Trains, Barge Canal & Steaks By the Track

- It's wintertime on the Florida S-Line. Trains are fewer right now, so we have to get on the road and hunt 'em down.
Plus, I learn a few things on this trip including some facts about the old Cross-Florida Barge Canal.
I know we’re not the only ones who get excited when there’s a notification from Distant Signal… 🤣 Another beauty Mr. Harmon!
Hello virtual railfan, I’m a big fan

Lucky duck
Often wonder 🤔 how many of the Crew Members recognize when the “Distant Signal” man is out monitoring their trains on the High Iron ? My Guess is Yes. 👍🙏
I'd always give Danny an extra toot on the whistle. I usually forgot he was listening on the scanner until it was too late. Some of the crews remember in time and say hello
Chasing trains, exploring, and cooking out, all with your son. What a lucky man you are.
I always hit the "like" button before I even watch the video, because I've never been disappointed. 👍
Danny, Your channel is the best. Your narration is second to none. Thank you
He narrated the crossing gates going up - we all know the crossing gates go up - but Dan does it with **Style** 👌👌
He works in advertising and does voiceover work for commercials, so he has a lot of experience.
You, Sir, and this channel, are just about the best thing that’s ever happened to RUclips! Please keep it up, or I’ll have nothing to look forward to!
Damn those steaks looked good!
Love the little "Cookin' with Railfan Danny" segment! :)
Yep, cooking the beans while they’re still in the can is genius to avoid lugging around heavy and bulky pots and pans, too bad it’s kind of a slow process on low heat to avoid catching the label on fire and subsequently tainting your own beans with whatever noxious fumes would be produced from the label burning up.
Another spectacular video Danny! Its always a great day when you post a new video for us railfans. Those steaks looked delicious and figured they had to be quite tasty! Thanks again for sharing your videos with us along with your PRICELESS time and effort! Cheers from Delmar, Delaware.
"why are we going to the boys camp" made me actually LOL. Love you Danny.
Danny, you should start a cooking show and call it "Danny's Rail-side Kitchen". 😂
A new Distant Signal video with Danny and Robert are always awesome to relax to on a beautiful evening!!!!
Ya know Dan, couldn't get any better than spending the day with your son, railing and eating a good campfire meal. Enjoy these times together!
Take care!
You got that right, Otto. Gotta enjoy it while you can.
Just a happy accident, but I was cooking a steak (ribeye, my favorite cut) when I stumbled on this episode. Seared in a cast iron pan and finished in a 500° oven. I was biting into my steak just about the time your supper was interrupted by the CSX train at Lochloosa. Excellent show as always, Danny. For some reason I didn't associate a barge canal with Florida, when I read the title. Like you, I learned something new. I initially thought you might have ranged far afield to the CSX, ex-Conrail, ex-Penn Central, nee-New York Central Mohawk Subdivision along the NYS Barge Canal. Of course, there would be no outdoor grilling of steaks there in the winter. You might lose the camp stove in a snow drift. PS. Rob is correct. Pepper after cooking.
The potash hoppers originate from where I live in the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan…the Potash Corp one were old Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan which was sold to Mosaic a few years ago now…it is one of our provinces biggest exports next to grain and Pulse crops…Love the channel Danny and keep up the great work!!!
Danny there nothing more important than spending as much time with your child and building a meomery together and what a beautiful picture having camp out with you and you son together at
Lake lockloosa !!!!!
Priceless
Love when you put the detailed address locations in. Being from Australia means I'll never visit these spots but I enjoy following your trips virtually via Google Earth. Thanks for the content.
I was looking up some of them on google maps while watching.
What a great video! Seeing the old Seaboard structures still in use brought a smile to my face. And you drove through parts of Florida the remind me of my youth there and what I loved about the State. Cooking, road trip, canal and dam history, and trains. This video had it all 🙂
That super-executive hobo dinner sounds fabulous! Trains, turf, and trawn! Yum!!
Danny, your channel is without peer, no one else comes close to the quality videography and outstanding commentary you give us with every video.I wish that you could post more often, but I settle for whatever and whenever you post. Have a great 2023!
Rich
Thanks very much, Rich. Yes, I wish I could post more often. Maybe next year depending on events...and this economy.
You should check out some other infrastructure related to the unfinished barge canal near Fort McCoy on CR 316. There is a high-level bridge over the Ocklawaha River and surrounding woods. There is even a completed fender system under the bridge at the point where the canal was intended to pass under. Also, on the gulf coast near Inglis there is another completed section of canal and locks. US 19 (as opposed to SR 19 shown in the video) crosses the canal near the locks.
Really nice to see your son and you having a great time together. Doesn't get much better for father and son but to spend time railfanning (and marifanning) together!
Family time, train time, and dinner time. Great idea. 👍🏼👍🏼 thanks, Danny.
You have the best narrator voice ever!!
Danny, you are the best railfanning youtuber ever!
Yep, that trackside dinner looked quite good. As a truck driver, I don't always get good eatin', but maybe I'll treat myself once I'm home.
As a third generation Floridian, I appreciate the look at the Barge Canal and all. My grandpa was an ACL supervisor out of Ocala in the 40s and 50s. I enjoy the railroad stories and views.
Now that I'm retired this is the only place I like to see trains.
Just as dinner was served, the entertainment started.
I live within a few miles of The Island. I knew of the bridge supports for many years but never knew it has been made into a "park" until earlier this week. It is now on my go-to list. See you in Folkston!
Danny, I worked at Channel 13 in the mid to late 1980s in the production department. Worked with Richard Bozeman, Eric Allen, Dave Markwood on Ernie Lee’s Breakfast Beat. I never knew of your train interest and trainfanning.
I’m a train buff, too, I enjoy your videos and saw this one. My grandfather operated huge draglines like those found in the phosphate mines. He lost his life digging the Cross Florida Barge Canal in 1969. This video tells me quite a bit of that area of Florida.
You really do an outstanding job with your videos. Keep up the good work.
Lane Stidham 6/6/2024 2040…
Hi Lane!! Man!!! I certainly remember all those names and worked with them all. Bozeman, Pacifico, Grayson, Paul, Benedict, Macholtz, Kirby. There were dozens of them. Plus all the names from News I worked with. That's why I loved being in Promotion. You literally worked with everyone in the station sooner or later. I didn't have the interest in trains back then that I do now. I was all about TV back then. Coming from small Tallahassee, I was enamored of all that big-city talent and capability. I guess that's why I never left. Thanks for your kind compliments.
As an Ocala/Marion County rail fan, it was great to see the Ocala locations! Thanks Danny. Excellent work as always.
Thank you Roxanne.
I'm a simple man.. I see new Distant Signal video, I watch new Distant Signal video
Man, you make this look like so much fun; driving around Florida, seeing new places, finding little known history, and eating a camp meal out int the fresh air. Sounds like just the sort of thing to do on a day off.
The best voice in railfanning
In real life too 😊
Today's quote - 4:37 'running through Wildwood like a passenger train'. I MUST remember that particular phrase. Thanks, Danny.
I lived in Ocala from 1961 to 1970. And the island. Always was covered with trees. FHP used it has a speed check point.
I would like to make a request that you do a video on why a train derails and what can be done to stop them. I think that all your viewers would enjoy this video
Just when I thought today couldn't get any better, I open up RUclips and lo and behold there's a new video Danny Harmon video. That was the cherry on top 🍨
Appreciate the effort, Danny, of getting videos of two separate train trips into one video.
Dan, this episode was TOP SHELF(well they all are)! The late afternoon, family- buddy and food, by the tracks. I was deeply moved. Thank you.
That's really gratifying, John. Thanks! Yeah, my son, Rob LOVES being in these videos.
Best railfanning channel on RUclips, another great video!!!
that is amazing news that they are rehabing the old building in Wildwood !
Hey Danny. Would love to see a future video on the CSX police. What they do would be very interesting
Another great video Danny !!!
love watching them and all the best to you and your family from a railfan up here in Beautiful Toronto Canada...
Always great content. I enjoyed the video very much. thanks for being there and sharing. 🚂🚃🚃🏝
I clicked before reading the title
400+ miles is really stretching the definition of "local". :-) Great video, thank you for sharing.
Woke up this cold March morning, looked on my Facebook and saw that you posted a new video.. I was so excited but I wanted to save it until tonight to watch it. You made my day. Thank you Danny…
Thank you for this combination video from two of your trips on the Florida S-Line in January and February 2023, Danny. You caught some nice manifest trains with a variety of freight cars on them. The B207 phosphate train to BNSF's Clyde Yard in Cicero, Illinois will either stay together to go out to some point on the BNSF in the agricultural areas of the Midwest or be broken down at Clyde Yard to go all over the MIdwest to be used to fertilize America's farmlands. Thank you for the information about the Cross-Florida Barge Canal. I had never heard of that project. I presume that the Cross-Florida Barge Canal was put forward in the Depression Era of the 1930s as a way of putting people to work.
Trains, Geography and Steaks! U the man Danny😎👍🏾
Haha! Thanks!
I live 10 miles from the S line. Amazing place to see big trains rolling by in the mornings and evenings. Great catches!
Your rail fanning is very entertaining -knowledgable
Bushes bean are my only beans I enjoy. I never did steak without putting pepper on in the beginning but I will try waiting till servicing to put it on. Oh yeah great train vids as always. Thank you
Those PotashCorp cars, I believe they are coming from Saskatchewan where their major potash operations are located.
After a merger with a Calgary based potash company its now known as nutrien.
Brilliant, time with your son, railfanning, steaks,... priceless
Surprised what changes, I was an Electronic Tech on NJT years ago. Whenever loaded auto racks came by they were first. The conrail conductors I knew told me that was a better ride, now you show them in the rear. Interesting!
Great video great to se you and your so. Out on outings again .
Steak and Bush beans, trackside with a fast freight. Yeh buddy! Thanks for the wonderful excursion.
Glad you enjoyed it
Having your son along is just like icing on the cake. I really enjoy getting out and just 'tooling' around with my son just like this. ENJOYED!
So true! Thanks.
Cooking with Danny: The Executive Hobo with Shrimp
Nice video! Especially loved that history lesson about the lock. These are the only videos in school I actually take notes of, everything else is thrown out of my head in 3 seconds lol
Really enjoy the side trips along with great rail footage.
Great memories with your Son as well.
Thanks Danny!
If you ever get tired of shooting train videos, you'd be excellent at creating Florida history videos.
Beutiful Railfan video Mr. Harmon, I just love your videos and the way your narrate them, 📸😊
As always……. First class narration and videography. Thanks Danny.
What a great video. I wish I could have been there with you. Thanks for your time.
Pete in South Carolina, ten minutes from the oldest rail road junction in the world.
Branchville, S.C.
The best narrator on YT!!!!!!!!! He is to trains like Sir David Attenborough is to wild life!!!!! Good one!!!!
i agree 100%
High compliments, Mike. Thanks!
Love the HO BO barbecue looks delicious. So good to share time with your son who has in a common interest with trains Thanks
Another winner! Loved the executive hobo dinner-sure beats fast food along the S line. Your side trips were interesting. I didn’t know the canal was never finished. Obviously you edited out the heavy traffic congestion near The Villages.😂
Hey Danny, M852 is M452 but curfewed. If a line is closed for several hours, the symbol of the trains are changed to an 800: M852 is M452
Oh my, what a great video. A GREAT travel log, with an Executive Hobo meal (looked fantastic), and several train videos to boot.
Keep those Florida train shots coming. Thanks for a great time watching.
Much appreciated, Alan
I have that Camp Chef Everest stove. Used it many times out west in windy, high-elevation situations. The thing is a beast.
Your videos are so soothing, old America soothing. Loved it. Thank you.
Welcome back my friend and be safe out there
Nice informative video with a mix of topics Danny! Well done!
Hey Danny. Nothing like steak and beans by the tracks. Over a camp fire is even better.
Mr. Harmon, I watch your video all the time. Among all the videos that I have watched, yours are the best; the train symbols, explanations, and added aspects are great.
Another great video Mr Harmon. I am a Locomotive Engineer for Amtrak and I am looking to bid into Miami from the cold north of Ohio within the next few weeks and I hope to see you out there on the "high iron." I also like to thank you for your "How To Read CSX Signals" series. They helped me to understand and study for my signal exams for both NS and CSX when I transferred to Toledo from Denver, and now looking forward to the warm weather of south Florida.
Thanks Gerard! Glad those signal videos were some help. Good luck in your bid for the Miami job.!
Beautiful to see Potash Corp. cars on the rails going south. Also good to see more auto racks on the move too as it's time to see more cars in the lots.
I always look forward to your videos. Always edited so well. Glad the steak was good and your correct, it's hard to beat a steak cooked on the grill and trains and having your son there had to make it even better.
Very nice video, Danny. Interesting twist on railfanning Central Florida despite fewer trains.
That Wildwood Sta. Mid-Century architecture is a GEM!
Great trip with your son. Lucky man, mine has no interest in trains. Yes like yourself I try to bring some food and if the weather is good, cook it trackside. Depending on where, I've had some interesting looks from passersby. Adding a side trip with some history just seems to fit right in with railfanning. Great one Danny and he's right about the pepper !
Thanks Steve. Well, Rob doesn't have any interest in trains either, but he does love road trips so if I combine a side excursion into a railfanning day he's all in.
Great tip about pepper! Thanks!
In case you didn't know, if you ever see a white painted railroad tie that indicates a drainage pipe or culvert underneath the track
Those peirs were to carry the canal over US301. Not the way you state. . The island was also a place the state troopers would sit to catch speeders. I know this for a fact. Because I lived in Ocala.
How the hell are you supposed to build a canal on a bridge!?
Random comment, but some of those nature shots were beautiful! I love my state
Ah, i loved the video! Been to Florida once, sadly did not do much of any trainspotting.
Florida is a shithole
When I heard that DJI record button sound on the ground camera I knew we were going to be treated to some drone footage. 😂
Thanks for another fantastic Harmon Studios production! Out!
Another brilliant video Dan, I particularly liked the Surf n Turf ! :)
Thanks Danny. Reminds me of some memorable father and son days out with trains that I have enjoyed with my own son, sadly too few anymore as we live far apart but close at heart!😂
Danny Harmon has the best damn train video’s ever.
1:45 I bet the local residents started murmuring a prayer of gratitude for the lack of noise. Shortly after the driver broke the silence. 😀
Your a awsome narrator Danny , love your videos !
Always good to spend some time with Danny and the trains!
Danny needs his own cooking show
Great video as always! Need to take a break from the harsh winter here in Canada, and visit Florida sometime!
There is a reason that everybody else wants to be like you Danny. Nobody else even comes close. "The master of the high iron". Nuff said.
Mark McGowan is a retired SP and UP signalman in Tehachapi of all places. He will tell you straight up, he knows tracks, he don't know crap about running trains. Between you two, and what I learned 60 years ago in my REA days, I think that is a pretty good education.
One Grampa was an REA agent, The other was a roofer. I was always packing freight, or packing shingles. But I miss them both greatly.
Thanks Paul. That's a very nice compliment.
