Regarding your not copied quilt - I started quilting in 2010, never having been on RUclips, or Pinterest or any social media platform I thought I invented chain piecing, crumb quilting, square in a square, piano key borders and so on. It never even occurred to me there was such a thing as quilt patterns, or quilt shops, all my fabric came from Walmart as the Joanne's in our town closed years ago. Then one day, I went to the movies in the next town over and discovered a quilting store in the same shopping center as the movie theater - beautiful fabric, quilt patterns, and a quilt on display with a piano key border. When I mentioned to the clerk I was a beginner quilter, only 6 months experience, they recommended some RUclips videos and some simple patterns. Next I went to a quilt show and low and behold there were versions of MY quilts on display. The crazy quilt I had seen in an historical home, which had inspired my quilting journey, while being the only quilt I had seen at that point in my life was not the only quilt way early quilters and modern quilters made quilts. While shocked I wasn't inventing the things I thought I had, the discovery of quilt patterns was a joy! So anyone who thinks a pattern is being copied is making an assumption we're all current and cognizant of what every other designer/quilter is doing, and like who has that kinda time? The assumption should be that any similarities are a coincidence not a planned event.

Aw Chelsi ... sorry to hear about the cruel backlash over the pattern. Some people are just nasty. Good on you for handling it the way you did so quickly to appease them. Interestingly enough, most of my patterns are yours and the other maker's so I am familiar with all of them and I never gave it another thought when I saw Regal Pines the first time. I noted the differences and moved on and then caught the drama comments. People need to learn to be nicer.

There is room enough for everyone in a creative world. I was so sorry to hear about the drama. It’s not needed. I know how painful it is when people attack your creativity. Putting art in the world is about being vulnerable. Please know that there are people who love and support you. You are very gracious for making changes you had no obligation to do. That comes from love. Thank you for sharing your talents.

I can’t imagine how hard it is to design quilts, let alone make sure it isn’t like anyone else’s quilts! I am no longer on any social media (other than RUclips) because I got so tired of the mean! I know you can’t necessarily do that with your business. You are such beautiful people! I love your designs and fabric! Thank you for putting yourself out there in this way! You inspire me and this brings me so much happiness! I am positive I am not the only person who feels this way either! Sending you all my love!

Thank you for your channel, Sherry, Chelsey and Billy. I look forward to watching the video as each one is something I look forward to each episode or each week. I started watching Sherry just before the pandemic and now continue to watch or look forward to you talking about the trips you just took to California and hearing your stories of the family and each episode of quilts, ball games and recipes just sweet and simple.
Chelsie, the backlash sometimes people are just not happy no matter what and you make things simple and wonderful, don't look back at this stuff people sometimes don't have to enough to do other than try to destroy someone else. I simply would like to say thank you for doing this and know it is truly something you all seem to enjoy and also as a family and to me I raise my hands high with a high five, great job and a great big hug. Keep up the great work and to many more episodes of life's challenging of quilting and thank you for all your time and hard work.

Thank yo to all three of you for such a great forum and information-packed podcast! Love it so much. Dear Chelsie- I have always wondered how there isn’t more patterns and fabric lines that seem the same with as fast as these patterns and fabrics are created and come out. I do understand that they are created and go thru processing before they ever reach the public but how can anyone possibly see ,know and keep track of what everyone else is doing?🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️. That’s just well - insane. Girl- you are a very talented designer. Both of fabric and patterns- that anyone would even consider let alone say anything about you copying- you don’t even have that need- you have an amazing and creative mind. Your very talented and skilled. You are amazing and way to honorable, professional and trustworthy to ever even be considered that you would purposely do such a thing. I’m so sorry that people were nasty and ugly to you. That shows their character- not yours!!! Hold your head high sweetheart- you have this girl. Those that truly matter- know you and your character❤. Hugs and love girl.

It blows my mind how mean people have become, how can people be hateful when talking about quilts? Quilts have always been about love, warmth, giving something of ourselves to others. It's easy to criticize when you're not the one putting all the thought and work into a project. I also agree with the person who commented that how can anyone know every single pattern written so far, just like not copying music, it seems impossible to me. Love " A Quilting Life" and the hard working family that keeps designing fabrics and patterns that are just right for me!

Chelsi, your courage and sincerity in responding to the hurtful and presumptuous judgment about your quilt pattern is admirable. Your encouragement to other creative people to not let the horrible actions of others discourage their creativity was very insightful. My grandmother always said when referring to bullying behavior, "You get what you give, give your best and never let the worst behavior from other people change who you are and the choices you make." Prayers for your strength to not let this incident discourage you.

I think we see our lack of humanity on social media...but, we also see our full humanity on display...take the positives you get and set the negatives aside. Sounds like you are sincere and emotional about this issue and I have been quilting for over 15 years now...and from my perspective...most patterns are not "UNIQUE" as there are really only so many ways to cut fabrics and sew them together..most are similar at least to others...but, the fabrics are all different and I am sure this was tough for you. You are a class act!

My dad was an inventor, he filed for several Patton’s in his life and you’d be surprised how many people would be working on a similar concept or idea… I know of once he and another patten applicant got together to work on a project.
Also weeks ago I heard another designer (i forgot who) mention that when ever they put a new design out their biggest fear is that someone else did one similar… I know this happens with movies sometimes… “Driving Miss Daisy” and “A Trip to Bountiful “ came out at the same time actually both great movies with very similar themes… the world NEEDED both movies 😅
Keep creating! Quilt on.. Care but don’t care! In my work I use this survival technique also 😅😢

    Greetings Sherri, Chelsi and Billy,
I checked Merriam Webster and according to them
Chelsi’s pronunciation of autumnal is correct.
Promenade is correctly pronounced either way.😅and just for pun eether or eyether are also both correct.
Also I want to add I am enjoying all your podcasts and enjoy seeing more of Billy. I am actually on a pattern hiatus right now because I already have more patterns than the law allows, however, I will be buying Chelsi’s pattern as soon as it is available in her shop.
Several years ago I was a member of Beach Cities Quilt Guild, they are an awesome group of Quilters. I was in college at the time and they all very graciously filled out a rather lengthy questionnaire for me as part of my senior project which involved teaching women how to quilt to help them to connect with their own creativity. I went on to graduate in 2002 and moved away. I’m sure none of them would remember me
But I remember them and how generous and helpful they were to me. A few of them may remember the questionnaire. May God continue to bless you and your delightful family.

Billy, I have just completed the survey and do I feel dumb! First let me just say I am probably the most technically challenged and technically ignorant person you would ever meet. To cut myself a little slack here, I am in my 70’s and sometimes I feel like I not only come from a totally different era, but another planet! I did not know there were apps to just listen to pod casts, I thought they were all something you watched on RUclips! Could you perhaps touch on the subject of podcasts sometime? I never miss the episodes of A Quilting Life on RUclips and if there is another venue available where I can get more info, I need to check it out.
I love A Quilting Life, all of you are so warm and generous with your talent! God Bless.

Square dancing callers pronounce it promenade with a long a. Phonetically, the silent e on the end of the word, by rule, would make the vowel "say it's name" as A. Lol, first grade teacher for 38 years. It can be pronounced either way. As for thinking, masquerade was promenade, you made me laugh this morning. Thanks for that!😂

Chelsi, I saw that quilt behind you on the ladder and thought WHAT is this pattern?? I need to have it!! Continued listening and now I know it's not available, yet. It is a beautiful pattern. We should all be so lucky to be as talented as you are. I didn't realize this when I was younger, but I know now that criticism from one person to another says more about the person criticizing.. XOXOXO

I did the survey for you. So sorry you had the cruel backlash Chelsi, I love your patterns and will certainly purchase this one as well, to add to my collections. People need to remember to be more kind, would they really think you would copy anything, when you look at patterns on a web site, there are alway similar patterns. Nothing is unique we all have ideas that could have similar design ideas. Why comment and be nasty about it just move on. Chelsi you do a great job and you should be proud of what you have created........
Kindness to you and your Mum XXX

Chelsi, you handled this with class! I never once thought you copied someone else’s pattern. In fact, I purchased it from Fat Quarter shop. I can’t wait to see the changes you made to it and if an update is available for those of us who purchased the “original” Regal Pines!

Well, I have to say quickly, I'm a bawl baby anyway, so when Chelsi started tearing up about the quilt pattern story-I did, too. I'm not on any social media by choice & this is a reason right here as to why I don't need to be. I know it's not all bad, but good grief-there are so many issues with all of them!!
The quilts you show are always gorgeous, the talk is always so fun & the book sharing is, too 💗💗

    1. It’s been a while since I read Big Magic but I believe the creative unconscious is discussed in the book. Or it may have been in the podcast that was done to coincide with the book release. It was great. Chelsi I’m so sorry you had any backlash. I really think it’s amazing how much people can do with design and quilt blocks. I have lots of sketches and one day hope to get up enough nerve to put something out myself one day. As for Billy’s inquiry… I love the quilt too community and put up videos myself! I hope it stays and other social medias go back to the algorithms that send you things you are interested in and show you the creators you already liked!!

Hi Chelsie…not being mean, just want to give you a little input from a grandma who raised 6 kids…I think your mispronunciation is due to your reading so much from a young age. Hear me out! My oldest granddaughter was/is a voracious reader. She was at a 5th grade reading level by the 2nd grade. But!! Just because she could read the words to herself and went through TONS of literature…she never HEARD the words spoken, but also didn’t actually comprehend every word. She had to slow down, was given some extra help and was taught to look up pronunciations and meaning she didn’t comprehend. It helped her so much! So, don’t feel bad or embarrassed, it’s a good thing to learn! 🥰🫶Read on, baby!!!! 🎉
