A ride on the first day of operation to the general public. Now it's possible for everyone to enjoy this hidden gem in the heart of London, as a part of the Postal Museum. Located beneath the Mount Pleasant centre, the visitor will see the history of that transport syste, connecting Paddington with the East End via Oxford Street with stations on the major Central London post offices.
Two brand new battery locomotives are in operation for this new touristic attraction.

Mail rail was operational when I joined royal mail at mount pleasant. Used to be very busy i still remember we use to get thousands of bags coming every day and despatched to various destinations. I am still working here in mount pleasant. I have seen lot of changes in the past thirty years. Reminds me of the old days.

Showing my age now, I had a tour of Mount Pleasant when the railway was still carrying mail.

Seems a shame that there isn't any archival footage of a mail train traveling the full length of the line through each station while the facilities were still in active use.

You need to go on the train in person to experience it properly as I did today. Truly amazing experience.

That is great......, I regularly watch Hudson Hawk just to see the trains.
The Film crew had staff dress up as monks for filming because the system never shut down operations, the staff went about their business, while the film scenes were shot.
The film portrays the network as the "Vatican's postal system".

The line ran from Paddington Head District Sorting Office in the west to the Eastern Head District Sorting Office at Whitechapel in the east, a distance of 6.5 miles (10.5 km). It had eight stations, the largest of which was underneath Mount Pleasant, but by 2003 only three stations remained in use because the sorting offices above the other stations had been relocated

Did London have telephones in the 1930s?

Yes, telphones in London started appearing in London in the late 1800's, Started to grow as a network in like 1900.

The service was operated by private companies until it was nationalized as a General Post Office department shortly before WW1. The GPO had enjoyed a monopoly in telegrams since 1870. Until 1969, when British Telecom was spun off, it had sole control of letters, parcels, telephones and telegrams.
