  • There is a definite feeling of relaxation after seven weeks in lockdown in Worthing, and I am sure this is reflected up and down the country. I take a stroll into town, keeping my distance, to see just how busy or not the town centre is, and which shops, if any, have started to open their doors again.
The new normal is here, certainly with regard to queuing, and I suppose we have got to get used to it.
Here is the walk in Worthing on more normal times: • Walks in England: Woul...

A very interesting & informative video. Great record for of what affect "lockdown" had on the town. It will be interesting to see how keen folk are on queuing in an orderly manner outside of shops - in the cold & rain - when Winter comes (assuming social distancing is with us for some time yet).

Wow love the fan..who managed to plug his book business ...
We've noticed the same on our walks...weeks ago nobody ..gradually a bit more traffic..
I'm glad I took photos of the town when it was empty...as it's a unique experience... if we did see people you know they are only on a daily walk as there is nothing else to do .
Inspired by you video I did daily snaps on my walk to capture the moment in history...and like you rediscovered my own town...and the history in walking distance of home.

Looks like more and more ppl are starting to come out now Richard and starting to get comfortable with going out. I live in a little village so have only been going out for my daily 1 hour exercise, just a little walk round my village so I haven't actually been to my local town since March 23rd. And I only rely on buses to get to that town and I guess I am scared to get on a bus now and to go to town because of this virus so yeah it will feel strange going back on a bus and going to town and going back to work. Sorry this is such a long comment I know your a very busy man Richard.

In the US we can go out for essentials and exercise. Most states here are opening back up if they are not a hot spot location (but with strict regulations). Masks being worn are pretty common here (we are wearing them). Our traffic is much lower and people when outside are consistent keeping 6ft from each other. We have queues for essential stores and prepared food is takeout only. Restaurants are prepping for reopening by reducing tables and chairs to distance people. They also have new cleaning regulations. I am hesitant to jump back into that for about 3 weeks after the states reopen to see if outbreaks happen. I’m planning to wear masks next fall too in case it reoccurs as our CDC is concerned that is likely to happen. I figure pound of cure and penny wise since it isn’t a huge inconvenience to me... I’m a retired OR Nurse so wore masks 😷 most of my life. Stay safe everyone

I'm in British Columbia, Canada.. more specifically in the Lower Mainland. Closest big city, Vancouver about an hour drive from where I live. Gasoline consumption (for me) has gone from $200 / month to $20 /month. I'm not upset by staying at home. I used to wish I could and always felt guilty if I just did it anyway. Now I get to stay home guilt free, however, I have not gone to the beach yet, but now I think I must go even if the restaurants don't open. I'll have to just take a picnic lunch.... No biggy.
We have the same slow moving queues to get into major stores like Costco. I know people who refuse to go because of it..
Some children have gotten chemical burns on their skin from sitting in the now 'sanitized' shopping carts with short pants and bare legs. The curve here is flattening, so better days ahead we hope. Life may never go back to 'normal' but that might be a good thing....Having sustenance and covering I'll try to be content...

I was dying at that group of young men in the begining of the vid - especially the one desperate to plug himself!🤣 That was too funny, but hey! At least it shows how well known you are becoming!!!🤗🎉
Though not many stores were open it looks like more & more people are getting out & about. Your downtown area is so gorgeous! It almost reminded me of a themes park's main street after closing when you still have those few folks loitering!
Sadly, I dont think the people in my city have ever obeyed the rules to stay home as the few times I/we had to go out for groceries or pharmacy the roads & stores were just as crowed! Mom is high risk so the 2 times she has gone out she has worn a mask (but I can't stand mine😒) & we always wear latex gloves. Of course we are in stores where we could possibly touch an infected cart or countertop. So thankful for our big back yard where we can at least go spend time in the fresh air w/ our flowers!

So much for social distancing, surbiton and Kingston are the same, I think everyone who think that they'll never contract it or pass it on has had enough of staying either home or close to home

I've a feeling in years to come people will miss the quiet pace of life we've seen during lock down. My partner and I have loved it and we're going to maintain social distancing until a vaccine is found as we aren't prepared to die for a Tory government or any other.

I appreciate your sentiment but the chances of a vaccine are really very slim. SARS Cov-2 will just become one of those viruses we have to learn to live alongside, like HIV, SARS-1, MERS, etc. Take care though.

Worthing seems to be doing a good job. Much the same here in small town USA. The big box retailers are where people wear mask here, perhaps 30 to 60 percent of people wear mask when grocery shopping. The worst I've seen was this past weekend, a D.I.Y big box retailer was crowded with people, few mask and buying the usual stuff they could do without. Nice warm sunny day etc. My guess is don't look for any huge amount of opening up, as the numbers are still climbing.

The Saturday before Mother's Day here in Western Australia was pretty disastrous for infection control.
Erstwhile deserted shopping centres were teaming with non mask wearing customers.
I expect a fresh surge of reported cases at the end of May.
The police/government's heavy handed approach in the UK appears to be doing little to garner support for sensible behaviour from what I can tell.

It saddens me that all the cafes are shut. Cafes are a lifeline for the lonely. Loneliness can kill. It ought not to be beyond the wit of man to devise a system whereby staff and customers can stay safe - tables two and a half metres apart, not more than two people at a table, regulated entry and exit, buffet service with screens, masks and meticulous hygiene. Blanket closure seems draconian . . .

    • @dcarbs2979

Quite the opposite for me. I'm enjoying being in and concerned about being the wierd one when I keep social distancing when everyone else is being normal. Shared tables and utensils are asking for spread of viruses. Maybe introduce a bring-your-own cup and stand up away from tables?

James Neilson Graham As a former hospitality worker it doesn't sadden me at all that cafes are shut. The staff are paid little enough as it is, I don't know anyone who would be happy to work serving food and drink that could easily be prepared at home to customers who won't gove a second thought to if the staff actually want to be there or not.

Hallo Sir. I enjoyed watching your video. I live near Düsseldorf Germany although I originate from the Leicester area of the UK.. It is forbidden to go into any shop or public building and public transport of any kind without a mask..you can either be banned from the shop/ supermarket or at the most be fined...but the lockdown is slowly getting lighter, schools and kindergarten are slowly opening as are childerens playgrounds. To combat the lockdown I go down to my allotment where I am well out of the way from anybody. Stay safe, stay well.

Hello. I have worked often in Dusseldorf and other cities. Do you know Mettmann just outside the city? Interesting to hear how German responses to Covid compare with the UK. Do you think Germany did well? I personally think that mask wearing wont work well currently in the UK with current generations as 1. We dont have the culture for it, a percentage of people will reject them and object to it. 2. We didnt have sufficient stocks of them before the outbreak to issue or sell them cheaply. Stocks got bought up quickly. Not many people will make them at home either.
Generally I think the UK has responded well, people quite cheerful on the whole. The high UK Covid deaths are probably down to how deaths are recorded. I am quite sure they record 'Died WITH Covid' not 'Died FROM Covid' how accurate the tests are we dont know, have heard of many 'false positives.' The high level of testing in Germany was impressive but after a couple of weeks I had the thought that mass testing may not be useful as one could contract it the next day, so what use is the test really? Only shows a snapshot of time. Plus, again, how accurate were the tests?
Anyway all the best from Sussex, England.

Interesting- it was weird when the lockdown first started and the streets were quiet-I must admit I like to see people about -feels a bit more like normality( whatever that is) though I like the fresher air and the lack of cars. It must be similar to what it was like in the past with fewer cars. I walked into Horsham the other day, first visit for a while and for a specific reason and I was encountering a few people but the town was very quiet. It will be fascinating to see how we look back on this. As I've not been spending money , my bank balance has improved but at the same time, like many people, I have worries concerns about my future prospects so I am anything but smug about that.

How is life sustainable having to distance like this? Anything that’s bought in conveniently due to the virus, like the guidelines, any laws and even maybe electronic currency, isn’t being done without any forethought at all. Extremely convenient if you ask me.
