Morning Kevin hope your feeling much better now mate, brilliant video as all ways,, hopeing to be down that way in a few months time I be operating from Wickford Essex and hopeing to visit the packing shed when I am down thar,, take care of yourself stay safe mate.
Thanks John, I am feeling better but can’t shake off the cough, it will take a few weeks to disappear. Let me know if you’re over this way, and check out the open days at the Packing Shed on our website👍 www.packing-shed.org.uk/visting-the-shed
Great video. I've got the FT-2980 and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Their new 80w offering on 2m just doesn't have the same robustness. Too many frills and bells and wistles. Well done
Weird with the 4m G0JBA station hearing you then not hearing. Did you find out whether the Anytone was faulty? Or maybe condx had just changed. There's a bit of activity around here on 4m but not much. I built a 4m dipole out of some radials from an old colinear - works a treat. Good to see another video and glad to hear you're over COVID now. See you soon.
Thanks Michael, I checked the radio yesterday and it’s putting out around 18w into a dummy load and with good audio received on a 4m handheld so it’s a bit of a mystery. I hope you and Jackie are well and had a good Christmas, I’ve still got a cough but putting a brave face on it😉
Nice to see you having a practice with your gear ready for the 145 Alive its not far away (3 weeks) . I have a 2800M they are good strong radios as you say with not too many functions . Keep an eye out for the Net frequencies soon enoough!!! John M0XJA
Thanks John, I should be all set for 145 Alive. I had 12m of Messi and Paoloni Hyperflex 10 coax arrive yesterday so not so lossy as the RG58. Just hoping for light winds so I can get the Slim Jim up a bit higher 🤞
Nice little Yaesu that. Is that the one with the data port on the back too? I use a Slim G with my FT65 for 2m which works well. Happy 2025 Kevan de EI3LH (Formerly EI6JHB)
Thanks Ian, it’s the first time I’ve made and used a slim Jim but I think it worked pretty well. Just need to invest in some decent coax and get it up a bit higher👍
The way I see it, if I can’t drive off because my aerial is attached to a fence I am portable. If I can drive because my aerial is attached to the roof of the car I am mobile. Hence why I was initially signing as /portable on 2m and 4m but when I switched to the MFJ whip on the roof I signed as /mobile.
Excellent radio FT-2980. I've owned x2 of them
Thanks for watching, I’m pleased with it👍
Happy New Year, I'm going to have to give portable ago this year, after watching your videos, I don't live that far from your area!
Thanks Timothy, you should get out portable. I am 100% portable or mobile and love getting out and about, and away from urban noise👍
Hello Kevin - nice setup. Looks a bit on the chilly side 🥶☃❄❄
All the best for 2025.

Wonderful video as always, Kevin.
Thanks😊
Morning Kevan , great to see you qsy right away …doesn’t happen here , people call on the calling frequency and stay there…. Well done
Thanks AJ. The 2m calling frequency is pretty quiet round here but I still QSY pretty quickly, I don’t want to be that person😉
Happy New Year Kevin
Cheers Tony, happy new year to you too👍

Happy New Year.
Thanks David, happy new year to you too👍

Thanks, I like the simplicity of the radio. It does what a I need it to do, and no noisy fan. Thanks for watching👍
@2e0wmghamradioandkayaking85 It works great as a dedicated 2m packet mail or APRS rig as well

You know that any ft2980 you buy new are knockoff right.
That’s not portable, that’s mobile!

It has to be mobile first .it can't walk.
