I recently finished transcribing one of my favorite solos of all time and I wanted to share it with you.
It’s Troy Roberts’ (KILLING tenor player, composer, producer who tours regularly with Joey DeFrancesco and Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts) extraordinary blowing on the Thad Jones’ songbook staple, “The Groove Merchant.”
Seriously. One of my favorite solos. Of ALL TIME!
I love the way he weaves blues, bop, ‘three against two’, and SO MUCH soul with his impeccable time and huge sound in this 5:14 clip. Willing to bet you’ll dig it too…
The guy goes from a yts -21 to an effing old school Conn and doesn't realize it's got bad ergonomics and proceeds to kick major ass! A true legend!

Also, when I first saw this video I thought it was Joey DeFrancesco on the organ just from the shear brilliance of the backing. It is actually Emmet Cohen on organ just slaying it with both the comp and the bass line. Shout out to him as well. Amazing performance!
