Why Munich Banned Skyscrapers

  • Look north from Munich's Olympic Park or gaze south from the Englischer Garten - the view is unmistakably Bavarian. Church spires pierce the skyline, framed by the majestic Alps, with the unmistakable twin towers of the Frauenkirche cathedral reigning supreme. This iconic landmark, with its distinctive onion domes, has dominated the city's vistas since its completion in 1524.
For centuries, Munich has fiercely protected this scene. A strict 100-meter building height limit, imposed in 2004, ensures the cathedral's silhouette remains unchallenged. But change could be on the horizon. A controversial proposal threatens this carefully curated cityscape, raising the specter of modern towers vying for dominance alongside Munich's treasured symbol. Will the city's cherished skyline be forever transformed?

The proposed two towers are nowhere near the centre. They would be built around 5km away from the centre on an ugly place which hasn’t been used for decades. It would be a blessing for us!

This is an example of very little respect by architects who even think about that.

As a Resident of Munich I think we could build taller than 100 Meters. There are two main problems: the people don't want Buildings taller than 100 Meters and on the other hand people don't want that every green area will be sealed with concrete. A decision should be made. Well these are only my thoughts!

You can still build tall buildings and keep or even create green spaces. There is a term called floor area ratio where the taller you build, the more open green space you need to keep on the ground floor. Example- Singapore

Or ban air bnb, Ferienwohnungen, Zweitwohungen, buildings as inverstments, foreigners owning property (many, many countries do this, not sure if rich people from elsewhere buy up houses in Munich, but here in Berlin & Hamburg etc, they do & it's a bad idea), have a state buyback of real estate & allot flats to people according to needs. Also encourage family planning & somehow regulate businesses that bring in their own workforce, tourism, etc. You can of course, ruin a european town of authenticity & beauty & make it an ugly mess to feel modern - but what's the use of living at all, if the world you live in looks shit & feels shit & has not beauty, aethetics & soul!? I'm all for protectionism & a backwater social democracy - what actual good has Exportweltmeister & Wirtschaftssuperpower brought us!? Too many idiots that drive absurd american tank like SUV, and mostly everybody being unhappy & stressed, including SUV owners.

@@lolakauffmann While on that path also ban ECB. The biggest reason for the prices increasing is the central bank money printing and not foreigners. If this is your logic, apartments, food, including water wouldn't be cheaper in Dubai than in Munich, afterall Dubai is one of the free-est and most international city in things that actually matter to investors. Drinking and throwing beer bottles on streets is illegal and thankfully so for the nuisance those people cause.

@@rishabdhar6900 For all I care build skyscrapers in Dubai - just leaave Europe alone. And keep canadian pension funds off german real estate. Broken beer bottles are annoying, but that's a cultural problem of stupid young people & tourists, and easy to sweep up.
But once Germany have lost our skylines & architecture (what's left after our idiotic war) our iconic cities are gone for good, and so is our culture & all that really makes Germany worthwhile. I don't need to be wealthy in a generic "urban center". Germany goes back way before unification in 1871, industry & car manufacturing. I'd much rather Germany be poorer & remain beautiful & livable & focus more on philosophy, music & farming again.

I love skyscrapers… but dont do it munich! If you build skyscrapers itll become just another city. These days its more rare to not have towers than to have them. I dont think every city in the world should be the same, some should be short, some tall, some old, some new. Munich should keep its historic charm, once its gone it can never come back.

My home Scotland (constituent country of UK) does not really have skyscrapers. Glasgow has some tall residential (tower blocks) buildings but none I would put in the classification of skyscraper. Our Capital Edinburgh is similar to Munchen, a very old city with classic arcitechture, Edinburgh would look terrible with skyscrapers, I think Munchen would be spoiled too. Glasgow would suit skyscrapers as it has a different character and layout, but no other city in my country can really justify them as our population density is too low.

Munich won’t have a skyline in the near future (I’m from Munich). Nevertheless, there has been a study on where high rises above 100m could be built. Therefore there will be towers at carefully designated areas with respect to our city and the mountainous skyline.

The failure of Munich as a city with these idiotic policies is exemplified by the fact that rents in Munich are the same as Swiss rentals with half the after tax income of Switzerland. Let that sink in. Munich is a city for elites and the policies are designed in such a way that elites get to enjoy the vast villas, mansions, etc they live in. And these elites have fooled the commoners into believing all this crap. Those aesthetic low rise buildings mean that there are numerous people in Munich who cannot feed themselves and are homeless. The homelessness problem in Munich city center is rather extreme. I am sure those people will be saying - well I don't have a roof, atleast I have a nice view while I am shivering to death. :)

    Hi there,
Let me introduce myself, my name is Aldie, a professional voice over talent who speaks fluent Indonesian.
I'm sure your videos will be more interesting to Indonesian viewers if they are delivered by a narrator in Indonesian. This of course also expands the reach of your videos.
That's why I'm interested in working with you.
    Can there be opportunities?
    Regards

That’s the thing … no wealthy person wants to live in an expensive unit they paid lots of money for with “all walks of life”
And for good reason. And that’s the way it is
