I was leaving a DV situation in grad school and fell asleep in class numerous times. The professor, normally very cold, pulled me aside after class and asked what was going on. I said I was too scared to fall asleep at home. We developed a system where she’d tap me lightly if she noticed I was falling asleep, so I wasn’t embarrassed. I think of her often. I wish the judge had been more like her.

As a person who has been to a courtroom(for HS credits), and watched. I can tell you, most of them are boring. Nothing like you see on TV or clips from trials that go on for weeks. Instead they usually bring the person in, say what they are there for, lawyer says they are pleading guilty, and judge sets a court date for sentencing, rinse repeat. Absolutely no objections statements, nothing. So I sat there for my 3 hours and left, very tired... If these kids were on a school trip, tired, fatigued, I probably would of done the same in her shoes.

"Bailiff, that child is evidently exhausted, can you escort her & a chaperone to my chambers so she can take a nap on the sofa or recliner there, while I continue the discussion with the rest of the field-trip group." That's maybe a better way to go, if there's a 'next time'. At least give the kid the benefit of the doubt, that falling asleep might not be a sign of disrespect.. but maybe a sign of sleepiness!

It is a constant struggle. People with power have a bad habit of seeking more power, and the most insidious are those that think they are are righteous.
But with our founding statements including quotes like "Those who would sacrifice freedom for security deserve neither", well, we can still get pretty feisty when it comes to pushing back on government overreach. Though sometimes it takes a few years of court fights to sort out.

    • @atillathehung2000
      @atillathehung2000 24 дня назад

If you aren’t here I don’t think you know the half of it. You have governments getting sued and then being the judge and jury presiding over their own case. The ATF is an abomination of an authoritarian organization who shouldn’t exist. The two parties that make up our entire government are more interested in maintaining power than actually doing their job and serving the public like they’re supposed to. Freedom has become something that we define within specific boundaries, but if you start getting too free then the corporations who support the US economy and fund the government have no control to keep you working for cheap so they need to reign you back in. I think a good example of this is Ruby Ridge. Nonviolent family who was armed and just wanted to be left alone ended up having a couple of them murdered by police and the FBI supported the unconstitutional siege on their property. We are more free in some ways, but absolutely enslaved and controlled in others.

When I was in high school I began getting very sleepy all the time and legitimately tried my best but I just couldn't stay awake. I was nodding off or sleeping through most of my classes for about 3 days. My English teacher snapped on me in front of the entire class. I felt horrible. Told me I needed to stop "whatever you're up doing all night and get some rest."
One day I realized something was wrong and drove myself from the school to the emergency room. I just left. Didn't tell my teachers or anything. The hospital was close. They called my mom and she called the school after.
I had a blood sugar of almost 900 and was in keto-acidosis. I was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic that day.
Nobody should ever, ever shame a child for being sleepy. I don't care when or where they're sleeping. Talk with them in private if you think it's just disrespect and/or bad decisions. There are so many possible reasons. That judge should be ashamed and should face some sort of penalty. What that is, I do not know. But I believe an inquiry at the very least is in order due to his poor judgement as a JUDGE.

Not that the girl did anything wrong in this situation, but this is exactly the reason why punishment doesn’t work and positive reinforcement does. Punishment teaches kids that bad behavior that isn’t seen doesn’t get punished, so they’re just taught to hide it better and everyone time they get away with something it reinforces that. Positive reinforcement works because positive behavior has to be seen to be rewarded. If they exhibit bad behavior that doesn’t get seen there’s no benefit to it.

Some of the mannerisms that come naturally to me are frequently classified as “suspicious” or evidence that someone is trying to hide something. I fidget, I struggle with eye contact, I can’t sit still, I sometimes emote strangely and say things that can sound strange to people who don’t know me and how my mind works. I can’t agree more. You can absolutely make an educated guess as to whether someone is lying, but there is NO way to know that you’re right and there’s no way to know if you’re wrong.
Personally, my energy when it comes to cops is this, in case anyone else would like to adopt it:
      - I’m white and should use the privilege I am granted by this fact, to waste the HELL out of their time. Make them wait on the warrant, make them feel all disrespected, I don’t care. Spend all their time and money because then they can’t spend that time hurting someone else or being discriminatory towards someone else.
      - explicitly state to a cop, security guard, etc, some indication of mental health problems. Be it “I’m having an anxiety attack” or “I am diagnosed x” this puts it on record if they have a body cam or if there are witnesses, that you informed the officer of your condition so they should shift their approach. (Key word being “should”).
      - any communication other than asking for a female cop (I’m a woman), telling them you’ll wait on a warrant, and informing them of your condition is unnecessary. (Also providing ID if it is the law in your state). Words past that should be “AM I BEING DETAINED?” and/or, “LAWYER!” Regardless of your ability to afford one. Save your words for an appointed attorney, that’s better than incriminating yourself unintentionally or by miscommunication.
Also bonus: ALWAYS take the breathalyzer if you haven’t been drinking, if you have, maybeeee don’t drive.

I've had a teacher do that to me too. Near the end of the school year he kept taking us on short notice field trips. My mom was jobless and on welfare. Mind you, where I live you can get stuff like field trips for school covered by the state, but you have to place the request several weeks in advance for it to go through in time, which he made impossible by deciding on Monday we were going somewhere on Wednesday. Meaning my mom would have to pre-pay the money. She would be reimbursed eventually, but for the moment, it would be cutting into our already tight grocery budget. So eventually, after multiple of these trips, she had enough and refused to pay, because it was piling up, the reimbursements were taking their sweet time coming in, and we needed groceries. I was even fine staying with another class for the day but he insisted I had to come, so he paid for my bus ticket and museum entry. How nice, right? But then he would not stop hounding me about getting that money back, no matter how often I told him we literally didn't HAVE it. This was about like 8$ and teachers make quite good money where I live. He got in cahoots with my homeroom teacher on the last day to hold my report card hostage and not allow me to leave until my mom came to school with the money. He called her multiple times while I told him to stop because she was in a job interview but I guess he thought I was just making excuses. I eventually told him I didn't care about not getting my report card, I was leaving. He tried to stop me but there wasn't much he could do without crossing the line of legality. My mom got the job and our situation finally improved but she never did give him that money back lol

For his knee-jerk reaction to be 'I'ma show this punk who's boss', it's wholly unsavory. This incident should be enough to prevent him from presiding over any cases involving minors.

I really felt for that girl. I had a high-school teacher who would make snide remarks about me and another student nodding off in class and how "we should go to bed earlier instead of playing video games". The other student was working two jobs, and I was up most nights due to pain from medical issues. It really annoyed me because despite everything going on, we both had A's, so he obviously wasn't concerned about our education.
I'm a teacher now, and yes, while I will talk with a student I see constantly dozing off, I won't put them on blast. Especially since whenever a student has been disrespectful, they don't do it by sleeping. Sleeping in class 9.5/10 times turns out to be an outside issue like insomnia, new baby, bad work schedule, etc. Even then, I've NEVER felt the urge to embarrass a student. If I need to lecture them, I do it privately.

Unless they are snoring or "prepared" to fall asleep (think bringing a pillow to class), then they aren't causing a disturbance and should be ignored. If a kid is falling asleep despite being surrounded by other kids and with a teacher talking to them, *they probably REALLY needed to sleep,* and the next course of action would be talking to them after class, *not* to punish them, but to understand *why* they fell asleep and how to prevent it in the future. So many people in it think everything is black and white, wrong or right, so when anything grey comes along, they don't know what to do, and they make rash decisions. Sometimes their delusions wreck lives, as almost happened with the judge. If he decided to send the tired kid to juvie, that could've drastically messed her up in ways she may not have recovered from.
Also, I'm not at all surprised the judge was trying to emulate "Scared Straight". Police don't know the difference between an acorn and a gunshot but we are expecting them to know the difference between an individuals reason for wearing a mask...

I will never understand why people think it's disrespectful when someone yawns or even falls asleep in class or at work. How is being physically tired disrespectful? It has nothing to do with you or your boring ass lecture

The judge went on a powertrip... "was I really gonna do that, probably, not, *could I have? Probably so"...* excuse me??! Check yourself, you're a judge and you are on a powertrip... you probably could? Man, you should be facing the other side of the bar yourself...

18:19 I dont think that people wearing masks to commit crimes arent worried about committing another crime by wearing a mask lol.

It's like that law in New Jersey that says you can't wear a bulletproof vest in the commission of a crime. They're already committing the crime, banning an action or clothing while you're doing so isn't going to scare anyone

21:27 Please remember that the Paralympic games are part of the Olympics. The games are not yet over. I'd love to see more acceptance and support of the paralympic competitions, especially as we are discussing how technology impacts both Olympic and paralympic athletes with advantages and disadvantages. If we can acknowledge the importance of technology and restrictions for both types of athletes, we should also celebrate and honor them equally. From a disability community member, I appreciate your content and all you do!

I used to be a APA & often practiced in front of Judge King. None of the us regular attorneys were surprised by his actions. He’s has several run ins with public and attorneys.
Judges are testy about the public falling asleep or inappropriately dressed in court. This is not the 1st nor will be the last time this happens.
Judge King has been removed from his docket, but it’s unlikely he’ll be removed from the bench. A complaint would need to be filed with appropriate agency. What’s more likely to happen he will be temporarily suspended

So he has a history of these attitudes. Not surprised. He needs to be fired.

The Matthew Perry news showed me there's a oddly large amount of people who think drug dealers shouldn't be held responsible for selling drugs to someone that unfortunately OD's.....
For that judge story, if that was my kid I'd definitely pull out the petty card and file every complaint i could against him. Especially if my kid had a sleeping disorder that caused them to fall asleep easily. And then he's has the audacity to not not apologize but instead over a mentor ship?

Lost my brother to an overdose. It was hard seeing the guy who sold to him. He got his karma tho and he’s finally in jail for a very very long time.

A stinging reminder that if you're politically, socially, or financially insignificant to those who run things, you're not important enough for anyone to care.

I can definitely tell you from past experience that some of those people who don't want to condemn the drug dealer, are people who also get their drugs from said dealer. And so they really just don't want their supply of drugs messed with. It's stupid to someone not on drugs but I've come across it many times.

Yeah since he was a celebrity his case got more urgency and media around it. But at the end of the day as a celebrity I don’t blame him because he was surrounded by enablers.

I got so angry at that judge story. I'm so tired of this "Tough Love" attitude so many of the black elders have towards the black youth. I've seen how damage it did to my friends around me.

I cannot emphasize this enough, Medicare is NOT everyone. My friend is diabetic. She’s still paying thousands of dollars on insulin and supplies and she works for a major retail pharmacy. Also, as someone who works for that same pharmacy, PBMs are the issue. They’re starting to release commercials because people are going to come for them. Pharmacies are failing because reimbursement is horrendous. They’re actively losing money on selling some of their drugs because the margins are that small. Can’t wait for the fallout with the PBM mafia.
