This was a VERY Famous song of his. I grew up listening to this song. It got a lot a radio play in the 70s. Neil Young was an enourmous influence to many musicians.

Do you self a favor and listen to as many songs from him as you can!! His songs tell great stories.. Neil is Amazing, great song writer. He music is one of a kind. I've been listening to him since I was a little kid growing up in the sixties. It doesn't get any better than this..

He is considered the Godfather of grunge two decades before grunge was actually a thing. His work with bands like Crazy Horse, Buffalo Springfield and then Crosby Stills Nash and Young (CSN&Y) are also ones to check out.
The 60s and 70s were AMAZINGLY volitile times. People tend to think there are major things going on now, but honestly it was way worse back then. (24 hr news makes things seem bad now)
So many young artist were really contemplating life, death, and really heavy topics at very young ages. Neil Young was 27 when this was released... so he was probably 26 shen he wrote this deep song. Artist like Young, Bowie, etc wrote shockingly deep lyrics and beautiful tunes at young ages because people were concerned at a young age. American kids graduating when this song came out knew kids in HS that were already drafted, dead, and buried.

When it comes to traditional roots-rock and old-fashioned, rustic music, Neil Young is #1 for me.
I saw Neil live in 1997 in upstate NY. He did a show that lasted over 3 hours. Funny thing is, he only did about 12 songs. He had solos where he got lost in the sauce (we all did) for 15-20 minutes each song. Along with Plant and Page, John Mellancamp, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Perer Gabriel, John Fogerty (CCR), Jackson Browne, Cranberries, Cheap Trick, and Dr. Dirty,(John Valpy) it was a fun 2 years of concerts in that area.
As a Canadian Millie he is by far one of our best artists of all time by far out of Canada !!

People really don't see I guess that this is kind of like the grandfather of grunge music that my generation in America. Generation X brought back organic music in the 90s after the 80s were so electronic. Neil Young, Bob Dylan and more inspired a lot of artist in the 90s and after
I have seen Neil Young 12 times in concert, he is Touring with Crazy Horse now in the States (but just not mine). You were right about him influencing younger artists, he was known as the "Godfather of Grunge" among other things. Lots of material here of many styles and genre's.

I love this intimate performance with just Neil, his guitar & harmonica. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years.

he has been inspirational.. he is called the Godfather of grunge for a reason. He is an idol of many younger artist like Eddie Vedder as an example. Song like this one or «Old man» from the same show is his sweet side, but he's a rocker too.. look at his song «Rockin in the free world» at the MTV playing along side with Pearl Jam... that is something!
If it's raining and you're in one of those melancholic moods, try his songs "The Needle and the Damage Done" or "Don't Let it Bring You Down." Try his albums "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere," "After the Gold Rush," or "Harvest." He was also part of a couple of bands you may want to review, Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

I used to walk past a record shop as a teenager (I'm now 70 years old) and listened to Heart of Gold, which could be heard all the way down the street. That was electrifying for me. I immediately went into the record shop and bought the LP Harvest, which had this song on it. That's how I became a Neil Young fan. Later I was a solo musician and in two bands as a guitarist and singer and we covered a lot of Neil Young. I have a lot in common with this song. I was very lonely for over ten years and was looking for a girlfriend and longed for a heart of gold. Even today, as an old man, I still listen to the Harvest LP. The songs on it have never left me.

This was live on the BBC London. The album :Neil Young Harvest". His acoustic guitar and harmonica inspired a generation and still does. You should watch "Needle And The Damage Done".

On your observation that lyrics from years back like in this era (the early seventies) featured more variety in subject matter, whereas today's popular music has a very limited (and honestly very shallow) range of topics that they sing about, that reflects a societal decline, part of which is that people don't read books anymore at all and are less well informed about the range of human experience and the range of human emotions (though they think they're better informed than any people in history). During the period of this song, too, there was a serious awareness that money and status aren't everything, and may not even be a thing at all, whereas today that is unthinkable to just about everybody.

This is a song where the studio version is better in my opinion. There is a female harmony that's added at the end and it really completes it. In the live version, I always miss it.

Pleased you mentioned about contemporary loss of variety of topic and originality of approach . Mind you a lot of 60's music was also boy/girl heartache and as formulaic as Taylor Swift.( no better or worse than many ) Nothing changes, but every era has a more than a few gems which are later remembered. It takes God-given genius to be both a one-off original artist AND a crowd-pleaser- from the 60's-70's I can think only of such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen- and even such can manage it only for parts of their career and turn out a lot of filler also. I assume that there are plenty of 'singer-songwriters' about, even some on RUclips, but not sure where their memorable songs are?

This is from the album Harvest as is the song Old Man that several people reference below. Harvest id probably his most popular album, but IMHO not even close to his best. If you want to hear melancholy listen to the albums Time Fades Away (this is a live album), On the Beach or Tonight's the Night. Then the albums Everybody Knows this is Nowhere and Zuma. Cortex the Killer on Suma is one if his best epic songs. IMHO if you only know the Harvest album you really don't know Neil.
Listen "Cinnamon Girl" and you'll get bit different side of him, or his work with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Yes - Neil Young is iconic, and you're 100% spot on - he influenced countless other artists. One such band is Pearl Jam. They performed together in 1993 on an unforgettable rendition of Neil's song Keep on Rockin' in the Free World. You'd love it. A totally different side of Mr. Young! Neil Young is a legend and this was his biggest hit. He did acoustic and electric and I think he inspired a lot of the Grunge bands and I think he was sometimes called the Godfather of Grunge if I am not mistaken. Neil's live album Live Rust is an excellent example of his versatility.

@@DENVEROUTDOORMAN I didn’t say it was his best. I said biggest hit. I didn’t check the charts but I think it’s probably his best known song from my perspective. I agree Southern Man, Cinnamon Girl, Like a Hurricane, Down by the River and many others were more rock than Heart of Gold. I could be wrong, but I would have expected Heart of Gold to have gone higher on the charts than other songs. Maybe My My Hey Hey or Hey Hey My My might have charted higher. That is what I meant by “biggest hit”, basically chart position, not personal favorite.
