Do you need to own WC3 reforged?
I would love to play this, but no way am I giving blizzard any more money.
Custom units look pretty sweet, I still think Reforged graphics look weird but the orc Grunts here don't look as uncanny as blizzards at least!

I think you need to keep playing :). I thought the first missions were kind of bland, but the quality really ramps up after that. The missions for Stromgarde and Tyr's Hand particularly stand out in my opinion.
The WarCraft franchise is perhaps one of the most influential game franchise to me- I first played the WarCraft Orcs & Humans demo that we got from a Babbages back in the early/mid-90's... I was hooked. Absolutely going to be digging into this, thank you for sharing!
I like how they included the Scratcher and the Scriber. They are you in the original Warcraft 2, the dudes that chronicled everything that happened.
Age of Mythology had land, air and water units and it was one of my favorite RTS games back in the day. I also played a lot of Command and Conquer: Generals - Zero Hour, but I don t think that one had much water combat if I remember rightly.

I just want the original with a bigger selection box and AoE healing and bloodlust pretty much, maybe a bit higher res. But this looks well done
All they needed to do was add the original Bloodlust sound from Warcraft II. But still, good work can’t complain too much, but they should have used the original Peon voices too. Axethrowers look puny and should be bigger like they were on war2. Troll destroyer ship’s voice acting is questionable “done build-e ship” sounds weird.
Yeah, autocast bloodlust / healing ... and better pathfinding. Maybe better fire effects on buildings... but WC2 graphics and gameplay are timeless to me, this just feels like a different game altogether.
@@Fastwinstondoom Auto cast on healing only, as Bloodlust is over powered anyway. The auto healing still wouldn’t balance it but at least it would make it a bit more even in multiplayer matches.
We won't get that bro. Both Warcrafts 1-2 are ancient history so no one really cares of recreating it.
There are still people, like DannyId, that makes some mods for original War2 if you are interested. I wish someone would remake that game with a modern technology and improvements, but it's unlikely to happen... we are probably last people that would like to see it :D
@@Olagfigh it happened for Games such as Command & Conquer, Red Alert and Age Of Empires. Now that Microsoft Own Blizz/Acti then it could easily happen. Heres to hoping anyway.

Thanks for the vid, Zakh. I understand a lot of people are disappointed that its pretty much a War3 mod, but it was still an enjoyable video as always. A lot of people are pissed at Blizzard (rightfully so) and would love to see them make a true remaster of this game. But tha has no bearing on your channel whatsoever. You always make great content and it's very much appreciated.

I don't know about a playthrough but it is higher up on my list of games to play.

I can’t get the assets to load no matter what I do - still missing loads of textures
How many times have you tried uninstalling the assets, reinstalling them, then restarting your PC? Also try alternate restarting and rebooting.
Old is always GOLD! I still prefer WC II than III
Good to see someone putting Reforged to use. DesignerDave talked about them originally having plans to recreate WC1 in Reforged before Kotick basically destroyed the whole project and we ended up with the mess of a game that we got. WC1 is almost unplayable to me these days, a modern recreation would have been nice. As for this, it looks pretty cool...hopefully they'll keep polishing it abit, definitely interested in the end product.
Yeah WC1 isn't good, I tried playing it but it's just too finnicky and messy. WC2 holds up okay but the first game is just not fun.

@@Hijfblog Haha it totally is and the rest of the series wouldn't exist without it, but it's one of those games where if you didn't play it when it was new it just doesn't feel fun today. I quit on mission 3 because I just couldn't get my units across a bridge. Telling them to cross just sent them all to random corners of the map.

It's super nice, the sound and everything is just like then :D BUT... if the installation is so painful, I'm not sure it's worth it especially since I would also have to purchase WC 3 reforged.
And I read Reforged still has issues. Maybe in a year if Microsoft is willing to invest into fixing it.
This is their ploy to get people to buy Reforged, some updates etc. and they can continue making money off War2/3 still.

Also warcraft 2 did not have wolf riders unlike the first game. 3 nerfed wolf riders by making them a seige unit.
I wouldn't call it a Remaster but a Reimagining, since its much more WC3 than WC2. But the term "Remaster" is used pretty much for anything that is some sort of re-release...
That's why I don't call it a remaster, this generally would be considered a remake, which is when everything is built from the ground up and not following the original 1 to 1.
It's in a funny place. They've taken each mission and almost slavishly followed the original mission objectives and map design, but then spliced it with a Warcraft 3 mission & quest design philosphy. I also love how they remade the original cutscenes and incorporated them into the story in a very neat way.

Not just the steps described, are you shutting down and booting up or are you pressing 'restart'? And how many times? Like 3? or 23?
Done about 12 times now. A mixture of rebooting and restarting. Have also run the installer in admin mode and deleted and reinstalled multiple times. The character models just keep displaying as grey and red with no other colours or features - very frustrating. Everything else loads in perfectly
@@Fastwunz Okay at that point you should try contact the devs and ask on the mod pages. It's either something is going wrong on your side or something is blocking the assets from being installed. Could be you have an antivirus software blocking it. Or your Windows Defender settings are too high and it's not allowing mod files to be installed. Could be a bug with the asset installer or all kinds of things. It's not something that can be figured out in RUclips comments with me who had the assets work on the 3rd install.

That is remaking Warcraft 2 yes. Like how Blizz wanted to remake the old Warcraft games in Reforged themselves before the project was scrapped.

less of a remake and more of a reimagining since it's not a 1:1 conversion of maps nd units, though they do get it mostly right, there are some pretty major differences made in order to fit with the current timeline as dictated by wow.
The definition of 'remake' is shifting. The new FF7 game is considered a 'remake' even though not only are characters, gameplay mechanics, and pretty much everything is different, even the story is being changed. If that's a remake, then 1:1 conversion isn't a requirement for being a remake.
I'll never buy reforged, Blizzard doesn't deserve it

@@Cenot4ph Yes but there's a lot of games where the original team is long gone and things pick back up. For example Pharaoh, the Caesar 3 team had almost all left to found Firefly Studios, so Pharaoh/Zeus/Emperor were made by completely different people and aren't the same 'Impressions Games'. With Bobby Kotick gone, most people see Blizzard currently at the beginning of a new existence because all the people linked to the controversies are gone now too. None of the ABK damage is associated with Microsoft at the moment. It's only been 2 weeks though, so really we can't judge how things have changed yet.

@@Cenot4ph A new culture and management is what Microsoft says they wanna implement. Whether they do it well or not can only be guessed. And yeah, lots of people were fired from ActiBlizz for misconduct, there's a reason they had to rename Mcree to Cassidy in Overwatch, but Bobby couldn't be fired so he just sat there and paid out to settle the lawsuits.

They have those too. They gave each Orcish clan somewhat different units, it's pretty cool. Blackrock Clan gets the old grunt/axethrower/ogre combo.

Honestly, I prefer Warcraft I over the others based on the troops being 100% human or orce. 2 was a better game overall no doubt. 3 introduced RPG elements which I did not care for.
I wish I could get into Warcraft 1 but when I tried I got stuck trying to get 4 units across a bridge and then gave up haha.

isn't the orc campaign not canon? I prefer the human campaign for the story. the orc campaign doesn't become canon until beyond the dark portal in which case both sides are canon.
I can't remember what story details are canon or not, but my understanding is that a lot here takes into account newer information like from the movie, so the story here isn't exactly the same as the original WC2 Orc campaign. Having said that, I'm no expert, so you would know better than I about whether this campaign is fully canon or not.

A shame it uses the Reforged visuals since it means you can't play it with an old copy of warcraft3 without buying the downgrade, compared to The Heart of storms, an equally impressive overhaul (also with complicated installation) who runs on pre-Reforged (and looks better IMO).
To be fair there are already several other custom campaigns who do the same "war2 into war3" deal, so I understand wanting to glam it up, and it is an impressive scope presentation-wise.

Yeah so the guideline is you check volume. Over 12,000 people have downloaded the Asset Installer and this project has been covered by numerous outlets. No one has said anything about any maliciousness.
@@GamerZakh So the guideline is you check words. "sounds" does not equal "definitely are". No one has written that they ARE dodgy, only that they SOUND (seem) dodgy. Those are not the exact same.
At what point is it normal practice in 2024 to have to reinstall art assets and reboot multiple times to get them to work?
It has a kinda similar vibe to how way back you often had to temporarily disable your anti-virus software in order to install mods. Sure it was perfectly safe, but it still sounded really dodgy.
@@poilboiler I never said "definitely are", so I'm not sure what you're replying to with what I said. Doing anything on the Internet has risk. The Pharaoh Resizer is an exe app install. Morrowind Overhaul sounds and seems super dodgy. Even Caesar Augustus is some random exe made by who know who on Github with an 'Assets' folder. And like you said, disabling antivirus to get mods to work because mod files are flagged and deleted. All of those could be installing anything really, but it's a risk we take because trust has been established over time.
As for why a restart is required, you should ask the devs. They've been working on this project for over 3 years. I don't know, I'm just sharing how I got it to work. Multiple restarts aren't supposed to be required, so maybe a bit buggy.
Generally almost all modding sounds dodgy as all hell, so I just shared how I check to see if something is safe or actually malicious because you said it sounds dodgy.
dam this makes me loath actiblizz even more... for trying to kill the one perfect example of what made them a success aka the 'mentality' behind wc3 ...customer respect :/

This is nice, kind of. But there's no way I'm touching the Warcraft III: Reforged trash ever in my life. Just not happening. It's unlikely I will pay for anything Blizzard at this point.
And I played these games when they were new, and WoW for almost 10 years. Blizzard just lost me completely.

There's already quite a few WC2 "remakes" within WC3 way before Reforged was even announced. So frankly this is a pretty fresh experience, and they probably wanted to do something with the objectively higher definition art style of Reforged considering WC2 in Classic WC3 has been done a million times over

You can't just pick one game, replace models with a new one that looks like a different game and call that a "remake". It's not remaking War2 gameplay at all.

If they're looking for an experience that is exactly like WC2 then they shouldn't be looking towards the term "remake". I do consider CSW more of a reimagining than anything else like a remake, but I don't think it's anything bad to use terms like remake for this campaign. Final Fantasy VII Remake is considered by both the community and its creators as a remake, yet it plays like the farthest thing from FF7, and it even has a slightly different plot from the original game as well. Yakuza Kiwami 2 omits and adds a ton in comparison to the original game (Yakuza 2), its combat completely changed and even its characters are changed. To people and its devs, that's a remake. The term remake is incredibly malleable and from your perspective it may seem to not be a remake, but to many others it can feel that way.
It is most definitely a mod first and foremost, but it can also be considered a reimagining or recreation (synonymous with remake) of the original WC2. Ultimately, it depends on the individual, the community, and the developers whether a game is considered a remake or not. I respect your opinion all the same however - I just think people can call it whatever they want. Ultimately it's just semantics.

It's like picking up Heroes of Might and Magic, replace sprites and story and call that "Discipes 2 remake". Or pick up Age of Empires, change color of every unit to green and call that "Warcraft remake" (War1, 2, 3... doesn't matter which one if gameplay might be completely different)

@@Olagfigh I know we chatted in the other thread, but just so I'm not leaving you hanging here, yes basically it's established that the new FF7 is a 'remake' in the gaming world and it's nothing like the original mechanically and even has story changes. Basically, everyone has their own personal definitions for every gaming term and genre, but not only would the new FF7 (and this) be overwhelmingly labelled a 'remake', the continued use of the term 'remake' for projects like these means even if the word 'remake' meant something else in the past, it's now changed to mean this. Etymology means words shift meaning over time, so 'remake' now means this. 20 years from now, it can and likely will change again.

It is a remake, almost everyone considers this a wc2 remake. Blizzard was originally even planning to make wc1 and 2 remakes in Reforged but the plans were scrapped, so fans took over. This has original 3D assets, texture work, voice acting, script writing, mission design, and more. This isn't just a set of maps.
No, it is not a remake :D Please do not misslead people that prefer War2 gameplay over War3. It's a campaign for War3 and core gameplay is based on War3 (leveling up and powerful heroes, items, fighting neutral creatures, weak spellcasters, huge amount of hp per unit and slow attack speed, no base blocking with buildings etc.).
You will get War3 experience + getting oil + no Upkeep costs. If you are fine with that then yes, it a great thing and worth playing. But, it is not a War2 remake.
Well you're gonna have to define 'remake' then lol. I call it a remake because it's not just using War3 assets, they did voice acting, 3D modelling, 18 minute short film machinimas, etc.

Remake is not about replacing assets or voice acting. It's about re-making core idea of original.
You can't say Chronicles are remaking idea for War2 when it's clearly a War3 gameplay with tiny changes to it. It's not a bad thing, many people will prefer RPG/RTS mix over RTS. But I wouldn't call that a remake, when it is just a different game.
Take a look at Actraiser: Renaissance or Age of Empires 2: Return to Rome. These are remakes. New engines, new assets, but same core idea for a game.

And many (including me) would say this is a remake because it is remaking the core ideas of War2, it's remade into War3 style is all. War 3 is not like War 2 at all, so this is War 2 remade in War 3.
This is reinforced in popular terminology and common understanding by many prominent places labelling this a 'remake' or 'fan remake'. GameSpot, Wowhead, PCGamesN, Windows Central, TechSpot, Game Rant, Polygon, NeoGAF, and plenty of other places calls this a 'remake'. So if you don't want this to be called a remake, you got your work cut out for you.
To be even clearer, do you consider Caesar 3 Julius a remaster or remake? Is Augustus a remaster or remake? How about Black Mesa Source that makes Half Life 1 in the Half Life 2 engine? Is that a remake for you? Or do you call them something else?

Exactly, War3 is not like War2 and Chronicles are almost 100% like War3. That's why I'm saying it's not a remake. It's War3 with new models, new voice acting etc.
It's hard for me to agree with the part when you are saying "is not like War2 at all, but is War 2 remade". But I think I got your point... visuals, story and audio is based on War2.
I know that oldies are usually not playing games anymore but if there are people that prefer War2 gameplay over War3 should know what it is before they pay Blizzard for Reforged. I was almost one of these people after watching first trailer of Chronicles :D
To be completly fair, I am very impressed what Lorecraft achieved with Chronicles. It's a wonderful custom campaign for War3. Very well done, with a lot of passion to WoW lore.
About places like GameSpot, their articles must be catchy and when an old game is remade it just sound awesome.
About Caesar 3 and Half Life... damn, I'm mostly RTS and TBS player so I have no idea :D I have played Caesar 1 or 2, many years ago but that's it.
I would say this:
If Black Mesa Source is following same gameplay as Half Life 1, but with new engine and new features - it is a remake (like Actraiser remake).
If it would be Half Life 1 engine with HD graphics - it is a remaster (like AoE DE).
If it would be Half Life 2 with new models that are based on Half LIfe 1 characters - it is a Half Life 2 with a mod (like War3 Chronicles)
