Thank you! Ginger is an entirely different thing, very dominating in flavor, not a good substitute for Tom Kai Gai. Galangal is so subtle one might not know why the soup isn't right, just that something crucial is missing, but it is hard to find for many of us.
I used this particular Tom Ka Gai Recipe at least 80 times in the last 5 years and everyone who ever ate my Tom Ka Gai got hooked. My husband requested me to cook this one every time he wants to show me off as a good chef. lol Thank you for the best recipe, ever!!!

Thank you. I love Tom Kha Gah. My favorite soup at your father’s place. I appreciate your explaining alternative ingredients as some more traditional ingredients may be more difficult to come by. As someone else stated it would be helpful to have a list of ingredients. Jazakallah Khair
The best Tom Kha Gai I've ever had was at a school I worked at in Pathumtani. Highly recommend adding tomatoes, which give the broth a boosted flavor profile. The tanginess of the lime and the creaminess of the coconut milk definitely compliment an added tomato flavor. Also, it is more common in western countries to use chicken breast in soups but in Thailand, chicken thighs are typically cheaper and dark meat adds a little more flavor.
I made it last night and I was AMAZED that *I* made something sooo good. Thank you SO MUCH for this recipe. I’ve wanted to make Tom Kha for years, and after a big expensive grocery trip and a failed soup, I gave up a long time ago. I thought I’d have to beg a restaurant to let me stand in the corner of a kitchen, lol. Thank you thank you!
This was fantastic! 25 minutes from start to finish and I had tom kha that tasted just like my favorite Thai restaurant in California. Thank you so much. I will definitely be using many of your other videos!
I really love how you spoke in both English and Thai! I'm learning the Thai language (as well as the food recipes) and I can't wait to see all of your other videos! ขอบคุฌค่ะ
Thank You! For great explanation in your beautiful Tai language and English... I'm an Irish girl that makes this broth for years.. I make variations of it. I've used lemon grass.. They also sell it in the refrigerator isle in grocery stores next to basil, cilantro in tubes near the lettuce my friends.. If ya don't have all the ingredients.. Its okay. Keep trying. Coconut milk in a can is definitely needed.
Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. I went to my local Asian store and found the galanga and everything that I needed, including the Kiffir leaves. They are hard to find, so I purchased two packets and will keep them in my freezer. I don't eat meat, so I used a vegetable base for the stock, and tiger shrimp and fresh Chilean sea bass in place of the chicken. I put the fish in towards the end of the cooking time so that the fish wouldn't disintegrate and the shrimp at the end of cooking time so they wouldn't turn to rubber. I also use palm sugar instead of white or brown sugar. It was awesome!
Thank you Rin! I have made this recipe for years and and it is so good! Thank you for sharing one of the best soups in the world. Tom Kha Gai was the gateway for me to thai food! I remember the first time I had it and how much I loved the perfect balance of tart, creamy, savory and sweet. I am making this soup tonight for a potluck!
This recipe is amazing , precise in taste and super delicious. It took me all the back to Singapore where I’ve had it first time in Thai restaurant. I have made it twice in four days and in the second time I replaced sugar with a tea spoon of white honey, the taste was awesome. Thank you so much for transferring the authenticity of such soup to the world.
still my go-to tom kha recipe!! way better than most restaurants especially since I can tailor the sweet/sour balance to me! I've probably made it at least 20 times and its been so delicious every time!! This is my favorite thai dish and it often disappoints at restaurants so it was amazing to find this recipe!! Highly recommend and I'm so picky with recipes
You’re amazing thank you I love how you included both languages without leaving anyone lingering waiting for it to change back to their language. You did a beautiful video thank you
I worked at as a dishwasher when I was 18 at a Thai Restaurant and the one dish I cannot forget is the Tom Kha Khai the owner use to make. I been trying to duplicate it through the years ... I will try this recipe and use dairy milk..as that was what he used way back then. thanks for the video :)
Thanks❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I’ve been trying to find this “Thai soup “ I had as a child that I couldn’t get enough of. This is the best curry on the planet. And you have helped me perfectly recreate it. Thank you so much. I was able to make it on my mothers birthdays (my adopted mother who passed years and years ago). It was a very emotional meal but know that you have a place in my heart thank you. I’m so so thankful. ❤️ I didn’t think I’d be able to ever again taste this incredible FLAVOR. My goodness. I was going to just follow a written recipe that i found; however, after hearing your native speech, I KNEW you were the better choice. I didn’t measure anything, NOTHING. WHICH IS CRAZY FOR ME. Just used my understanding and heart. And it was phenomenal. I LOVE YOU HUMAN. ❤️❤️ And thank you so very very very very much. Seriously.
I tried it and damn it was good! But I used 4 tablespoons of fish sauce and brown sugar and I put the lime juice in before serving. I think this is better for the taste. Thanks
I made this tonight and wowsers. However I added cilantro to the bowl instead of the pot to avoid the spinachy flavor and texture. Added lime last as you did. Saved some green onion for last too, and some chili oil I made from some thai chilis. I'm really glad I followed your recipe because this is better than the local thai place imho. I didn't have kaffir leaves, the korean market only had one package and it was spoiled. They gave them to me for free, but I didn't use them. I added a little lime zest to try to make up for it. I also added a half cup of water twice throughout. So one cup.
Since 10+ years belongs Tom Kha Gai to my regular recipes, mainly in the winter I cook it every 2nd week. I never get tired of this explosion of flavours.
This recipe is far better than any others I've been watching in my search for the tastiest version I can finally make at home. Thanks! After a few solo attempts following this recipe I will definitely venture off the path and begin experimenting with variations of proteins to expand the possibilities!

Love this recipe. Thank you !! I followed it few times and I am getting good at it. I substituted chicken with veggies like sliced (blanched) carrots, cabbage, tofu, mushrooms etc. We added some salt to taste instead of fish sauce.
Let me ask you, she said that eating the keffir lime leaves and golangol, (and maybe the lemongrass) could be tough to chew but I didn’t see her remove it from the broth before adding the chicken. How did yours come out. Did you slice the golangol really thin? Maybe then it could be eaten easier
