I will never understand how writers and editors can possibly ignore the literal DECADES of backlash to their terrible Spider-Man stories. You'd think if they wanted successful comics they'd listen to what the fans want: character growth

We are still feeling the effects of the Raimi Spider-Man having organic webs, them putting it in the comics, and people coming in and becoming fans of Spider-Man comics during that time. I appreciate that this was posed as a question in the title, and that the idea of "game of telephone" was explained because I truly believe discussions about brand synergy do factor into editorial decisions, but that even then, they don't expect a 1 to 1 translation of the MCU to the comic depiction.
Star-Lord is an example of "Well, hardly anyone that isn't part of the niche Guardians fandom knows his characterization and personality, so let's relaunch him with a bit more Pratt-isms."*

  • @stevenreyes7779

Best part is, at the end of every, AND I MEAN EVERY, Spiderman issue has a section where the fans get to write in; there are fans who ask for why there’s such a dip in quality since one more day or why haven’t they fixed it since no fan likes it Marvel says the same exact thing: we hear but that was a long time ago. Like they cannot be this blind and dumb.

  • @doorsfan173
    @doorsfan173 26 дней назад +9

In the context of the video, regarding the Ms Marvel stuff, that synergy didn't ruin Spider-Man. It was a bad story, but the broader ZW run just isn't good independent of that. In some ways, more broadly, the synergy strategy is hurting Spider-Man well beyond that. We saw how the FF and X-Men were back-benched (in terms of their significance for the broader comics) and other properties like the Inhumans were used to supplant X-Men. This was when they were held by 20th Century Fox, before Disney bought them out. Then, as that deal comes into the works and acquisition is finalized, we get this amazing relaunch spearheaded by Hickman, an absolute titan of a comic writer (I guess this is where I put on my tinfoil hat lol). I don't think that's a coincidence.
Spidey's in a weird spot where they share the licensing with Sony to get him in the MCU, and he's one of their biggest sellers in comics. He's basically Marvel's mascot, so they won't back-bench him as hard as they did X-Men or FF, but where Sony would get first dibs on rights to any major events primarily starring Spider-Man, it's clear they don't really feature him as heavily in the main universe's events. I think it's also part of why they keep him in such a hard stasis as a character and upend any attempts at growth (see the end of Spencer's run). He keeps being forced back to, basically, the Brand New Day status quo: broke and alone Peter Parker.

  • @AnomalyINC
    @AnomalyINC 25 дней назад +7

My thoughts on this are...jaded, I guess. But I'll number them, because I want to keep track of what I'm writing here.
    1. Spider-Man has been ruined since he made a deal with Mephisto. And he will continue to be ruined until it is properly and thoroughly addressed. Kindred was just a big tease in the end.
    2. I have encountered more people calling Miss Marvel a fan-favourite than actual fans of Miss Marvel. I don't think she is anywhere near as popular as Marvel likes to pretend she is.
    3. A bad story is a bad story any day of the week, not just on "Let's pretend corporations care about a specific minority"-day.
    4. Marvel always pulls this stuff, starting a story in one series and continuing it in another. They think it'll get them more readers. It doesn't seem to occur to them to make good stories instead.
    5. "Film synergy" is not exclusive to Marvel, DC does this too, but Marvel is particularly egregious. Likely due to having had higher quality films to begin with. Had. Just like the movies, the comics have worn out their welcome. What used to be endearing is now just frustrating, because they are afraid of deviating from a historically successful formula.
    6. Twitter tirades are a staple of social media. On one hand, it has been disheartening to see these people whom I used to appreciate, even admire, be absolute raving lunatics with delusions of grandeur. On the other hand, it is something that I am thankful to know, as it has incentivised me to be more selective in whom I support financially. (Almost no-one. The industry's rotten to the core.)
    7. Agendas, oh boy. Yeah, yes, I'm with Benny on this one. We know they're there, we know why, and we know that a lot of people make a bigger deal out of it than it ought to be, and others deny them wholesale, depending on whether they agree with said agendas or if they think it will line their pockets.
If it is well written, then it is well written, regardless of agenda, real or imagined. The least Marvel could do is wrap their messaging in some appealing narratives, but they can't be bothered to do even that.
    8. I don't know what Cinemacon is, and I am most definitely not a normal person, as this stupid comment on a RUclips video can attest.
    9. The hype ain't coming back.
    10. I used to like Marvel Comics. Quite a bit. I thought DC was boring, and their attempts at catching up with Marvel Studios were equal parts hilarious and tragic. But as far as compelling stories go, DC is better at it right now. Maybe because they don't have to play second fiddle to a cinematic universe, trying desperately to catch any increasingly underwhelming hypewave when the next bland movie comes out.
But it ain't over until it's over. The worse something gets, the more opportunities for improvement present themselves. Can Marvel win back the hearts and minds of people like me?
No. But it'll be funny watching them try.
If you read all this, whoever you are, know that you didn't have to. But I needed to write it all the same, to achieve some form of catharsis.
    It worked.

The MCU has nothing to do with the current run in Amazing Spider-Man by F@#$ing Zeb Wells. I loved the MCU since I watched the first Iron Man film, and I don't care what the haters say.
Also, I'm cool with Ms. Marvel as a mutant in the MCU because we're heading to the Mutant Saga in Phase 7 after Secret Wars. Plus, I can't get enough of watching X-Men 97 because the show is both Uncanny and Astonishing. I'm trying to collect and read all of Marvel Comics because I've learned so much about the past events that happened in the 616 continuity(War of the Realms, Empyre, King in Black, Devil's Reign, AXE Judgement Day, Dark Web and Ultimate Invasion).
You're right about one thing, Benny. Marvel Studios is doing Damage Control because they're going back to basics by doing one movie a year while they're focusing on producing and filming the projects for Phase 5 and Phase 6.
But even this won't stop me from reading all of Marvel Comics. I'm a comic nerd because I enjoy learning everything there is to know on the Marvel Universe.

Yeah, but they made those exact same denials during that weird X-Men thing. From what I recall, that was a Perlmutter thing, though. But it was still pretty entertaining. NO X-merch. Really pushing the Inhumans as a replacement for "source of random superpowers" while it looked like the MCU was going to make a thing of them. Putting Inhumans and Defenders on a bunch of merch (my favorite was a Secret Wars t-shirt I saw where the characters that weren't in the movies/Netflix shows had been edited out and replaced with characters that were). There were "reports from Marvel staffers" that the X-Men in particular were getting sort of unofficially put on the back burner. And all along you had Brevoort on twitter insisting that they weren't doing what they very clearly were doing. And while they realized they couldn't make people care about Karnak and eventually knocked it off, we did get Ms. Marvel out of it, and she's one of my favorite characters now, so... all's well that ends well?

Even if this call never happened we’ve seen other things happen. Also not a fan of her being a mutant now. It will bring so much baggage onto her from the X-men being shit on so much. It will make her down to earth hero fighting much harder to do in story. =/

Edit: really just do better with Peter’s character growth and let the Paul character quietly go away.

I’ve been saying this for years.
They didn’t own the rights directly to Spider-Man and they were trying to make Iron Man Their poster child so they would Nerf the crap at a Spider-Man and wreck His comics or TV shows to make him look less than Iron Man so kids would like Iron Man more.
Just watch the cartoon Spider-Man Iron Man and Hulk
And tell me Spider-Man isn’t tremendously Nerfed in that
Now the same thing is continuing to happen because they’re actively trying to make Miles Morales more appealing to kids than Spider-Man
    Just Play marvels Spider-Man 2.
Spider-Man is horribly nerfed in that too.
Whether it’s Iron Man or Miles Morales Spider-Man seems to always get the crap kicked out of him because they’re trying to replace him with someone else
It’s like Marvel is upset that Spider-Man is their most popular character .
And if some miles fanboy comes in shouting at me, my point will be made.
Here’s a message to the inevitable comments I’ll receive
    They got you.

I feel like the biggest problem with Spiderman is they try to dim his growth for the sake of sixties nostalgia which isn't working. Spiderman hasn't been a neighborhood character for years it was growth his villains grew from street thugs to city threats to taking over the country to world threats and Spider-Man fit. Until they tried to stuff him back down but none of that works. None of it. So let him be the man he grows to be and not a little kid in over his head we already saw that. Spiderman has done that that was homecoming. Far from home wasn't even an avenger level threat it was hype and city wide destruction which is an average Spiderman villain. Just not in New York. No way home was basically a low level sinister six but y'all keep talking about how it's not the friendly neighborhood Spiderman when that hasn't existed since the time they fought the beyonder that was the eighties. The problem is that since the comics don't let Peter fully grow we want the same in his movies which o thought we should want more. He's more than just street thugs. But there should always be acknowledgement that Peter will stop what he's doing to handle a street level thug just like he would for a city or world wide threat. That's Spiderman. Not some always down blue collar miserable sap. That's not supposed to be Spiderman that's someone's poor idea of a blue collar man who can never see the brighter side of life or make it. That's pessimistic bullshit

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 ruined Spider-Man for synergy. Every problem that's in Spidey comics nowadays is from the younger gen hyping that movie up into oblivion (I love Spider-Man 2 but it's astronomically overrated). It takes the No More story and reduces it to what we see now, annoying supporting charcaters, Peter suffering, villain motivations that make no sense
