Hi, I have a quick question, would you say that there is a significant difference between the SP-303 sampler and the current smaplers that are embedded within the DAW such as Logic and FL? I use logic, but I have seen great producers like MF DOOM and Madblig lovign that SP-303 sampler... just really want to know why they liked the instrument and if having one in the current day could be beneficial likewise.
It’s def got it’s “sound” coz of it’s sample rate options and fx. It’s now 20 year old tech (although brand spanking new when Madlib was making them beats for Madvilliany) so it’s got it’s limitations compared to working with a modern DAW but I much prefer the hands on approach of sampling and chopping manually, I find that workflow and the limitation breed creativity. It’s a “what can I make this do” mentality vs the infinite possibilities of a DAW. Esp things like it’s Vinyl Sim Compression (which is kind of it’s signature) I wouldn’t know if there are plug ins that get close to it. I dunno, even tho it’s a much slower process I find it more organic and rewarding to just have this and a turntable and make a beat opposed to making music with a mouse which of course I do a lot of also.
Nonjuror okay I’m trying to learn how to make beats with just resample mode because pattern mode keeps cutting off my drums in the beginning, I guess I come in too early but it takes me hours to get it right. Super annoying, I guess resample mode is slightly more organic as is rides through a couple bpms give or take
Yeah man, pattern seq takes some getting used to. I sometimes like to quantize just the kick & hat on the 1st beat of bar 1, then turn off qtz to record the rest of the drum pattern.
Hey ! I was looking to pick up one of these for my set up. Instead of loading wav files in to sample can you record the audio that is coming thru and save it to the pads ? I wanted to use it with my turntables but it’s pretty much just an analog set up and didn’t want to add a computer unless needed
No computer required, I run my turntable directly into the Line In. 303 def enriched my beat making life, it’s processing time is not as fast as the 404a but it has it’s personality that there’s no substitute for.
