I found it interesting that Buick placed the power window switches on the driver's door like Pontiac, rather than on the A-pillar like the Cadillac. And I never understood that on this Electra as on the bottom-line model 62 four door, the rear cigar lighters were placed in the post between the front and rear doors, whereas on the Sedan deVille and 60 Special they were in the rear doors. Even stranger, the rear power window switches on all these premium four doors, including the Cadillacs, were just stuck flush on the door trim! I'd always assumed it was part of the GM requirement for all divisions to share so many body parts. This must be a truly rare car with that beautiful factory a/c. Thanks so much!
Growing up in Detroit suburbs , having many relatives in the auto industry , and an aunt and uncle with Buick , it was always said GM would put things on Buick that you couldn't get on a Cadillac , kind of a test on the Buick high end models , then transfered on to Cadillacs if it was a hit with customers , Buicks were always a beautiful car , as good as a Cadillac , just a little less $
A very nice visual presentation of this car. The company where my father worked had an identical model in black. a very stunning car That car was ordered with the optional air suspension (rear only) selected to replace the company's prior year four door Limited hardtop which also with air suspension.. Our neighbor had a Le Saber hardtop in this identical color. We had a red Le Saber convertible that year.. I remember going to the dealer to see the 59's on introduction night, The dealer had five cars on display in the showroom and every one of them had damage to the chrome strips on the rear fins one side or the other. The delivery drivers had not managed to learn how wide the fins were. The overall quality on at least the earliest 59 Buick's was not what Buick owner's expected. Some of the problems were design related. There were several "fix" kits issued soon after the fall introduction. I don't recall ever seeing one of these with such a dark rear window. Perhaps this is related to this car having A/C. There was an individual in town with a Le Saber two door "post sedan" with a manual transmission, When he went through the gars, it sounded just like a late 40's Buick. Late in the model year Buick offered two tone paint combinations on at least some1959 body styles. I can recall the local dealer having one on display in his showroom. I believe it was a 2-door hardtop.

I never thought much of the big Buicks and others of the really large American made cars when I was young but as they and I have aged I have come to really appreciate the elegance and smooth power they offered. Beautiful!
According to the sales brochure, these were called simply a "4-door hardtop." The flattop moniker came later. This one is really great and especially in Lido Lavender. My uncle had a 1959 Buick LeSabre 4-door sedan. I think I have his 1958 license plate from it, when it was new. It has chrome pieces all around it. Lou, you need to sit inside the car when Steve starts it, to show the gas pedal start. You can do that when you show the 1960 convertible.

My Mom (R I P) was a "lead foot" and I was amazed when she would punch it out on the highway. 4 barrel and passing gear....GO MOM GO. Thanks for the memory.

WOW! I love that color. And a flat top! People either love them or hate them. I love them, with that wrap around rear window. All that chrome and gingerbread, very cool What a beautiful car.. Like to see you cover that yellow '58 next to the '59.
Hi Lou! I remember these Buicks like yesterday. The Buick and Cadillac hardtops were designated as “4 window hardtop” (flat top) and 6 window hardtop. The “225” was the overall length in inches. My Dad bought a new 1960 Buick LeSabre 4 door sedan because the 1959 tail fins were “too freaky”. LOL! Thank you again, Lou.

Holy Chromation, Batman! Oh, wow! That is a splendid and lavish hunk of American iron there! This makes me sad in a way seeing how devolved Buick has become peddling chinese junk as Buicks. Look at every inch of this land yacht with easter eggs all over from the grill to the taillights to the backup lights back to the flat top and headlight hoods. And while the chrome slathering from the 1958 was toned down in 1959, it is still radiating sun reflections both inside and out. Lou, you are just the best. You have a who's who in Automobilia and you feature their collections for us to enjoy! Thank you!
Beautiful car! An old timer Buick mechanic told me that these had a lot of workmanship problems that got fixed by the 1960 models. I wouldn’t care! I would take this one in an instant. Factory Air too!
Oh how that takes me back. My grandparents had a Lido Lavender Electra, I'm not sure if it was a 225 or not. My dad had a 59 Invicta flat top, in red with a white top. IIRC, the Invicta trunk mat in his had a houndstooth pattern, it still had the original Seiberling wide whitewall spare tire that came from the factory. Sadly, he sold it in 1973, a year before I became 16. I noticed the featured one had the twin turbine Dynaflow, a much better choice than the triple turbine Dynaflow.

Hi, Lou! Just had to get a closer look at this rare gem! In 1959, Buick changed all of its series names. The Special, Super, Century, Roadmaster and Limited were all out, although the Special did come back as a compact in 1961, the Century returned as an intermediate in 1973 and the Roadmaster was renewed in 1991. In their place were the first LeSabre, the first Invicta and the first Electra and Electra 225. The Electra was named after the sister-in-law of former GM CEO and Buick general manager Harlow Curtice, and 225 was the length of Buick's prestige line cars. Steve's car is definitely unique with the flat top, the lavender paint, the cocked headlamps, wraparound glass front AND rear, and those flying fins, which Buick called "Delta-Wing". Of course, you've always had a knack for finding unique cars like this! Thank you both for giving us all a chance to see it!
My favorite year for Buick! That Flat Top 225 is my favorite version. I love the pointed slanted quad headlights on the front and has that ticked off look! And the same with the taillights. Great video Lou!

What a great car...so elegant...the best color I hve ever seen! A true beauty from every angle. I have to say i like the 1960 better in both front and rear. But Love the chrome on the side of the 59! Who am I kidding - - I'd be more than pround to have either one sitting in my garage...instead of the dust bunnies who currently live there. the drive away at the end was AWESOME!!
In the 60s and 70s, when my Windsor GM employee Dad drove us across the border to Detroit, he'd always say to me, "Keep your eyes peeled for a "Deuce and a quarter".
WOW! What a beautiful car! I didn't realize that Buick made the 225 back in the 50's! I always thought they were a 70's Model only! A Great Car! Thanks Lou!
'59 was the first year for the new Buick line with the Electra, Invicta and LeSabre models. The Limited and Roadmaster were discontinued. As I recall, the Electra sold fairly well but I can't recall ever seeing more than a handful of 225's in Western Canada.

Thank you, Lou for featuring this car! I've been reading several of the other comments and giving my thumbs up to them as well. On another note of interest, the Salt Lake Tribune featured an article on the '59 Electra several years ago. I gave a copy of it to my older brother on his birthday, he being born in 1959 as well. He didn't seem to find much humor or amusement from it as I expected he would. He's not a Buick nut either, like I am. Perhaps you could do a video on Saabs, that's his craze!😂 Thanks again, Lou!👍

Gotta admit that I like the '59 Buicks a little more than the '59 Cadillacs... More "Space Age" looking, without trying too hard. But the 1960 Cadillac... That's a different story. Those WERE road rockets and perfectly portrayed the Rocket Age very elegantly.

wow spectacular. i think for '59 i prefer the buick style to the cadillac...buick IMHO was actually the best engineered of the GM lines at the time, maybe include Pontiac too. in fact I believe that Buick engineered the foundational components for all the '59 makes...the roof, glass, cowl, and the doors. but there were some differences too...full frame, dynaflow, torque tube, maybe some suspension as well. this car is gorgeous

One of the most beautiful 4 door hardtop from 1959. My folks had a 1959 Pontiac Bonneville 4 door hardtop just like this one. Ours was white w/Coral roof. Everyone keeps calling it a "Flat top", but the ORIGINAL NAME was the the 4 door "VISTA DOME CRUISER." GREAT CAR !
Thanks, Steve & Lou: great Classic Buick: always a love for special “Buicks” : ever since my Parent’s 1953 2DR/ Yellow/ Black DYNAFOW @ my 6-7 years old ((except after lots of kids swimming, & trips home in DANK , WET ,plush soggy BACK SEAT,etc)……..

THIS car, in the 2 dr, along with the Invicta 2 dr, are my favorite cars of the fin era. Nothing else comes close for me. One clean concept from nose to tail. The 60 Buicks are ny close seconds.❤
I passed my driver's license, driving my dad's 1959 Buick Le Sabre--convertible! Fire engine Red. The interior was not quite as fancy as this excellent 225 model!...But it was a truly stunning vehicle, and I found myself a little more popular with the ladies, who would want a ride to High School, in 1965!...My dad's Buick had a slightly smaller V8-364ci, 250bhp...With that Dynaflow transmission, the car was a little sluggish, compared to the Hydromatics used in other GM cars. But the overall ride quality was very smooth. The convertible models from that year, 1959, are now going for over $100 grand! IMO, Buick did a better, more "flowing" job of handling the appearance of those large fins...as we know, by the early 1960s, those fins were on the way out! As a young dad myself, I purchased two used, but nice Buicks, in the late 1970s-the idea being that driving a large, reliable car would be a more "safe" way to transport my wife and two young boys. Buick had a slogan they used for years--"When better cars are built, Buick will build them!"
I remember that Buick slogan as well as the later one: “Wouldn’t You Really Rather Have a Buick?” My uncle ALWAYS drove Buicks. The first I remember was his ‘54 Buick Super 2-Dr hardtop. White roof, cream yellow body.
The Invictas were surely the fastest Buicks in '59 and '60, having the 401ci engine but in the slightly smaller LeSabre bodies. Same strategy that had been used in the Century from '54 to '58, i.e. the Roadmaster engine in a Special body. I've read that once you get above 35 mph or so, the Dynaflow becomes more competitive performance-wise with comparable Hydramatic-equipped cars, although probably not for fuel economy. Wasn't old enough to drive my father's "plain" 1959 Electra, which was also ever-so-slightly shorter and lighter than the Electra 225, so I can't vouch for that from personal experience!

Great looking Buick. Thanks, Lou.
Hi Tom, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
Nice interior and roofline. Paint color is cool.
Thanks for sharing what you like and notice.
Hi LoveIsAll, Thanks for viewing and sharing what you notice. You're welcome, Lou
Ive always liked the cars with slanted head lights like that Biuck, Chryslers and Lincoln. I own a 1960 Lincoln.
Happy to read you have a fun car too.
Hi Stude289, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Fathers car and many more :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
That rear window appears to have a heavy tinted film applied. Saves on the sunburnt necks of the rear passengers I guess.
Those delta fins are the best in the business. Great color too

Hi Сергій, Happy to share this "Great car! Such a "gloomy face"" with you :-) Good news! Steve has more cars I will be sharing from his collection, so stay tuned, Lou
I never thought much of the big Buicks and others of the really large American made cars when I was young but as they and I have aged I have come to really appreciate the elegance and smooth power they offered. Beautiful!
Hi Melvin, Cars have an amazing way of looking better with age, Lou
According to the sales brochure, these were called simply a "4-door hardtop." The flattop moniker came later. This one is really great and especially in Lido Lavender. My uncle had a 1959 Buick LeSabre 4-door sedan. I think I have his 1958 license plate from it, when it was new. It has chrome pieces all around it. Lou, you need to sit inside the car when Steve starts it, to show the gas pedal start. You can do that when you show the 1960 convertible.
Hi Jonathan NC, Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Uncles car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou

Another beautiful Buick in a great color. Love the sweep of chrome from front to back. Thanks Lou!
Happy to share "Another beautiful Buick" with you :-) You're welcome Tom!
The kind Mr. Steve Plunkett.......my Uncle Gord James from London Ontario and I were just talking about Steve's kindness to my Uncle. THANKS and Merry Christmas Lou and Steve. PS: When I was a little tyke, my family had a blue 59 exactly like this car. My Mom (R I P) was a "lead foot" and I was amazed when she would punch it out on the highway. 4 barrel and passing gear....GO MOM GO. Thanks for the memory.
Hi Mike, Happy to read you're Uncle and Steve have nice memories :-) Merry Christmas. You're welcome, Lou

WOW! I love that color. And a flat top! People either love them or hate them. I love them, with that wrap around rear window. All that chrome and gingerbread, very cool What a beautiful car.. Like to see you cover that yellow '58 next to the '59.
Happy to read "I love them". Stay tuned, there is more coming from Steves collection :-)
Hi Steven, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Dads car :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
So these cars were 18 and 3/4 feet long ? 225 " ÷ 12 = 18.75 .
@
Yes, the overall length also became the model name. Simpler times.
Lou, you found yet another Gem. Thanks for posting this.
Happy to share this "Gem" with you :-) You're welcome Robert.
Fabulous Fifty Nine ! Love the big emblems !
NICE!

Thank you!
High praise :-) You're welcome ultraviolet tp!
Beautiful car! An old timer Buick mechanic told me that these had a lot of workmanship problems that got fixed by the 1960 models. I wouldn’t care! I would take this one in an instant. Factory Air too!
Hi Craig, Happy to read you enjoy this "Beautiful car!" :-) Thanks for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou

That backlight is amazing!
The cost to produce that bent glass must have been huge!
Thank you for viewing and sharing what details you enjoy.
Hi iswc27, Happy to share this "closer look at this rare gem!" for you :-) Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and you're welcome, Lou
My favorite year for Buick! That Flat Top 225 is my favorite version. I love the pointed slanted quad headlights on the front and has that ticked off look! And the same with the taillights. Great video Lou!
Hi Zach, Happy to read "My favorite year for Buick! That Flat Top 225 is my favorite version." :-) NICE! Lou

Wow! Another stunning car from Steve Plunkett's awesome collection! The color is perfect for a luxury car of this era. I just wished that this video was a bit longer, but I appreciate all of the work that you and your son did to bring us these great cars! Thank you, Lou!

When I was born my mom had a 59 Electra wagon until 64. I remember thinking that she owned the angriest car in the world, no joke, those headlights and grill were scary.
Thanks for featuring another one of my favorites Lou 👍😎✌️
Hi Pat, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Moms wagon :-) Thank you for viewing, sharing, and you're welcome, Lou
A lot of those cars back then had a mean look 😂
My grandfather had a 1960 Buick LeSabre in light green. I loved the looks, especially those "rocket" taillights!

Hi Brian, I agree, both the 1959 & 1960 are Winners :-) One of each, why not! Lou
I love how you find the most awesome vehicles to showcase 😃
Thank you Paul. I'm glad you're along for the ride.
In the 60s and 70s, when my Windsor GM employee Dad drove us across the border to Detroit, he'd always say to me, "Keep your eyes peeled for a "Deuce and a quarter".
NICE! I think Dad would love this one :-)
Hope to see the 60 ragtop featured here sometime! That gentleman has some fantastic cars!!!!
Hi Allen, Stay tuned, there is more coming from Steve's collection :-) Lou
Beautiful old Buick Lou God Bless.
Hi Leroy, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Blessings received. God bless you too, Lou
Stunning Car ❤
Happy to read you enjoy this "Stunning Car" :-)
One of my Grails...Thanks Steve and Lou
"One of my Grails..." High praise. You're welcome CJ Design.
High praise. You're welcome Michael!
Wow! Just Wow!
:-)
Fabulous collection, fabulous 225. I wonder if all the glass is tinted or added much later? Is the pillarless glass black as well?

In 1959 we were a GM family. Our car was a 55' Olds Rocket 88 2 door H/T.
Hi Nicky, Happy to read your family in 1959 was a GM Family, Lou
Wow!
:-)
Thank you, Lou for featuring this car! I've been reading several of the other comments and giving my thumbs up to them as well.
On another note of interest, the Salt Lake Tribune featured an article on the '59 Electra several years ago. I gave a copy of it to my older brother on his birthday, he being born in 1959 as well. He didn't seem to find much humor or amusement from it as I expected he would. He's not a Buick nut either, like I am. Perhaps you could do a video on Saabs, that's his craze!😂
Thanks again, Lou!👍
Hi Daniel, You're welcome and my pleasure sharing this Buick with you. Here are two SAAB's for your Brother, Lou ruclips.net/video/xckR0HGLk-c/видео.html & ruclips.net/video/0Tt_Pxr9XcU/видео.html
@loucostabile AWESOME! THANK YOU! 👌
Gotta admit that I like the '59 Buicks a little more than the '59 Cadillacs...
More "Space Age" looking, without trying too hard.
But the 1960 Cadillac... That's a different story. Those WERE road rockets and perfectly portrayed the Rocket Age very elegantly.
Hi Slick, Happy to read which car you prefer in 1959 :-) Here is that 1960 Cadillac for you to enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/g5JBxJa2bM0/видео.html

wow spectacular. i think for '59 i prefer the buick style to the cadillac...buick IMHO was actually the best engineered of the GM lines at the time, maybe include Pontiac too. in fact I believe that Buick engineered the foundational components for all the '59 makes...the roof, glass, cowl, and the doors. but there were some differences too...full frame, dynaflow, torque tube, maybe some suspension as well. this car is gorgeous
Hi Steve, Thank you for sharing which car you prefer. Lou
i guess they dont salt the roads up there? great to see these treasures, and i learned about the smaller fins on the 61s too !

Hi fob1xxl, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Folks car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge on the roof, Lou
I'll take it!!
NICE !
Beautiful.....I'd take a wagon in that color, equipped as shown.
I'd invent reasons to get groceries!

When you just don’t have enough Buicks very nice garage!
Can you have enough classic Buicks?
THIS car, in the 2 dr, along with the Invicta 2 dr, are my favorite cars of the fin era. Nothing else comes close for me. One clean concept from nose to tail. The 60 Buicks are ny close seconds.❤
Hi Edward, Happy to read this car is in the top two finned era cars for you :-) Lou
Great car, great color!
Hi Jim, Happy to read you enjoy this "Great" car and the color too :-) Lou
Hi Curbozer Boomer, Being popular with the ladies is nice :-) Lou
in the Paul Newman movie "Pocket Money" Lee Marvin drives a Buick just like your dads
I remember that Buick slogan as well as the later one: “Wouldn’t You Really Rather Have a Buick?”
My uncle ALWAYS drove Buicks.
Very nice 😊
Hi Michael, Happy to read "Very nice" :-) Lou
That's one Buick I'd REALLY rather have 😏
