- How many remember Pink Dolphin, you know the very colorful very cartoonish very pink brand that smashed into the streetwear industry in the mid 2000s?
They were amongst the larger streetwear brands around 2013ish with a flagship store on Fairfax and their pices being seen on high profile rappers.
But for some reason, they fell off and are no longer really a thing today. Wondering why that is? Well let's find out. This is the Rise and Fall of Pink Dolphin.
Pink Dolphin started in 2008 in The Bay Area, the idea was dreamed up by Young L & Lil B of rap group the pack.
Fun Fact, Pink Dolphin was actually supposed to be the name of their rock band which never came to be. Word has it, it was Lil B that even came up with the name.
Young L would eventually bring on Cena Barhaghi as creative director to help on the art and business side.
The brands first official release consisted of 4 colorways of the original Promo Tee.
Thanks to the notority of Young L, (mind you the pack still had a bit of popularity at the time) and internet hype stemming from the original photoshoot , the tees dropped online as a “Promo Release”.
They started out with a super small run of 50 of each shirt (200 shirts total), and marketed the pieces as "Limited".

Pink dolphin is 🔥🔥, it wasnt out there like that but I noticed when it was strictly a online brand, it held the brand but when they started putting it in urban stores it got watered down cuz it appealed to a certain demographic at first

@@eb9095 unfortunately it's done my friend. Luckily I was able to cop some stuff off their site a week before they shut it down. Pink dolphin is officially done. It's sad cause their brand use to be one of the hottest coming up. I never thought I would see them die so fast.

Cena (the owner) needs to bring back more of the og designs and stop focusing on nfts. The quality of the latest drops have been very mid consisting of only hoodies shirts and hats compared to back when they use to drop jackets, denim, cut and sew items etc. I really miss what this brand used to be
Pink dolphin hasn’t been the same after 2014 but I still wear it. I used to go to there pop ups in Fairfax they used to host before there pink dolphin store shut down during COVID.

Young L sold his part of the company to cena and wasn’t really involved after that. When young L was the ceo was their better years. When they started selling in zumies as their “zumies only collections” was the start of the downfall of PD and didn’t really stick to their roots and what gained them popularity through the years by keeping everything limited.

I definitely remember Pink Dolphin i had every drop from 2011 to 2014 good times but their falloff was not surprising a lot of the people that supported it pretty much grew out of it like myself we in our late 20's early 30's now not mention the quality fell off as well.
Add in the fact street wear itself just fell off as well people want to be in designer nowadays.

Streetwear and big graphics is a just a phase which never lasts. Especially in fashion now, the look is more subtle and non vibrant colors. Take brands like 8&9 , reason, etc etc.
Still got my OG white snapback, black and red leather promo hat, and purple acid wash tye dye from the original drops 🙏🏻 I’ll always love the brand and idea behind, I flew out to SF to visit the height store personally. Recent drops though I agree have kinda lost the hype of the old days, shit was selling out so fast you had to have your card out and ready to at 9pm lol
It’s crazy to me that they are no longer a brand. They sold soo many fire items throughout the 11-12 years they was active. I still have stuff from the early years brand new unworn some of the stuff that was extremely limited to around 50-100 pieces only. Tie dye hoodies Ian Connor collab the safari drop etc. I remember I sold 52 of their best hats in a bundle for $1500 and they was all their limited hats that aren’t around anymore. So many great memories involving this brand. 😢❤

They got greedy! They raised prices, t-shirts were paper thin, they got rid of Dolphins points. Mystery boxes were loaded with crap.

What happened is Young L should made cena sign contracts for hire. Once pink dolphin got big cena came in and took the brand and after that it’s never been the same. It fell all the way off.
Fun fact in 8th grade I missed basketball practice one day cause I didn’t want too get my pink dolphin shirt dirty and coach got mad n kicked me off the team. Looking back at it now that shit is funny 😂😂. Rest In Peace the brand tho

i've never heard of this brand before but the designs still look pretty cool. I wonder if most streetwear brand's are destined to fall off at one point. i wonder what the reason behind that is and how to avoid it...as i'm working on my brand at the moment
From what we have seen chasing hype is the best way to burn out fast. Best way seems to build a loyal base the slow way and stay away from trends.
