I still remember quite accurately the first time i saw my sister playing this on the computer, wondering what is this new game that looks like Majesty..
So true! They really don't make them like they used to... I was in abit of a shock when I analysed the game's realness a few years ago 😅 This game really makes me forget the outside world whenever I dibe into it.
I remember afternoons in the spring of 2000 in Italy, when I was a 9-year-old kid in fourth grade. I recall going to school in the afternoon, talking all day about Dragon Ball and PlayStation. I still had Windows 3.1 at the time, so the most fun I had on PC was playing Commander Keen or Wolfenstein 3D. I couldn't wait for it to be 4 PM because I was going to my cousin's house to play a copy of AoE II. In reality, I barely touched the mouse, but I didn't care; history was my favorite subject at school and seeing all the things I studied for the first time on video was something I find hard to describe today. We continuously read the story excerpts in the game, I was completely captivated by the music (15:20 was my absolute favorite) and the characters, and boy, the aesthetics in general. 'The blood on La Hire's sword is almost dry!' I repeated those words until I was exhausted when we played in the courtyard with other kids. I miss my youth, but even more, I miss the lightheartedness and hope for the times to come that I had.
Wow man thank you gor sharing this... Since we're being this honest, I still to this day (I am 31 and discovered AoE2 when I was a kid) sometimes randomly say "La Hire wishes to kill something", or "Crusaders are attach our trade rooutes" or even "Wallace has come!!". I can still remember the shock of when Barbarossa drowned in that bloody river, the crazed look in Father Armand's eyes. When you mentioned the excitement of going to a game after a day of school you struck a chord... That feeling is actually one of things that got me into doing this channel. I'm sure we are looking through rose tinted glasses but the lightheartedness of childhood is something I believe many of us miss... I certainly do.
love stumbling on comments like this. the human condition, beautifully distilled. made me think about my own memories watching intently as my older brother played the campaign, and how much i miss them. thanks for sharing
I think I was 9 when my dad introduced me to this game, and I became so obsessed with it that my parents had to limit me to playing it only when it rained. Whenever it began to rain, I would excitedly burst into the room wherever my dad was and proclaim that it was time to play Age of Empires. Even though I have never won against him, I still love every second of playing it with him.
I see comments like this “I miss this”, “I miss my childhood”. Every month me and my brother get together and play the CD old version. I have a group of colleagues that play AOE2 now and again. Find someone to play it or play it again solo. Yes you might have more responsibilities but you’re never too old to enjoy the things you loved in your childhood. I’m spending £45 to repair my broke Xbox 360 just to play Viva Piñata. Do what makes you happy ❤
Unfortunately it is not always that simple... so many people have too many responsibilities that they simply do not have time to spare in a day and the best they can do is to put on a RUclips video in the background whilst they do something else important... Sometimes we must forsake what makes us happy in place of what is meaningful... if we are blessed we find happiness in what we find meaningful.
Haha cool, I love the idea of showing ingame footage and this little monastery in the woods is so peaceful! The atmosphere in this game is simply sublime! 💜
I always imagined that 30:37 was the theme tune for the Aztecs, Mayans and Montezuma campaign. It was the first track on the Conquerors CD and it was the first thing you heard in all the (brilliantly voice acted) campaigns. Vinlandsaga, Noryang and Kyoto being my favourites. I think the campaigns were magical in the original game, especially with the epic spoken introductions they had.
Yes true... even though there is a lot of nostalgia we all have with this game, there is a good reason why it is still going very strong twenty plus years after its release... truly a great game!
I remember the time when I sat on my father's lap watching him play the Orleans campange. Now 24 Years later hes gone and i miss those Times I had no Worries, i was just happy. Man i miss my childhood and him of course Good Luck my fellow Empire Players

Gosh, I play Age of Empires 2 since im 5 years old. This video doesn't makes me feel nostalgic, sad or bad, it just gives me a great time of remembering those good times I had playing this game with my pals or my mother.

Crazy how we've been primed to know, instinctively, which age (dark, feudal, castle and imperial) corresponds to which song. It's like a musical timer for when you should age up.
It is so cool that we have a bit of an Age of empires renaissance these days with all the remasters, age of empires 4 and even an upcoming age of mythology remake. I'm glad my dad introduced me to these games all those years ago, I think I was 5 years old or something lol.
