- Newport & Narragansett Bay's 80 tonner has now been put into service after being saved from a closed powerplant in Springfield, MA last year. This video follows the unit's first revenue run on the railroad's dinner train through Portsmouth, RI.
The unit is a 1941 product of General Electric's Schenectady, NY plant that saw service there before being sold to a power plant in Springfield, MA in 1959. After decades of use it was put into safe inside storage in the plant but then sat for years. In 2023 the engine was loaded on a flatcar and railed off property enroute to the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad in Portsmouth, RI. To see more of this unit's story click the links below:

The siding the train departed from was restored a couple years ago after decades of no use. The train is seen traversing the north end of the Newport Secondary that before 2017 was sparsely used.

Awesome ...love a good 80 tonner vid!!!
Thanks for watching!
Maryland's Walkersville Southern could likely use an addition like this to their critter fleet.
Cool!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome! What's the plans for 43?
Getting some work done but just in back up service.
Nice!!! Glad to see they got it up and running so quickly... Great early model 80 tonner. If it has it's original engines (Cummins LI600) it should be a substantial boost in power to pull the trains with over the other locomotives.
Thanks for watching!
Dig the Budd on the back end
Thanks for watching!
Is your railway going to help with the commuting issues at the harbor/ river in Maryland? Nice camera work... the yellow steal and blue looks nice at a distance for sure... Thanks
Is that the old Grafton & Upton engine?
No
saw that guy on m425 last year
Thanks for watching!
Let's hope there's some badly needed trackwork done very soon!
Yeah, I noticed that too... Lots of low rail joints and track out of line. Unfortunately, addressing these issues on small operations like this, is slow to come and is often on a must do or need basis.
Unless you have mechanical track maintenance equipment doing tie repair and track alignment the old fashioned way is backbreaking work and you don’t get much done in a day. I speak from experience as a volunteer on steam railroads here in PA. If you replace, say, 40 ties with a crew of six able bodied volunteers that’s a VERY good day. Plus there are the loose track joints to tighten up, insulated joints to take apart and re-insulate, gauge rods on curves to fool with and so on.
Perhaps an F unit is in the future for this particular train...that would be nice!
Thanks for watching!
