I bought a 450D after watching your videos back when you posted your 450AT videos. I was a Tech and used the 450 to listen and get familiar with HF. A few months later, I passed to Gereral and was off to the races. After a few more months, I bought an IC7300. Still have the 450D and need to get it out of the closet and fire it up again. It is a great radio. Thanks for a good video, Eric. 73 from KN4VVY.
Like you, the FT-450 was my first radio from about 13 years ago. I bought it used. It was my only HF radio for better than 10 years. I talked all over the world on it. I had an Ameritron 600 watt amp hooked up to it and had a tube flash over which killed the transmit. I picked up a 7300 and the Yaesu has just been sitting. One day I will get it in for repair. It's too good of a radio to waste. Fantastic low priced radio in their day, and still a great radio. For the new ham on a budget, look at a used FT-450. It will serve you well as you learn and grow in the hobby. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I made some of my best contacts with that 450.
I downloaded the service manual for my Ft-450AT and if it ever need repair, that book has absolutely everything needed to keep that radio running forever!
I have one of these. I have the 2007 model where you can change the colors on the screen. It's been sitting for awhile since i got the 991A and FT-710. I need to hook it up someone time. Had alot of fun on this little radio. 73 KB9HGI
Had to sell mine too several years ago after both wife and I were laid off. Was my only HF rig. Looking to get back into the hobby and maybe getting another one. Always enjoyed your videos.
I certainly had fun at Field Day. A club member brought her IC-7300 for us to play with, and I think I made about 180 contacts with it on 40 on 80 metres. However, it was with an NVIS antenna that only got my signal out as far as California and Saskatchewan. 73 VE7NDE

Simi-Rando question. Is getting a used HTX-202 (provided one can also get a replacement for the internal battery) worth getting and if so at what price? I have memories of how satisfyingly hefty that thing was.
I have a BIGGER memory my friend.... THAT WAS THE VERY FIRST HAM RADIO I HAVE EVER OWNED.... THE VERY first contact I made was on THAT radio and to my Elmer which I got this radio...
@@HamRadioConcepts The school club loaned out a bunch to us. I briefly got a second hand baofeng to see what conditions were like here and, while not amazing. I wonder how much of that is the baofeng being chineesium, how much was cheap duckie, and how much is just location. Maybe i'm just buying into nostalgia but i remember that thing being fairly solid.
Hello, I just got my Technician's license about a month ago and was wondering what mobile or HAM shack radio is good for someone just starting out? I'd like to have one in the house and one in the truck. I currently have a Baofeng GT-5R but live in a residential area, and can hit a few repeaters, but I don't hear much traffic on the ones I programmed using Chirp. Any advice or recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.
I know this is a very late reply, but I thought I would pop an answer in here for anyone else reading. Firstly, learn the calling frequencies of the country you are in and call on them. Secondly, repeaters are funny beasts. I can try one down the road and no one ever uses it. Conversely there is one I never dreamed I would be able to reach that I stumbled on, about 30 miles away, that I can just about use with a handheld ( I have a lot of radios dating back to the 1970s but I still like to experiment) Thirdly, make a "flowerpot" antenna for 2M and 70cms. And that is basically it, after that you should be doing a sort of rinse and repeat, trying your antenna out in different locations, calling on the calling frequencies at various times, and trying to seek out repeaters.
Still have my original FT-450D and it’s still in use today. I’ve made thousands of contacts with it from 6m to 160m…

That's cool you got it back after all this time.

I remember when all you had was the Yaesu FT-450 for HF. Eric, you were the first Ham radio related RUclips channel I subscribed to back in 2015.
Glad to see it back when I first started watching your videos that's what you were using

I still remember that video - wondered what ever happened to this radio.

Great story... and a happy ending too 🙂
I have the 450D version of this radio and still use it today.
Hi Erick, I bet you the TS940 had the typical Power supply failure. Those are famous for that. The 28v line fails frying the rest. So the 930s
Great radio's.
I still use my FT450AT....
Because its all i have...😂

How did you record your beacon contacts?
