Portuguese civ theme is not depressing. It's melancholic (can be interpreted as devotion to God). Portuguese has culture of melancholy, represented by Fado genre of music.
They used the same music in Diablo 2, which was a legitimate horror game. why they gave the Goths the creepy horror music I will never understand lol. Even funnier is if you look at the scroll, their second picture is just a zoomed in version of the main picture, which is of Henry the Lion who i'm pretty sure was not a Goth.
