the wonderful John Lennon "it does not matter who you love, when you love, or how you love, it matters only that you love".
Brilliant show, fantastic actors, wonderful writers! The best thing on TV ever and I go back to just 3 channels in black & white so I've seen an awful lot of TV! Nothing else has even come close to the sheer magic this combination creates!!!!
I suppose that would depend on how he's wearing it. If it's straight, he probably has someone come by and do it. If he's wearing it naturally curly, then product is in order or else it will look frizzy.
Personally I like Amanda better with the brunette hair. Obviously going by the fact that her eyebrows match in this video it leaves me wondering why they bothered to dye her hair blonde in the series. Just my opinion, really. Brunette is Best. :)
You know, it's funny because the title 'Desolation of Smaug' actually sums up the show 'Sherlock' pretty well when you keep in mind that Benedict played Smaug.
No matter what anyone says but Sherlock and John are soulmates. There are not many things in this show that are obvious from the start but it is indeed very much obvious that Watson and Holmes each are the only person that keeps the other one safe and happy. They might not be destined for a happy Johnlock ending after all, but they definitely are made for each other.
The basis of their friendship is that they have an unbreakable bond, one that will never involve betrayal, one that shares risk for the benefit of the other. In the books, they share danger constantly. Regardless of how they get on each others' nerves, their friendship is unalterable.
What I think is that it’s bigger than the show. People have shipped John/Sherlock long before this series started and they will most probably forever will. Also, people are shipping characters that are only friends cannonically since a long time. It’s not just Sherlock Holmes and it’s not just this series at all. I think, as a reader, a viewer, or a fan, we should just enjoy our own views of what we understand behind the story. It’s the true miracle of storytelling. A story that can only instill the same interpretation to every one of it’s listeners is a bad or boring story. That said, I think that the era we are in, with social media and all, has something to do with the success of this “bromance”. I even think it has to do with the increasing success of the show. How many people watched it because they heard about it on twitter or tumblr? The show’s got 4 years to increase its fanbase almost effortlessly because of the social media spreading it everywhere.
i like the "bromance" idea on SHERLOCK because it shows that even though you're damaged IE; john watson dealing with war & Sherlock's anti-social issues and the fact that both are adrenaline/violence junkies, you can still find someone to connect with. And I love the irony that their closest relationship is with the same sex. People always idealize romantic love as your wife/husband/partner being the person you're closest to. Sometimes the person that you expose your true self and real heart to is your best friend.
I love Amanda and all as Mary but i'm still waiting for her to die, she just has to, or they are going completely against the book, and they have gone against the book in the past with loads of things but none were as big as this so it wasn't really much of a problem. The best way for her to go would be during this break to season 4 so its like the book where her death isn't specified, Watson refuses to talk about it, and he moves back to baker street. Nobody really knows how she dies and since Mark and Steve are like superfans of the book i hope they do something like this.
It would be heartless of John grieving without really grieving for Mary, because he was mourning properly for Sherlock even followed 'one year' rule before moving on to another relationship. Especially after making her pregnant AND giving hints about her CIA-assassin past. So either she will die in childbirth - and the kid won't survive - or someone from her past will resurface and kill both her and the child... one will make John devastated and probably destroy him... and the other will turn him into a heartless automaton hell-bent on burning the world. I hope there is a third way out :(
Vini Bhatt I hope she and the baby dies, not to be callous or anything, i'm just saying they can't make everything all lovey dovey, i hate when series do that and everyone knows the best series are the ones that aren't afraid to kill off prominent characters. And bringing Moriarty back doesn't help them either, i think he's amazing and i love his character but bringing him back is just a little bit silly really, they are just backtracking, and after watching an interview with Steven Moffat he said something which is now making me think this series is more of Steven and Marks fantasy of Sherlock instead of being a magnifcent adaptation i once thought it was, they are just altering to much now its all getting a bit ludicrous, first it was Irene Adler ( as much as i hated it, i let that one slide simply because every adaptation of Irene Adler makes her a love interest of Sherlock's), and now it's Moriarty and Mary, all the other changes they made weren't a problem they needed to be made and actually made the show better, but these bigger things are just ruining the series.
xJellyMx I agree with almost everything you said. Even though i love the series to death, I have started taking it with a pinch of salt. i hated Irene in this adaptation, she loved me the wrong way, I guess, but yeah. I hope that Mary and the baby die, but just not offscreen and never to be talked of again. Their death should have some repercussions on John and Sherlock's lives. And as far as Moffat's interview is concerned... well, fuck him.
Vini Bhatt It was the PBS masterpiece interview btw, just in case you want to check it out with Benedict, Sue, and Steve and there's one part when he's going on about how he loved Sherlock when he was growing up and reading about Irene he was hoping for more so he changed it up in the series, annoyed me so much learning it was just his adolescent horny fantasy that made them do what they did, i mean for heavens sake Sherlock never loved her in the book, he just admired and respected her for outwitting him, and to be completely honest i would've been fine; even happy with that whole relationship between them if they had chose a more worthy actress, no offence to Lara Pulver or anything but i found found it incredibly hard to watch her and her bony chest prance around like a slut, calling herself Irene Adler :/... But i agree with you to on the basis of Mary's death though, i guess it would be better to show her death and the effect it has- that would be a good change that they could make different from the book, unlike the rest of the silly ones they have already made.
xJellyMx I'm sooo with you on the Irene thing. I saw that interview and well, I guess i understood why Whovians hate him so much. I don't have a problem with them filming their personal Sherlock fanfic, but you know you can actually figure out which eps were written by Mark and which ones are by Moffat. Like the wedding episode was all Mark as Mary was sooo awesome in it - she was crisp and fast and not quite like the one in the book, but changed for better. But in the last episode was Moffat, and Mary was an ex-CIA-assassin-housewife-who-shipped-John-and-Sherlock in it. I wish Mark just would take over completely and write all the eps.
I always say that a platonic love is really the strongest kind of love, silly as it may sound. Sherlock and John certainly love each other, but I think it is the purest, unconditional, friendship kind of love. (And it's not that romance can't have the same (pure, unconditional, blah blah), but that I don't see the romantic dynamic between them). Even with the flirting and playing, that stuff happens with good friends. It's a silly, funny, and comfortable sort of thing. They're bosom buddies!
I love how she stutters so much on this line "they are looking for a husband- Wife! wife for sherloc- John!" and then is fine saying everything else....
I love that they are just friends. Its about time we see some deep bro love. Its like men cant have a very close relationship with another man without them being gay(nothing wrong with being gay tho). So I say bring on the bro love!
someone who agrees with me *sobs* I mean I like also johnlock but more in a platonic way. I can't honestly picture sherlock being sexual. He's totally an ace to me. They love each other, as friends, as brothers, maybe also something more but... I'm fine with how things are
musicfan1107 We don't think they've got romantic/sexual feelings for each other just because they're very close; it's because there are countless reasons and clues in and outside the show to suggest that.
When has there been a television about two gay males living together and not being stereotypically gay? When has that happened? never. so take your gay-bashing elsewhere.
I haven't gone through all of the comments, but I easily get the relationship. This is a relationship shared by some soldiers, police officers, fire fighters/EMS who spend half their waking life with a regular partner and who may go into harm's way; you learn to watch out for each other, and ultimately it is almost as close and intimate a relationship as a good marriage. And although you may change partners due to transfers or other administrative reasons, you ALWAYS remember your previous ones with fondness.
I ship Johnlock myself, but I think Amanda (and Mary) seem very nice. Amanda looks so sweet, and I really hope what she says about Mary will be true :)
Lol, I'm a JohnLock and a Jary fan, and I LOVE Mary so much that I'm desperately hoping that they don't kill her off like what happened in the books......I desperately want these three to share the screen together for a very very very long time. I LOVE these three! I love them!
one of the best written platonic relationships ever. so good, that they've merged and become known as one of the most famous duos ever. now that's good writing.
Benedict english vocabulary is so good...he used a word "titillation" to describe john and sherlock relationship and everybody knew the meaning of word titillation...if they doesnt knew the meaning pls search it on Google...
Two characters of the same sex wo are really close friends and have a relationship so deep will almost always be accused of being something more and sexualized. My best friend and I (both female) share a relationship nearly identical in every way to John and Sherlock's - We are soulmates, undeniably, but our relationship is entirely platonic. We are both bi, even, but still platonic. This is the reason I see John and Sherlock's relationship as entirely platonic, because I have the very same relationship in my own life. Growing up, we were bullied and teased for being lesbians nonstop on a daily basis and it was actually quite traumatic, which is why extremist Johnlockers infuriate me. Now, I can appreciate Johnlock, it's not that I'm against it, I'm guilty of enjoying it now and again but when it comes to the CANON show itself, I think they have something 100% platonic and very special and deep with each other, and making it forcibly romantic takes away from that. I wouldn't be mad if it did become canon, and I won't presume that it won't become canon (based off the fact that the series is APPARENTLY inspired by a film where Sherlock is gay, and loves John romantically, but remains one-sided), but I do seriously doubt that it will and I think their relationship as it is now is perfect. And people need to remember that Benedict and Martin are portraying these characters. They know these characters as they are in this series better than anyone, most certainly better than us. If they both insist that the relationship is platonic then they need to be taken seriously and not laughed at. You can ship it, but I think there is a level of sanity that needs to be kept in check and not berating the actors, who portray these characters you ship, for trying to clarify the nature of their relationship. That wouldn't be an acceptable thing to do if they (sherlock and john) were real people trying to defend THEMSELVES, or if it were your OC and your viewers/readers were refusing to listen to your words about your own character.
Wasn't this interview done before the January 1st debut of season 3? The actors have to keep the public off guard as to what's going to happen. Certainly, at least to me, Sherlock has not regressed to his season 1 self at all. Liar, liar pants on fire! No mas pantelones! teehee.
Have you guys ever heard of queerbaiting? There's so much in this show, more than in every other show I watched (no I didn't watch supernatural). That's why. There are so many innuendos. And I'm totally cool with this, because the WRITERS DID THAT ON PURPOSE FOR GOD'S SAKE. If they don't want to imply something, they don't write such sentences in the show. Simple as that. And I'm not the type who often "over-romanticise" friendship. I don't do that in Once Upon A Time, I don't do that in Harry Potter, or Vampire Diaries, or some other shows/movies. But look at those amount of queerbaiting they give us. .-.
+miss msh I don't want to criticise you and you can keep your opinion of course, I have nothing against the fact that you don't ship Johnlock as well as I'm expecting that people let me have my opinions too. But just to increase your consciousness and for me out of sheer curiosity: Did you watch The Abominable Bride? And if you did... what about your sentence "there are no hints or so people twist facts to fit their theories ".. There where so many (wouldn't say hints but) innuendos in that special episode, I wasn't even able to count them. Especially the one sentence from Moriarty: "why don't you two just elope with each other" and John: "actually.. would you mind?" Sherlock: "not at all". And that was in Sherlock's mind palace, so his mind came up with that. I won't say that John feels the same for Holmes, but Sherlock definitely has some stronger feelings, even if it's just in his subconscious. And just for the case, that you want to deny at least that conclusion: Authors write a story and sentences said by characters in a calculated way, they don't leave it to chance. They plan it. I'm not saying they want to make Johnlock happen, but at least they play with the thought it would be possible and they torture the fans with it, which is called queerbaiting. ;) Ps. No, I'm not a Teen and I don't even have Tumblr. Martin Freeman has an account there tho. And if you didn't know yet, Mark Gatiss is gay. So I wouldn't wonder about the amount of innuendos in this show, and the fact, that they are purposely.
Poor Amanda (no, I'm not being sarcastic). Apparently she was getting hate mail when it was announced she was cast so now she has to kindly let people know her character isn't a wedge between John and Sherlock.
I find Benedict's comment about the muscle memory being ingrained and that he found it easier to get back into being Sherlock this time at odds with his acting in the shaving scene in the beginning of Empty Hearse. He was very Kahn-ish in that scene. Jus sayen.
I've never seen Martin Freeman being so terrified while he says "I don't know" five times
It was great 🤣
Amanda: We're gonna introduce a hus-wife for Sher-for Watson
Even she thinks Sherlock needs a husband
Yes, that's probably the best part of this interview. xDD
Sherl definitely needs a husband. And there's only one guy who would fit in that place.. :(
Yup! And... Watson? Wha?
Mary is the second biggest shipper of Johnlock (Mrs. Hudson is the biggest)
They keep repeating platonic. Who knew denial could be so adorable.
Denial that Johnlock doesn't exist you mean?
But of course. It's as true as the day is long.
You know your ship is real when John AND Martin's wife ships it.
Their last few decades are going to be unpleasant enough for them.
firebeatsroses I'll have a crack at it:
There once was a man named Phil K
Who shouted against all things gay.
Ranting and raving.
The way he's behaving
Makes you wonder if he's secretly that way.
*bows to all*
Usually I hate it when people say "uh" when talking, but when Benedict does it I swoon because my headphones rumble a bit at the bass in his voice....
Ahahah! Oh word! I know!
😂 true
...I'm not alone 😅
AAAH Amanda's such a JOHNLOCK fan by ACTUALLY wanting to say "a husband for Sherlock"!!!! at 3:26 eheheeheheeee she's great
Amanda ships it so hard
Johnlockkk
"it's completely platonic, it's just platonic, of course it's platonic, 100% platonic"
Overdoing it a bit, guys.
and then he asks the interviewer his opinion. it's beautiful!
"I think it is a show about a detective, not a detective show." - Mark Gatiss
Sorry, but Sherlock actually IS a romance.
Katy Gramling mary's going to die. her death is canon.
+Anna Toor
Could you please write that or a similar text to Moffat and Gatiss. I liked how you wrote it and think you're totally right. Besides if they would take that step, it would be just brilliant.
Nomoredrama2000 You just made my eyes wet. Ahhh. loooove.
Anna Toor
This!!! I've been waiting for this comment thread like EXACTLY. I AGREE WITH THIS WITH MY ENTIRE EXISTENCE
They're love each other like true friends
Johnlock is my OTP, but their relationship doesn't necessarily have to be sexual for it to be special. Johnlock love IS cannon.
+AmaLeniter24 Preach!! :)
What does cannon mean? Please someone explain
Cannon refers to something that is actually part of the original story in TV shows, books, or movies and not just a fabrication of fan fiction.
oh ok got it, thanks
I think the same about Mary like you.. but in the end it's always Johnlock as the OTP for me. .__.
She almost said 'A husband for Sherlock'
Hmmmm
i died oml
Hahhaa
Amanda ships them so hard I love it!! :')
+sUmmerRain810 yess, she totally did that husband for sherlock thing on purpose!! (03:19)
I felt luke evwn Mary sort of shipped it even tho SHE was married to John XDDDD
Martin asks what the interviewer thinks... love him so much
Martin's answer: no idea let's turn this question round onto you Mr Interviewer, enlighten me.
Benedict's answer: POSH STUFF POSH STUFF did he say tit-something? POSH STUFF POSH STUFF
Yyyep.
some sort like titillation or sort. check on the dictionary
Titelation, an interesting word to add to my internal dictionary, thank you Benedict.
POSH POSH POSH
The day that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle comes back from the dead and says, "By the way, I totally wanted John and Sherlock to get together" is the day that Johnlock shippers die from shock.
I don't think he would ever, but I hope Mark Gatiss would at least. xD
I don't care if she had that scandal because she has huge debts, I don't see why she has to pay them working on the show.
lizbennetgenova
i'm absolutely sure there are several actresses more than capable of taking on the role of Mary. only difference is that ms. abbington was just at the right place at the right time. she's an actress herself and actually worked with martin freeman in other productions. so the producers/directors are assured of the chemistry between them.
that's what I said.. people justify it with their chemistry, while to me it's a nonsense.. faking chemistry on screen is what every actor does and chemistry out of screen isn't necessary (and in any case, Martin could have become good friend with another actress as he became a friend to Benedict).
EXACTLY
Amandas massive Freudian slip, "a husband for Sherlock"
we know she ships it hard..
I suppose there always has to be someone who lowers the tone!!
Christine Hudson
you got to admitt its funny. she must have been brainwashed by all the naughty fans.
this is from her twitter
amanda abbingtonVerifierat konto @CHIMPSINSOCKS
'comes between John and Sherlock' can mean ALL manner of things...
Martin has always a very angry face, he makes me laugh a lot.
love martin and Ben, they are simply perfect together
angry face??
we HEARD you say "a husband for sherlock", amanda😂😂

Amanda is also a shipper :D
Vini Bhatt With two such good looking men who can blame her? :)
iammadness True dat :)
Vini Bhatt It's funny that your comment has a Translate thing under it:)
iammadness Maybe it's coz RUclips has set my lang to Indian English. I'm in India
"And they were saying they were going to introduce a hus- uh, wife for Sherl- uh, Watson"
I think what she really wanted to say was they were going to introduce a husband for Sherlock. And I'm sure we all know who that husband would be.

LESTRADE
5:27 - "(Mary) sees a lot of herself in (Sherlock).."
This was the most heartbreaking scene of HLV when Sherlock explained that John had chosen Mary based on his subconscious attraction to dangerous situations and people.
I bet she did in purpose XDDD
I wanna like this but it's at 123 sooooo
"platonic, platonic, platonic, and platonic"
you aren't convincing anyone yet
Awesome! Thank you xx
KeiyaValecourt not bad idea...just not here, not in Sherlock..because it's so rare this kind of relationship onscreen between two men, this kind of friendship, which they think does not exist anymore, but it does, peoplle really can be true friends, really love each other more than theirselves, they can have their personal lives without ruining the friendship and yes, they can do anything, I mean enything for each other and for their friendship...this is just really inspiring and I don't think there is a place for some kind of romance in here...they are just perfect the way they are (gosh I talk too much)
Nino Buishvili I am perfectly with you :-D
I really enjoy reading Johnlock Fanfics and this stuff, it's pretty amazing how much creativity there's in this "fandom world" and there are people I would by books from, if they would write in "real-life" , if you understand what I want to say....
But for the "real" BBC films, it is perfect at it is. You described it well enough so that I don't have to ...
But concerning Keiya's comment: I would like it to if there would be a little more LGBT stuff on TV... but let's wait some time....
(sorry for the bad english)
+Nino Buishvili
See but I have a problem with that logic.
Why does their relationship have to be friendship-based only, why can't they have romantic&sexual feelings for each other too?
platonic relationship my ass.
XD
I love you. xD
+Kristin Klaas lmao XD
Their ass
I'm glad that the relationship between the characters has stayed platonic. I mean, I would not take Mark and Steven seriously as writers if they made it more than what the relationship is already. I don't want a kiss/makeout/sex thing, to me, that ruins the chemistry Sherlock and John have from the beginning until now. There is a friendship between two characters that show that they care deeply for one another. That's how it should stay. I ship Johnlock, but, I really don't want it to happen on the show.
+ᏰᏗşιℓ Someone said it. Came here to say this myself, almost verbatim. Thank you.
"titillation"- Oh, Benedict, utter genius with the right words in the right context ;)
Yes, indeed. As he ALWAYS does. Ah, this perfect, amazing man. Swoon....
I nearly choked when Amanda said "a Husba...aaaah a wife for Sherlo...aaaah for John" :'D she ships it, I swear!!!!
I cannot even put into words how much I love this show....
meanwhile Benedict and Martin are hugging and holding hands backstage just cuz.
wow I love how these good friends these days can be great bros,,, so close,,, bestest buddies
Here's one very clear fact: Gatiss and Moffat have admitted that they often lie when asked about what's happening in the show. Mark has said that they have to because otherwise they would spoil the plans for the show.
Favorite show! The chemistry is perfect and very entertaining!
I love how Mary wanted John and sherlock to be closer together 😍
Watson: "Listen to me, I am not gay!"
You have know something's really wrong even YOUR OWN WIFE does not believe that. :P
openskies11 It's shows he's a deeply insecure hetero intimidated by even the thought of the idea of gay people existing.
@@goldyd144 Of course Sherlock and John are "not gay," Sherlock has only no real interest in women, John said two times "I'm not gay," but he actually never said he's straight. And bisexuality really exist.
Wonderful interview! =)
So looking forward to season 3.
I love how they have to specify that it's platonic. lol. Sure, the show would be even more awesome if they were gay but I actually love that Sherlock is asexual. That's a very underrepresented sexuality in the media.
absolutely agree with you here.
" the show would be even more awesome if they were gay" ahahah that's so funny
cofcofcoftheysoloveeachother in a not planoticwaycofcof
Sherlock could still be Asexual if Johnlock does become canon; since he could be romantically attracted to John.
Fandom Chick
that's what I hope actually. I just can't picture Sherlock having sex with anyone LoL.
4:05 "desolation" says Bilbo Baggins ;)
I like how ben used "titillating" and "affair" to explain how "platonic" it is.
I love how she almost said "a husband for Sherlock" xD
This is like the first time ever where Martin Freeman didn't swear in an Interview!! I'm proud of him lol :D
Simply love this show. Love.
Ben is charming! ... I always wonder..... How long & how he does his hair every morning.......
I believe in the book Mary Morstan has blond hair, but I read it quite a while ago so I could be mistaken ;)
Who gives a flying fuck what her hair colour is.
+ELMtree2of2 Jesus, you don't have to be rude....
owlfairy86 Sorry I didn't reply, that makes a lot more sense. :)
Cupcake Kat Thank you for your response to ELMtree2of2's comment. It's simply a rude comment but I appreciate your reply. :)
You know, it's funny because the title 'Desolation of Smaug' actually sums up the show 'Sherlock' pretty well when you keep in mind that Benedict played Smaug.
Desolation of Sherlock
omg yes
Nina Tabbal And Bilbo's great and Unexpected Journey.
Omg, that makes so much sense! xD
Oh..Martin just so lovely guy... :3
Amanda is amazing! Absolutely charming! Martin is a lucky guy!
+Алёна Лем aaaaaaaaaaaand Amanda is a lucky girl!!
Martin and Benedict sure have a hell of a way of showing 'just friendship' on camera if that's what they're going for
I sincerely appreciate your efforts in your likes and comments on my posts thanks for your love and support ...
I wish Mark just would take over completely and write all the eps.
poor Marting trying so hard not so spoil a thing ;D
i just really love Amanda and also Mary, i didn't think i would cos she would get in the way but she is so nice and sweet its hard not to adore her.
I see your point, but... I don't know anybody, who flirts with their best friend(s) though...
@@klaviergavin9936 Me neither.
Flirting with just a totally platonic best friend? Yes they are such best buddies. 😄
@@klaviergavin9936 me neither
I love how she stutters so much on this line "they are looking for a husband- Wife! wife for sherloc- John!" and then is fine saying everything else....
wow 👀👀
I love that they are just friends. Its about time we see some deep bro love. Its like men cant have a very close relationship with another man without them being gay(nothing wrong with being gay tho). So I say bring on the bro love!
watch "Scrubs", that's bro love. Sherlock and John haven't bro love
someone who agrees with me *sobs*
I mean I like also johnlock but more in a platonic way. I can't honestly picture sherlock being sexual. He's totally an ace to me. They love each other, as friends, as brothers, maybe also something more but... I'm fine with how things are
Nina Tabbal
Totally agree. JD and Turk's love should be in the dictionary as the definition of ' bro love'! But Sherlock and John's nothing like that.
musicfan1107 We don't think they've got romantic/sexual feelings for each other just because they're very close; it's because there are countless reasons and clues in and outside the show to suggest that.
"She's allowed him to forget his grief and his...*desolation*" I see what you did there Martin :D
Benedict is the only reason I watch, that & the storyline of course.
Even Amanda is fangirling over Sherlock. No one can resist ;)
Why is Bilbo with Benedict?
you mean why is Bilbo with Smaug :D
;
KHAAAAAAAAAN! xD
Smaug and Bilbo
3:26 a hus- ah wife for sherlo- eh for watson...
hehehe johnlock
I can't believe I never heard that properly until you said it lol :)
I ship Johnlock myself, but I think Amanda (and Mary) seem very nice. Amanda looks so sweet, and I really hope what she says about Mary will be true :)
I can't wait for S3!
This interview brought to you by: #TJLC
Lol, I'm a JohnLock and a Jary fan, and I LOVE Mary so much that I'm desperately hoping that they don't kill her off like what happened in the books......I desperately want these three to share the screen together for a very very very long time. I LOVE these three! I love them!
RoseJustice4 um well
one of the best written platonic relationships ever. so good, that they've merged and become known as one of the most famous duos ever. now that's good writing.
Ok, this may mean nothing, but when Mary says that there is a new wife for John she stumbles and says husband for Sherlock.
Just two little hedgehogs and a dragon
Haha Amanda said 'a husband for Sherlock' first. Brilliant :D
3:27 "gonna introduce a husb- uh- wife"
even *she* thinks he's gay ;)
I think is is interesting that Martin said John has almost moved on and gone back to normal while Benedict said that he regressed..
Wasn't this interview done before the January 1st debut of season 3? The actors have to keep the public off guard as to what's going to happen. Certainly, at least to me, Sherlock has not regressed to his season 1 self at all. Liar, liar pants on fire! No mas pantelones! teehee.
No I think Martin said John moved forward and Benedict said Sherlock regressed.
why is everyone thinking that they're gay? I think that they just love each other in a way that best friends do.
excatly
Watch a full TJLC explained video and say you still think that there aren't HUGE hints in the show
Have you guys ever heard of queerbaiting?
There's so much in this show, more than in every other show I watched (no I didn't watch supernatural).
That's why. There are so many innuendos.
And I'm totally cool with this, because the WRITERS DID THAT ON PURPOSE FOR GOD'S SAKE. If they don't want to imply something, they don't write such sentences in the show. Simple as that.
And I'm not the type who often "over-romanticise" friendship. I don't do that in Once Upon A Time, I don't do that in Harry Potter, or Vampire Diaries, or some other shows/movies. But look at those amount of queerbaiting they give us. .-.
+miss msh
I don't want to criticise you and you can keep your opinion of course, I have nothing against the fact that you don't ship Johnlock as well as I'm expecting that people let me have my opinions too.
I'm not saying they want to make Johnlock happen, but at least they play with the thought it would be possible and they torture the fans with it, which is called queerbaiting. ;)
Ps. No, I'm not a Teen and I don't even have Tumblr. Martin Freeman has an account there tho. And if you didn't know yet, Mark Gatiss is gay. So I wouldn't wonder about the amount of innuendos in this show, and the fact, that they are purposely.
Wrong question: Why is everyone thinking they are straight? I think that they just love each other in a way which for once isn't straight.
Best friends SHOULD be in love with each other, and in a completely platonic way.
So there.
BROMANCE
ah! So funny LOL
"Friendship relationship" and "Platonic affair"
New words to describe an otherwise indescribable " *something* ".
So many words. To prove what? They just love each other. And we hope in parallel universe in all possible ways 💋
3 ended up being awesome. Now we've to worry about tonight's one... I've an amazing feeling about it.
Freeman was terrified and I loved it 🤣
3:26 Lmfao, what were you going to say, Amanda? A hubby for our dear Sherl? XD
I love this damn show so much.
Poor Amanda (no, I'm not being sarcastic). Apparently she was getting hate mail when it was announced she was cast so now she has to kindly let people know her character isn't a wedge between John and Sherlock.
there's a lot of love in the Sherlock books
OH. MY. GOD. Didn't anyone notice that Amanda almost said "They're looking for a husband for Sherlock" at around 3:33?
Platonic. *sigh* :(
Phil K Idiots. *sigh*
+Phil K (Ignore ignore ignore)
its the best Sherlock ever!!
Martin is probably the only one who is asked "what do you think" and asks the interviewe back "what do YOU think?" Haha love him, little hedgehog
I find Benedict's comment about the muscle memory being ingrained and that he found it easier to get back into being Sherlock this time at odds with his acting in the shaving scene in the beginning of Empty Hearse. He was very Kahn-ish in that scene. Jus sayen.
Benedict Cumberbatch's face makes me way too happy.
LOL! Martin is so sassy! "I don't know. Why do you think?"
