    What version do you prefer? Any visual or sound differences I missed in the footage?
    The Sega Genesis port looks fantastic. I think the creator nailed the visual style of game despite the lower color palette of Sega Genesis.
    Please note: The content comparison doesn't show all differences. I picked the most significant IMO.

      Unfortunately the Saturn version had to be ported from the PS1 version instead of the other way around. Even though it's the better of the two for 2D games it therefore looks worse.

      @@miamimagicians The game was released in 1997. At that time SNES was out of competition. The N64 was a hard case. It was not the best console for 2D games but my guess is Sony had some exclusive deal with Konami.

  • @JustinC721

    An interesting thing about this game is that it is 3D game that is projected as a 2D game. What you see on the screen are polygons arranged to as tiles similar to what would have been used on older consoles like the SNES, NES, Genesis, etc.
    This was an easy way for the devs to work with the PS1's architecture whilst also making for some easy shortcuts. Instead making a frame by frame animation for the axe sub-weapon, they can just make the polygon rotate and fall off the screen.
    This being the case is why the Sega Saturn port is inferior when it should actually be superior. As it is a 2D powerhouse running a 3D game that is projected in 2D and ported from another system. The only way to ever make this game shine on the Saturn would be to remake the whole game from scratch. I hope someone does this someday.

    • @texboy98
      @texboy98 2 года назад

      I 100% agree! just one thing about your axe comment. The same result could be achieved in a 2d system using rotation and translation effects.

    • @JustinC721
      @JustinC721 2 года назад +6

      @@texboy98 Yes, that is true. I used that as an example of how using polygons would have made it easier for devs to program certain animations.
      In a true 2D game, the animation would have needed keyframes, and/or rotate and translate each pixel.
      Whereas, if you're dealing with polygon, you can just make your tile and draw a path and the rest is done for you.

    I maintain that the PS1 version is the best one, despite having lesser content than the Saturn or PSP/PS4 versions. The former due to the performance issues and the latter because of the lack of control options (especially in the PS4 version's case, which renders the R2 and L2 triggers completely useless for whatever reason).
    I would like to play a version that has a playable Saturn Maria Renard without playing the Saturn version, since the version of Maria Renard in the PSP/PS4 versions is really hard to play as.
    I'm shocked that there is a fanmade Genesis version and it looks extremely impressive!

    Saturn's Dracula X is a flawed masterpiece... such a huge titan with a rotten core. The console capabilities for 2D are way better than the PS but the porting(wasn't programmed from scratch) was terribly done by another division of Konami Computer Entertainment. The Sega Saturn can handle transparencies and complex 3d art when the programmers know how to harness the power of the 2 processors. (Sonic R and Radiant Silvergun are proof of that) Dracula X for Saturn was a real shame and one of the final nails in the coffin of the console.

      the saturn can only do transparencies with the background (VDP 2, I think?) layer. The example that comes to mind is in Guardian Heroes, where one of the characters cape has a cool transparent effect that doesn't show other sprites behind it, only the background. Any other saturn transparencies share this limitation. Or they are "faked" using meshes

Saturn was a really hard piece of crap to properly harness its power but the port of Castlevania sucks for so many reasons more than the struggle between SH1 and 2 processors. Capcom and SNK ported 2d arcade games to a system designed to handle 2d arcade style graphics. SOTN uses a 3d engine and was originally programmed for the PS. Any 3d playstation game ported to the saturn is going to have major compromises. I'm pretty sure every single game ported from PS to Saturn had comparable problems. Blaming the developers for that is pretty ignorant. They would have had to remake the entire game from scratch to make a saturn version that was on par with the PS original, and there is no doubt something like that would have been far outside of the scope/budget of the project.
      They're two systems with vastly different architectures, the PS being built specifically for 3d and the Saturn a weird extension of Sega's arcade board designs with the focus being on powerful sprite scaling and rotation effects (think super scaler games) not polygons. The Saturn could obviously do 3d but it was much more difficult to achieve similar results as the playstation. Almost every game ported from one of these to the other had significant changes made

    You really can't tell a difference when you play symphony of the night on the different platforms because the CRT TVs and their filter help to smooth out the sprites and mesh pixels. Try it out if you don't believe it. Also the psp small screen is also able to smooth out resolution as well too. You only see the difference when you magnify your screen and squint to look for it. For over 25 years you all have been listening to what others have tell you and help you to form an opinion. In life you should go out there to find out the truth and answer for yourselves.
    Yes there are differences but if you play them on the original consoles and TVs in the way they are intended to play you can't really tell at all.

      I have a memory of people touting the new PSP translation as "more accurate to the original Japanese script and therefore better" but I looked into it and it's mostly the old PSX script but reworded a little. So I'll take my DIE MONSTER over whatever PSP says any day of the week.

    doesn't make sense why you would try to compare a unfinished game to a finished version of Castlevania symphony of the night. what makes more sense if you waited till master system / Sega Genesis version of symphony of the night was done as well as the game boy version of symphony of the night. also you totally forgot about Esco's Castlevania symphony of the night. which is also being worked on which wouldn't be a good comparison either because it's currently in the works and is not finished yet. you could have compared The nes version of symphony of the night that you can play on PC though.

    PSP wins.

    Saturn version is the best for me
    I've played it about 99 times, and played the PS1 version first, but never ever would go back to it. It's hollow and unfinished in comparison, even if KCEN totally screwed up the technical side of the game. Luckily The Meduza hack has severely helped fix most of these issues. It's still not perfect but again I would never, ever play the PS1 or PSP version again.
