      Imagine not using academic language correctly, the psychiatrist and professor Chester M. Pierce in 1970 to describe insults and dismissals which he regularly witnessed non-black Americans inflicting on African Americans and was used in the model 'Pyramid of Violence', to describe growing deep, racial prejudices about PoC and affecting minorities in small ways through your actions. But I'm sure you believe The Great Replacement crap that Sargon told you. I'm sure. This is what happens when we let reactionary white guys try to sound academic. Academic language becomes utter shit when it comes from you. You literally just want to be the guy who is like 'nope. I have no responsibility, I'm perfect.' @@adambaker4590 I definitely view microaggressions as less of a violent act, and more persistent and just.. annoying? I was born and raised in the US, perfectly native speaker, barely speak any other language (lol fml), yet I frequently get these weird, racial comments about my race/home country/origins. I get "wow your english is so good!" or "what is it like back in your country?" or "wow I've heard great things about you foreign women" or "why do your people eat dogs" from strangers CONSTANTLY. Its not harmful, for sure, almost like a friendly, well-intentioned racism-lite, but its definitely.. just.. fucking annoying after a while. And I do consider myself a patient person, so I find myself repeatedly gently explaining to strangers that I'm American through and through. I think the term microaggressions is a bit overboard, but I do agree with the sentiment behind it. It just can get overwhelming at times and I can understand why some ppl would want to rant/vent about it. I hope that gives some perspective!

      Hi there. Im not used to commenting on stuff like this but your comment struck a chord and id like to explain my view on microagressions if youre willing to listen.
      I'm Icelandic. We are a small nation of around 300.000 people with a huge majority of those people being white. Less than a percent are black so almost everything the average person knows about black people comes from tv and the internet because its so rare to be able to make a black friend or have a black co-worker.
      I explain this because my boyfriend is an American who moved here 3 years ago to study our language. Icelandic is one of the most difficult languages to learnbut hes passionate about it and he speaks it fluently.
      The problem with being such a minority here is that a lot of people assume he doesnt know the language. Almost every time he meets someone new he has to stop them from switching to english and tell them to speak Icelandic to him. They dont try to speak english first because they are racist, they do it because they assume they know what type of person he is. Thats what a mcroagression is. Its having to over and over deal with assumptions about your background or culture. Its not the peoples fault but its also something they should be made aware of. Microagressions is actually not a great word because usually theres nothing agressive about it. Its just passively accepting the world view you have instead of being self critical.
      My point is that using microagression unironically in 2019 isnt always bad. I hope you can see my point

    • @TobyMUFC
      @TobyMUFC 5 лет назад +86

      lucaridudelvX I assume you mean “they don’t speak Icelandic to him first “ in the middle of your comment. If your boyfriend is black which I feel like you’re alluding to it’s comical how you call people racist for speaking English to a black man they’d probably think is a tourist. That’s like a white man going to an African country and expecting them to know he speaks their language. Stop calling things racist because it’s convenient , it’s just simply not racism.

      It's a useful tool to explain how people can be petty. It's like if your girlfriend asks you to put the toilet seat down and you intentionally leave it up to be a petty bitch. I think the term microaggression fits pretty well with that kind of action.

      If you'd genuinely like to know the reason, I am Asian and I may be able to provide some perspective. The punchline of the joke relates to how difficult it is to use chopsticks, but for Asians who have been brought up with them it isn't hard at all. A joke like that can be interpreted as kind of exclusionary, which in turn can make it seem as though it was made at the expense of Asians, especially since from the looks of it they offered a Vietnamese burger and did not associate it with any actual Viets, simply choosing instead to poke fun at an Asian eating utensil in a way that most Viets probably wouldn't relate to, which may leave a bitter taste for some Asians. That's really stretching though, it's pretty obvious Burger King meant no harm from it, I think the woman was just overreacting a little, but there you go. That's the reason.

I am in no way defending them but, the way the internet is, it’s going to be impossible to stop these people unless you metaphorically cut the heads off the snakes.
