As a trans person don't you think self i.d. is pretty damaging to your rights as an actual transgender person who goes through gender dysphoria and what not? If anyone can just say 'I'm a woman' or 'I'm a man' it kind of erases your entire struggle, your condition and may even prevent future people suffering with dysphoria get the help they need...as it's not just as simple as saying I'm a woman', trans people go through a lot to even get to the point of registering as the sex they desire, let alone going through physical medical changes etc.
This is great, Katie, I really enjoyed that (inasmuch as one can ‘enjoy’ rampant transphobia from Britain’s Great and Worthy). I like the way you were able rip apart their biased narrative and to show exactly how the debate is being framed. Throw up an argument about safeguarding children and suddenly, it is pure emotionalism trumping reason. Also, you might be interested to know that there was a Spectator article written by Rachel Johnson in which she nonchalantly name-dropped Gharlane Maxwell into the piece. As you know, Maxwell has just recently spent $7M in legal defence against charges of the very sort the British Establishment are prone to accusing transgender people of. Great work - I’ve definitely subscribed
Thank you very much for watching my video, for your great feedback and for very kindly subscribing, Amelia. xxxx Yes, the 'think of the children' card is a typical gaslighting technique used by transphobes. Transphobes attempt to demonise the trans community by associating us with sexual predators when the majority of sexual predators are, in fact, cis people. It's similar to the way that homophobes did this to gay people in the 1970s and '80s. It tries to play on what they assume is the audience's ignorance and consequent fear of trans women and girls but what they forget is that most cis people in the UK know at least one trans person in real life and so the media's continued attempts to sell the transphobic stereotype of transgender females as predators is wearing thin. Thanks to more trans people coming out of the closet and the trans community and our allies getting organised and calling out anti-trans dogwhistles like this whenever the media tries to peddle them more and more people are becoming wise to such transphobic nonsense now.
An excellent analysis there. I was a Brownie Leader around ten years ago, before they had a trans policy (I suspect some of the old guard would have had issues with me being Pagan and bisexual, nevermind anything else, but the organisation seemingly didn't). The background checks and safeguarding policies back then were spot-on, and have moved with the times appropriately. I read the trans policy in detail recently, when I potentially had time to volunteer again (it turned out I didn't, because of other work and volunteer roles); the non-binary section is a little too (dare I say) binary for my liking, so applying the policy on trans men means I could be a volunteer but not a leader, which would have been fine for me. I think there's a place for both Guiding and Scouting (which does admit all genders of children and leaders), but Guiding is still where my heart lies. As an aside, I went to a single sex school, as did several of my trans friends. I can't speak for other schools, but my school celebrates Pride, and asked for my input. I recorded a video on my experiences of being non-binary, and they've asked if they can use it more widely in the curriculum.
Thank you so much for watching my video and for your excellent and very informative feedback, Stevie! It's so reassuring to know that the Guiding and Scouting movement is working towards trans inclusivity and is not caving in to pressure from transphobic individuals, organisations and the elements of the UK media that are trying to amplify these obsessed bigots' voices. Glad to hear that your old school celebrates Pride and obviously values the input of ex-students, and I guess current students, who are LGBTQ+. Sorry, perhaps I was a bit too harsh in my stereotypical judgement of single sex schools and what I imagine them to be like? It must be so frustrating for you to watch both the trans community and the guiding and scouting movement attacked in Sky News item below, along with all the misinformation and fear mongering being spread here. I guess the tragedy is that some parents may watch the above news item and go away with the impression that guiding and scouting is not safe for their children too. Thank you so much for watching and for commenting. Take care and stay safe.
