- Today we're talking about the best trimmer line out (in my opinion), and why I think it's held up the best out of anything we've used. I'm not getting paid to say this in any way, I just wanted to share our 4 year update on using this trimmer line.
What trimmer line do you guys use out in the field? Have you tried this brand? Do you use something different? Let me know in the comments down below.

What trimmer like do you guys use? Love to hear what else is out there.
Ps, not to be redundant but this isn’t sponsored by ECHO or anyone. I just really like their trimmer line and believe it does a really good job 👍
i use the orange stihl line
I used the stihl line for years. Switched to the black diamond and there's no comparison.
Husqvarna 129L straight shaft with the Echo speed feed 400.
I was using rotary for a bit, then stihl, then gator line.95 twist. I just picked up 95 black diamond and really like it. Super clean. I agree though it is a little brittle. Might try 1.05 next. Just do like the clean cut of a thinner line.
Hey Brian I was wondering how many costumers do you have?
Mowing,
Leaf removal,
Snow removal.
I’m started my lawn mowing business this year and it been really good.
I love the Black Diamond line. It even holds up to chain link fence well.
Yes, black diamond! Air is a fluid and the helical twist of the line cuts down on the air drag so more power from the engine goes to cutting the grass. Same helical concept found on large stacks in chemical plants. Black diamond is also quieter for this reason.
Air is a fluid. Air is a fluid? Ehh, no.
@@permasupra33 for many purposes, air is similar enough to a fluid that it might as well be.
For flow and resistance testing, air is enough like a fluid, to get good testing information. I did pick up some black Diamond, .105. Can’t wait to try it!!
@@permasupra33yes it is. Well behaves like a fluid.
@@permasupra33 Well, check the humidity level in air. Ever see a fighter jet with a cloud off the wings and tail? That is compressed air and water vapor.
I’ve tested all of them, bit of a perfectionist I guess, I found the .95 Black Diamond to cut nice like you mentioned, but it doesn’t edge clean nor does it last very long, and the .105 felt clumsy. The best .95 I’ve found is the Redmax, cuts just as clean as the Black Diamond, but has a cleaner look when edging and is much more durable. Not sure why you didn’t mention edging in your video, but we edge every yard every day, you’d think it’s something you’d mention when talking about trimmer line.
Awesome. We use an edger every other week to edge. So I don’t evaluate our trimmer line for edging sidewalks and driveways but to each their own
We use the same line it works incredible!! I’m 5’8” and use the Darwin’s grip on all weed eaters and edgers.
I bought the Darwin's grip at the beginning of the year and yes it does help a little bit with pressure on the back however the piece that holds the rip at its pivot point on the trimmer needs to be improved drastically. 60 bucks is a lot of money for some of that only lasted two months before no matter how tight you tighten it it wouldn't hold tight anymore
High strength locktite. Works perfect
@@sblawncare5115 I spent $60 on a little bar I shouldn't have to do any more modifications LOL but that's a good idea
@@Tobynsocks I completely agree. But it does solve the problem lol
It seems like it would be bulky and cumbersome. I like to be able to flip trimmers every which way with little effort/, obstruction. I only see that bar being helpful for, like the dude said, trimming ditches or something. I've seen people use trimmers to cut large patches of grass, but I'm not that guy
I started using the Ballard Samurai Fury line this year and love it!. Great price too. Save about 10 bucks a spool over the ECHO line but I like them both.
Black diamond, it lasts a long time. Using it on a 2620T. No complaints! Echo for life baby!
Yessir same exact setup for me
@@fa5joe860 the 2620T is a beast!
Been using black diamond for over a calendar year now. Easily my favorite trimmer line I’ve ever used but more than that I genuinely believe that the Darwins grip is up there with the speed feed 400 head as one of the best inventions for a string trimmer ever. Jesus bless y’all.
Jesus: the Ultimate Lawn Mower
Just my 2 cents. I use black diamond also. The thicker line is great for edges and along chain length fence. For just regular weed eat grass I think the 95 does a better job. I think you sacrifice one over the other. I don't do a lot of fences so that's why I chose the thinner line. 🤷♂️
Anyway another great video. Keepem coming!!!
We've run the same Echo line for 3 years now! That stuff will cut through just about anything!!
I also use Black Diamond, the .95 size. I like how it cuts, its very effective in both manicured grass as well as tall/overgrown grass and even thick weeds as well. I used to use Echo's Crossfire line which I also like as well but it seems that I always managed to get the Crossfire to jam up inside the head, due to the cross-section profile design of the line. Black Diamond I feel has less drag and you can hear a difference too between it and the Crossfire. Like you, I run the 2620 as well. Love it!
Brian,
I’m just a homeowner, we bought a house on 2 acres this year. The yard had been mowed but several areas were overgrown with tall grass, weeds, and small trees.
The first string trimmer I bought was a light weight 18 volt cordless unit with an 11 inch cut and 6000 rpm no-load speed. I have tried an even dozen trimmer lines and have the following observations: This trimmer with modest power and a small cut greatly benefited from the heavier line, which is 0.105 max. It seems that the higher weight line carries more energy into the initial cut and makes more progress. Twisted line definitely cuts better, especially on the tough stuff. This trimmer has useable but modest power it is more sensitive to the line used. When I tried 0.105 in round line it didn’t cut as well as the 0.080 and 0.095 round.
I then upgraded to a 36 volt cordless trimmer with a 15 inch cut and 6500 max no-load rpm. This is the power I need. Round trimmer line works much better at this higher tip speed. It came with the green 0.080 Makita twisted line which flew straight and cut well. Edging along concrete did wear it quickly but that’s probably my rookie technique.
The two best lines I’ve tried are the Echo Black Diamond and Rotary Black Vortex both in 0.105. Almost as good is the Weed Warrior Pro Twist 0.105 by Shakespeare. These twisted lines cut better and my experience is the same as yours that twisted line benefits from upsizing to 0.105 in. I’m continuing to try these lines on Saint Augustine and large weeds.
Thanks for the tip Brian! I just picked up some Black Diamond. Crossfire and Cable Twist were my favorite until I realized that there were others that weren’t high pitched and harsh on the ears even with earplugs in. I hope you guys take the string noise into consideration. It makes a huge difference when you notice less high frequencies. You rock!🤘🏻
Echo Black Diamond is what I use year round. I’ve tired Stihl line, ugly line, other echo line, Husquvarna line, etc. I’ve found that Echo Black Diamond has been the best for me. It cuts through tall stuff and regular manicured stuff like it’s butter.
It doesn't break on you every other second? It does for me. Terrible line.
Weed warrior commercial, cuts like a dream, lasts longer
I ❤ it
Hello Brian, so glad the best into music is back! I was using Stihl CF3 pro in .095 then I tried the echo black diamond .105 and never went back. It cuts better and flies flat. Love it. Keep up the good work.
I use an echo trimmer with speed feed head and the .105 I like more but it seems get caught up in the feed head a lot for me. Do you have the same issue at all?
@@jeremybruce654 I use a stihl 94 with a speed feed head and have no issue at all. I make it shorter than what I ran the .095 at.
We use Stihl everything EXCEPT for trimmers. 2620’s and 3020’s. That 3020 is an absolute monster early in the year when everything is thick and wet. I buy the Vortex .105 because I can’t find big spools of black diamond - although I do use the small spool for my personal property, I think it gives just a little bit cleaner cut. And the Darwin Grips are a life changer no doubt.
I went on a tear last year and tried something like 10 different brands of trimmer line but, I always make my way back to Rotary Vortex .095. I did like echo the black diamond .095 but it had a little more ripping and tearing compared to rotary vortex. It all really depends what you trim, right?! I'm in the suburbs all day so I prefer a twisted line because I think it edges the best, love the content brotha!
Corey, are you speaking of Rotary Black Vortex professional line?
Hands down, the best trimmer lines I know of are those monofilament fishing lines that are discarded from longliners. Usually treated as scrap or rubbish, I will use those lines of 2.4mm or 2.7mm diameter or nearest available, so as to not overpower what my 35cc brushcutter can handle. The trick though, if you can't find them is 'treat' your store bought lines in a bucket or drum of water; to assimilate the 'saltwater treatment' that commercial fishing lines go through. You can try the method at home for a whole day minimum; or a whole week at your convenience. I get my lines of commercial longliners, for free by the sack full. No price to pay- except for having to unravel tangled lines, like those that sharks mess up. Try it if you can get your hands on them.
I bought some of the new black/orange Stihl line .095 for my new Stihl FS56 RC-E trimmer. I got the 114’ spool. I don’t use enough to buy a big spool. It will also fit on my Husqvarna 28L string trimmer that I have had for close to ten years. My new FS-56 is lighter and longer than my Husqvarna. During my first use of the new FS-56 it went through about half the spool of regular Stihl orange line and I refilled it with 25’ of the professional grade orange and black line. I hardly had to bump the head with the new line during my second trimming day. I have never used Echo black diamond line but will try some, next time I need some.
just a piece of info for taller stihl users, i use the handle from an edger on the line trimmer and it helps with not having to bend over when trimming.
I'm using Husqvarna for super thick stuff. But I'm gonna try out the black diamond for lawns.
This channel is so addictive 🤔 I love it
I'm just starting out in Lawn Maintenance
I have learned so much from your channel keep the videos coming 🔥💯✅
🤘👍💪
Husky Titanium Force .105
Black diamond doesn’t hold up quite as well as the Stihl Cf3 Pro when it comes to overgrowth but the black diamond does good on regular cuts…IMO
Thank you Brian definitely helped me narrow down the ideal trimmer line for the jobs i do
I have used Black Diamond for the past 4 years. I am so sold on this trimmer line. I can even cut through small tree limbs. I use either .095 or .105.
I have been using the Oregon magnum gator line for a while now and it really seems to hold up well around hard surfaces.
I have 1/2 mile of no-climb horse fencing. Magnum Gator holds up better than anything else.
Hey Brian! Sam Hanson here, from Bismarck North Dakota! Say, I see you’re nearing 150,000 subscribers! That’s pretty good! 👍😎🇺🇸
Hey thanks Sam!
I use Rotary Vortex. If I’m not mistaken they were the first to make this style trimmer line. It looks virtually the same as Echo’s but Rotary’s 0.95, which is what I use, is less brittle than Echo’s.
Hey, I use the black diamond .105 line and Husqvarna xpro .105 in my bigger trimmers and black diamond .095 in the smaller ones. I try other lines quite often but keep coming back to those.
I love the echo black diamond line. I use the .095...... I have the Darwin grip too. It is worth the money.
I like the Echo cross fire line, its great
Stihl CF3, have tried many others but this works best for my company.
I have been using the same line that season and love it
Just switched over to the Black Diamond. Absolutely love the stuff!
We use black diamond as well! We were using shapessphere but found black diamond about a month ago. We stopped using as much line and we got a cleaner cut. Love it!
Work for a local municipality and we use the red Max .105 braided line , we love it , only complaint would be the price but I don’t pay out of pocket like you do
Black diamond is the way to go buddy 👍🏻been use in it since 2014
I fr just got my Black Diamond .105 in the mail today!!! It’s awesome!
Using 105 line you have to have the bigger cc engines to move the line and head
Black diamond! Best thing handed to me since the speed feed head
The Darwin grip is amazing. Been using them on my trimmers for 2 years. I'm 5'10 with lower back trouble. This thing helps you keep your back straight, therefore getting rid of any back pain using a trimmer. Not paid, just happy.
I’m using the Echo Black Diamond .095 (that’s what my trimmer uses). I bought it on recommendation from a professional in my area. I sure go through a lot of line just for tall thick weedy grass! No fences, no concrete around just overgrown lawns. I’m tired of restringing all the time. Next I’m trying Husqvarna Titanium X Pro. It’s a line within a line so it may be too stiff, I’ll see. It was based on recommendation from Juggernaut on RUclips channel. If you like the Echo line, great, but I don’t. I’m anxious to see how the Husky line works.
That handle looks like it might help out with the pole saw attachment as well
Hey Brian I just started using Silver Streak Razor Trimmer Line.105 and it work pretty good you should give it a try and keep up the hard work and have a good weekend
Smarter Everyday had a great video on this topic recently
I use the yellow trimmer line from homer depot, pro something, not sure if it's their house brand but liked it better than the BD line. I have a srm 225 with the .080" line, a shindaiwa 2320 with .095" line and a 3020 with the .105" line. Inside flower beds the .080" line is great just off idle. Gets the weeds and leaves the flowers. Seems everyone is out of Darwin's grips. Might see some at the gie.
I really like the rotary black vortex. It seems to last longer and trims nicer etc. I have not tried this one might need to give it a shot. What do you do with the extra pieces that are left over when you replace the trimmer line in the trimmer head? I figured off a spool of line you could get 20 pieces which would equal another full head of line. Money saved to make more money. 🙃 Good video as always. Thanks.
Best line for the money I've found
Srm2620t with .095 black Diamond. I did a 2 acre yard with no need to bump the head.
What really matters is if people use twisted/"braid" line vs the smooth line. I have an off brand and it still kicks ass. When I run out, I'll have to try your suggestion out next
Surprised how many pulls it took to start that whip. My shindaiwa has been a first/second pull machine for the last 20 years.
I'm using Stihl X line (lime green in color) .105.. But I'm just trimming around the house and propane tank.
I'll give it a shot around my 40 acres.
Haha I remember that giveaway. Got a sample tried it, brought a 3lb spool. Switched last year to copperhead line. Looking to switch back. Tried several but the black diamond seem to left the best overall finish. Great quick topic!
I run Stihl products so I use Stihl’s CF3 Pro trimmer line
Yep Black Diamond is the way go I currently use the .095 but want to try the .105 for the heavy field trimming! Great vid Brian!!
Is .105 thicker than the .095?
@@kendrickray7827 Yes
Always enjoy these videos, Brian! Keep up the great work.
I bought the echo black diamond when it first come out and love it
Black diamond echo .105 is the best. Clean cut last longer. Upper echelon
I got a spool of black diamond, .105. Always check out what the professionals are using. It makes the companies compete to make better products. Thanks for the video!!
It won't. I tried them all and I'm a Echo guy but Husqvarna trimmer line is the best and it's not even close.
Just a DIY guy but if i ever run out of this spool of Stihl line i may give it a look.
Hey, I am late. We use Oregon 22-805 Gatorline Heavy-Duty Professional Magnum 3-Pound Spool of .105-Inch-by-564-Feet Square String Trimmer Lin. we have real grass here on St. Thomas. My yard is now overgrown and I have had it chest high and the stihl 250 is the weapon of choice when it is that high, also I have steep inclines and loose rocky footing in one area and other deep ground covering with deep boulder that can swallow a ankle and break a leg. That is my yard, a whole 1/4 of a acre, bad ass ground and I have boulder the size of a small house, they call this island rock city.
Best trimmer line ever👍🏻 never had much luck with echos trimmers though.
I have been using Stihl X-Line .95. I too have tried many and this seems to cut clean and is durable. I have not tried the Black Diamond, maybe one day I will.
Thanks for the video, man. I've been using squared line and butchering my edges. Will definitely try this out
Thanks Brian. I will be trying the 105. The .95 was no good for me. Using husquavana right now. Also need that Darwin’s grip for my sore back. Have a good one and take care.
It's a good line. I use TitaniumForce XP .95
and Oregon Gatorline round
.80
I tried black diamond .95 prefer the echo cross fire.95 over it honestly cross fire always been my favorite
I like the Stihl Cf3 pro line. It’s like the black diamond but not near as brittle if you run 0.095.
This video was a great “Double Tap”
I switched from the .105 black diamond to redmax cable twist .105 last year I feel it cuts good and hold up better then the black diamond
I'm still waiting for your review on the phantom line from the Ballard short video I seen! I've also been using sthil square .095 line. Since they gave me a sample when I bought my sthil trimmer. But I appreciate your videos. As I am 3 years in on my business and any advice helps. So thank you!
I'll cover that in a week. We just ran through our first spool and I just ordered 2 more ready rolls. I love the stuff.
Thank you for responding. I just ordered the Saber edging blades. From Ballard. And I got the advanced chute blocker for my zero turn. After watching your video. And I love it. Thanks again for your time and effort you put in your videos. Helps the smaller guys like me have a guide book so to speak.
I use a Shindawa trimmer with a quick feed head. The best line I've ever used I CANT REMEMBER WHAT IS WAS EXACTLY LOL BUT WAS STIHL, multi colored. And it was my favorite
Brian,
Thanks for this video, I really appreciate the effort you put into it as well as the info. I’m 6 ft 5 in tall and cannot even find a shoulder strap long enough for me. I tracked down the Darwin’s Grip a couple days ago but didn’t know if it would help my back. Your video is what I needed, thanks again.
You bet Mark!
Back to using Stihl trimmer line, find it's still the best
Great video Brian, I use Stihl .105 works awesome!
We use black Diamond as well but prefer the 95
Goodman Lawn Care Est 2015, we use Vortex.
I going to get some of that! I was just looking to try some new trimmer line.
We really like the Oregon platinum line. We've tried the black diamond but never really cared for it. Although we've never used the thicker black diamond stuff, so it could have just been the thin stuff.
I use the thick black diamond and that stuff works great
I soak my trimmer line spool,, regardless of the brand ,in a water bucket and leave it there, , until I need to use it.. This keep the line soft and prevents early cracking or breaking....
We go through it pretty quick, I guess I never understood the water bucket part and keeping it wet.
From what I’ve read you’re not supposed to submerge in water but put it in a bucket with about an inch of water water. At least that’s what the Oregon website says that’s what I’ve been doing for years
I've used so many brand's, and I don't notice huge differences in life, other than going from a 0.95 to 0.105. I burn thru line so much, that I usually stick with cheap 0.105, for everything.
Ever since it came out, Black Diamond all day. Cuts the best by far, almost edges like a blade, runs the straightest, and the ends don't fray like other lines ( which is why people think it's "brittle" ). And I use 95, the thinner the better. Worth every penny.
Breaks on me constantly. I hate it.
@@TheMeanArena sounds like you're leaning on it too heavily....or you got a bad batch. Thinner string doesn't last forever, but it cuts great.
@@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power That's what some others said. I may have been sold that old stock from when they first released it when it was bad and they corrected it later.
@@TheMeanArena I've gotten a funky spool before, but I still love the way it cuts 🤷♂️😂
@@Pure_KodiakWILD_Power Definitely cuts great no doubt.
I use the Echo Crossfire! Good stuff right there.
I've used Shakespeare ugly twist, my stihl trimmer came with the orange stihl line I haven't used it all yet. I got this line called savage from Lowe's I'm gonna try next
That Savage is what I've been running for awhile now. Came across is because my normal was out. I take care of a cemetary with 2000+ head stones and the Savage last at least twice a long. Edges good, takes chain link fence better than most and a clean cut.
We use red max is a twisted line and it works the best for us in Romeo Michigan
The Oregon supertwist magnum and the maxpower premium supertwist work great for me. Both .105 diameter
But I will try the echo black diamond to see how it works also. I am always looking. I used to use the Oregon square magnum and depends on on the edge cut good but if hit the flat side was pulling the grass
Darwin's grip. 3rd best thing on my trimmer
Well, I see the advantage to removing the trimmer guard is lot longer timberline.
Followed your suggestion mate! I am an absolute Black diamond lover now, used 2.7 for a whole season, works great, and never breaks like red Stihl 2.7.
Just a quick question, does your Strimmer feels good for a long time when the line is out on that length, also strimming long grass?
I thought it was dangerous for the engine. I keep it twice as short as in this video example. Cheers.
I really like the x line 105 by Stihl
The echo line and Vortex line are very similar in how long they last but I think the vortex line last a little bit longer then the echo
I use the Echo Red string and it does a great job.
I love the Darwin’s grips but be careful those things will strip out if you move it around to much
I am trying the Savage Supreme .095 and it does really good. Bought it from Lowes Hardware. I have some if the Echo Black Diamond .105 that I will be trying as well. A friend of mind tried the echo black diamond .095 size and he is not liking it. Maybe he's not winding it correctly, because it gets hung up in the cutter head. I think he's going back with the sthil brand.
The echo black diamond is good, alittle awkward to wind. It does last long though. My nephew swears by redmax line being the best period.
I use Savage .105 it's about time someone agrees with me on brand, it's better than black diamond, I've been at this for a long time. SAVAGE IS BETTER THAN BLACK DIAMOND
I like the black diamond .105 as well
Smarter every day did a cut quality video and found Shakespeare like that cut clean.
Black diamond spins faster/lighter, last longer, cuts great. It’s my new line of choice.
