  • Hi Everyone,
Tom & I had originally planned to fish the run from Quincy OH on the Miami River but it's a long way fro home and there was a threat of thunderstorms so we opted to make a run just south of Dayton from Carlisle to Middletown. I had never fished this stretch before and always am happy to fish new water.
We launched about 7:45 but, I had arrived at our meeting spot early and decided to bank fish until Tom's arrival. Glad I did. In that short period I managed to catch 5 fish including my big fish of the day, a 2 lb smallmouth bass. The morning bite was a definite thing yesterday and it shut off around 9 am.
Although we were able to catch fish throughout the day, there were definite slow periods. The water was low so when you found fish in a deeper section, there were plenty of them stacked in there.
It's been a while since I have fished creature baits on the river because they snag a lot and I don't want to deal with that. In the off season I purchased a pack of 1/16 oz bullet weights that allow me to get through the rocks without snagging as much. I was pleased with them because they allowed me to fish rocky banks without losing a single soft plastic lure. That's not to say I didn't lose ANY lures. The wind gave me fits in that it caused a huge nest in my high speed reel. The wind blew me off track and I instinctively changed my casting angle. Well, that didn't work. I snagged my wack rig on my back swing and the hook on my rooster tail cut the line on my wacky rig and snapped off in the process causing me to lose both lures. Later the wind knotted my casting reel causing a sudden stoppage in mid cast. The line snapped and one of my purple spinners went flying through the sky on its way to its new home at the bottom of the river. It's the first time in years that I have lost multiple lures in a single day. Oh well, it happens.
We finished the day with 35 fish between us. It was a good day. The water was shallow and you had to pay close attention to boulders in the water.
    Enjoy,
    Kelly

I have not fished much south of town. Now I have fished from Miamisburhg to Franklin, Franklin to Middletown and I want to keep working my way south to Hamilton. It's still the Miami River but new water to me. The variety of fish seems to change a little with the different sections. I catch more pike and saugeye up north, There are white bass and stripers in the southern areas. They're all fun to me.
      Thanks Ed,
      Kelly
