Thanks for the video. I have the 24-70 and 70-200 in 2.8 but I don’t even bring them anymore. My favorite lens is my 85MM 1.8 and then I pair that up with my 135MM 2.0. I lose the ability to zoom but like not worrying about the zoom and like the added aperture. I shoot at 2.0 for all my basketball photos. I bring the 50MM 1.4 and a 200MM 2.0 as well but only use those now and then.

I shoot with the same two lenses and trade off throughout the game. I really like the look of the wider shots under the basket like you mentioned, but I find I end up submitting a few more 70-200 than 24-70 to the newspaper because close and tight sell the story better for most editors.
Great video. Still have to shoot basketball :D Have done a lot handball indoor. Use 6D1 and 7D2 with 24-105 MK2 and 70-200 f/2.8. With my 300 mm f4 on the 6D and get great closeups. I have the 17-40 mm f4 and 50 mm f/1.8 STM lens too.
Rob, I now only carry 3 lens when going to my basketball games. I have the 70-200mm 2.8 for all of my general shots and the 35mm 1.4 for when I am right under the basket. The 35mm L lens is absolutely awesome and it gives me wide enough angle as you mentioned. Also, I do take my 400mm so I can go up in the stands and get some interesting shots looking down n the action.
Ah yeah I could imagine some good angles on a 400mm from high up Tom. I'll try that at some point
When I was a Canon user, my favorite lens was the 70-200 f2.8. In late 2019 I changed to Fuji (1.5 crop factor). In well lit arenas I use the 50-140 f2.8, but here in Hungary we have a lot of dark gyms, so there I use the 90 f2 and 50 f1. For wide angle shots my favorites are the 23 f2 and 16 f1.4, but I prefer the telephoto shots. For some extra portaits I use the 100-400, because the Fuji 200 f2 is too expensive comapred to how much I get from my customers.

i use mainly the 70-200 2.8 and for the 10% of the photos i use the 24-70 2.8 (sony shooter), i'm working on getting a prime lens because here the halls are pretty dark and also on 2.8 i'm forced to go high with ISO... and also trying to take more with the 24-70 and include the 16-35... but the venues are also little (in Switzerland) and i've rarely the place to go on hte baseline unter the basket... :) thx for your contents!!! regards

Great video. I use my Sony a77ii and the Sony SSM 70-200 mm F2.8 G, but lately, I have been using my Sony 6300 with the Tamron 28-75 mm F2.8 Di II RXD for awesome shots near the goal and baseline.
I have the sony a77ii also. What settings do you find give you the best results for shooting basketball and indoor sports.
Just rewatched this as I’m shooting my first match on Sunday. I had the 70-200 f/2.8 and do have the 17-40 f/4. I have though just added a Tamron 35-150 f/2.8 to my kit bag - more a budget choice with regard the make. Nice tip about the IS, I’ll go knock that off now before I forget 👍
I’m lucky to have two bodies so I can use both lenses with changing over, but I may swap the bodies over at the end of the second and see which gives the best results with which lens.

Nice comparison. How do you feel about the new 100-500 for sports? I didn't see any reviews in that genre yet but ISO should make it on the R5/6...
I shoot basketball with a Sigma 28-70 f2.8 on my Panasonic S5. I've been thinking (and overthinking) about getting a 70-200 but don't know if I should buy the F4 version or expend more of what I have and go for the F2.8 (which is $800 more expensive). Seeing this video made me realize I have been shooting decent photos so far, and maybe I should go for the F4 version if the upcoming Sigma f2.8 version of the 70-200mm lens is too expensive. I use the same lenses for basketball 70-200, 50, 24-70. Also mainly use 24-70 from the baseline. Advice for position in high school gym. Pick the end opposite main entry and away from concessions, and left side of the basket. Also watch for scoring table with lighted advertisement signs, they will blow out your pictures.
what do you mean by blowout?
@@hamudialtom624 The gym I shoot in has a lighted advertisement at the scoring table. The lighted sign is way brighter than the light on the players. If I take a correctly exposed picture of the player an the lighted advertisement in the background the sign will be way over exposed it will 3’x8’ white blob in my photo. Shooting volleyball the scoring table is in the middle right at the net so I have to move around to find an angle that it’s not in my photos
I would use the 85mm 1.8 but I’ve been using the sigma 300 2.8 a lot recently . I will use it on the baseline and I will go up in the stands as well
I have been shooting basketball for the past 15 years and I would consider myself to be penny conscious. I'm also a Canon shooter that tends to gravitate to the 135mm f2.0 ; 24mm f1.4 and surprisingly the very inexpensive 40mm f2.8 in well lit gyms. The pancake lens is hit and miss but I have occasionally captured a moment to two with it. I also occasionally use the 200mm f2.8 prime and at one point in time I used the 85mm f1.8. I would be happy to share samples with others. Keep up the great work Rob!

@@RobSambles I'm wondering if you plan to tackle a segment on Black and white sports photography? Not as a correction to low res captures but as a primary art form. I have just framed two images shot in black and white for my office and they are quite appealing. Some of the most iconic sports images are monochrome. Food for thought?
@@paulhendren5603 Funnily enough I filmed a video about editing black and white today. Something that focuses more on the art form of B+W can definitely be a future video
For a more cheaper option, I usually use a canon 24-105 F4 ($300 used), and a 70-210 F4 ($450 new). The 24-105 really takes nice shoot when there right in front of you. It can get wide enough to get the whole court in frame and tight enough to get just the player. The 70-210 is a solid lens and has the perfect amount of reach for basketball.
I know this video is older. I just got into shooting basketball. Since my kids are in HS now and my son is in the band and they are at the games sometimes. So I use it as an excuse to get out and use my gear. I have my R7 and I use my RF 24-105 f4L and Tamron 70-200 2.8 2.8 G2. I tried sing my RF 14-35 f4L but even on crop for me that felt a bit short. I also just purchased an R6 as well so curious to see how its like shooting the games with FF vs crop body
I have a 70-200mm 2.8 IS version 1, but I use my 24-70mm 2.8 II 99% of the time on my 1Dx. I sit between the key and 3 point line for most of the games (high school, 2-5 games per week right now). Most of my keeper shots are between 45mm and 70mm. My second body is a 6D, but I'm not adept enough to use the 6D with the 70-200mm and switch to the 1Dx with 24-70mm when the action gets closer.
Good job Rob. Before the pandemic when we had basketball, I used my 70-200 f 2.8 usually on my 5D3. Some times I would play with the nifty 50, but felt restricted with it and the 85 seemed too big up close. We have poor lighting and I could never go higher than a f2.8. My 7D2 did not get it done in low light. I recently got the R6 with 24-105 f4 kit lens. Just for fun I will give that a try to see how it goes in our poorly lit gyms. Thanks
I reckon with the R6 you'll be fine at f4. The high iso performance on that thing is crazy
I'd love to hear what kind of results you get with the r6 and the 24-105 f4. I am considering picking that combo up for shooting my kids basketball games, but I am wondering if I would be better off saving for one of the f2.8 options. Would rather keep the extra dollars though if possible since I am an amateur.
@@RealN8G I got that R6 kit because it was the only way to get the R6 when I was shopping. My original plan was to get the R6 body with the RF 35f1.8 to try on indoor basketball. Or even the RF nifty fifty. We still dont have basketball here and they may never have it. If we do, I will let you know how the f4 works out.
@@RealN8G It really depends on the lighting on the gym you'll be shooting in primarily and if you can get away with f4
Hello! I’m a beginner and i’m trying to find a nice lens to begin and I don’t have a big budget. I saw 2 lens that were pretty interesting one was a 45-150mm and the other was a 25mm another was a 14-42mm but I don’t really know wich is better !
Are these lens mostly if you on the court floor? Would any of these be good if you are in the stands? Or which lens without breaking the bank?

I think the 16-35/17-40 and 70-200 is a solid combo. I think that makes it more of a clear choice as to what lens to use. Using a 24-70/24-105 you don’t really know when you should change.
Thanks for this info - im not a photographer - just a grandfather who'd like to capture some great photos from grandson's BB team - so I dont know much about all of this stuff. I have a canon T3i with standard 18-55 F/4:5.6 lens - and photos are just kind of grainy when I shoot in sports mode, or shutter priority (TV) . In shutter priority Ive played around with different ISOs and shutter speeds - and regardless of settings - photos tend to be a bit grainy, especially if you crop. I rented the 70-200 F2.8 lens, and that didnt seem to help much. So - Im guessing I need to get a better camera ? Im curious about what cameras folks on this thread use. thanks in advance.

So I have a crop sensor, pop a 55-250 x 1.6 you’ll get a 400 mm with f/5 or 6 hypothetically. Just bought the 70-200 and the need for a 2x TC is nonexistent if I would get the same results

I'd go about f2.8 for basketball and then fast shutter maybe 1/1250 if you have loads of light

would love to own the 70-200 but currently my go-to lens is the 85mm 1.8. AF is crazy fast. However tends to be too tight on a crop cam
85mm in a crop might be a bit tight yes. You might find a nifty 50 useful

@@dchodeva i have the 50mm f1.4 USM and the 50mm f1.8 STM as well. And i use a crop sensor body, 80D for basketball and I can say the AF on the 50 1.4 is much faster than my 50 1.8. .but now im planning to upgrade to R8, and im still confused what lens would be better for the R8 for basketball, and sad to say i'm just an amateur who gets 36$ per game only with an output of approximately 200 shots per game.

Thank you. The IS doesn't work effectively shooting action at fast shutter speeds. If anything it can be detrimental to your focusing
On my R6 I use the 17-40-f4 and the 70-200 2.8. On the 7dMK2 I use the Sigma 50-100 f1.8. Also carry a 50 1.8, 85 1.8 and a Tamron 28-75 2.8. Sometimes I take the Sigma 120-300 2.8 for a few shots, but it is a heavy beast. THe 120-300 is great for wrestling.

wondering what the drawbacks are of not shooting with IS on for bball games...? i heard in the video you shoot with it off.
No draw backs of not using it. At fast shutter speeds like you use for sports it doesn't have time operate so it's not effective
Use 24-70 and 70-200. To be honest I could even leave the 70-200 home because once the ball is in my end of the court I've switched to the 24 - 70. I take a 10-20 Sigma for fun shots under the basket
Why do you turn off IS? Are you using a monopod? I was looking at the canon 24-70 mm but was nervous because it didn’t have IS.
At fast shutter speeds like 1/1000 IS is ineffective
