  • The German Smear is a mortar wash technique. Instead of paint, you smear mortar mixed with cement over the brick to white it out. Unlike paint or lime, mortar does not penetrate the brick but instead covers it and creates texture.

What kind of mortar did you use?

Adding music to a video that's giving oral explanations makes it too difficult to hear/understand what's being said. Love the technique & outcome of this. Is there a way to add color to it so you have options other than white? TY.

I've only done this in white or gray. You can always experiment with whatever color you'd like to try but I'm not keen on the best method to do so. I'd imagine mixing in some paint, but who knows what the best way is? lol

What type of mortar did you use please? Where do I get the large pastry bag?

Although I've even heard of people using thinset, I believe a cement-based mortar is best like the Veneer Stone Mortar from Quikrete or something similar. I wish I could recall the brand I used on this fireplace, but the homeowner already knew what she wanted and bought it, if I can find out from her the brand I'll reply here with it. And you can find those pastry bags most places bakery supplies are sold, but they may have them at your local Ace Hardware. Hope this was helpful and thanks for being patient with me, very busy these days. All the best.
