Alright gentlemen I surrender. Jake your tasting notes were splendid and thorough and I agree with your appreciation for Balvenie 12. Keep up the great work. I’ve learned much from all three of you and you have broadened my scotch curiosities.
Nothing but love Jan, it’s all good craic. Genuinely love having such an incredible community that will call us out and keep us wanting to do better. Thank you for joining us so regularly and for getting involved in the comments. I’m glad the tasting notes suffice but in truth Stevie is still my favourite too! Sláinte my friend, hope to meet one day soon 🥃🥃
Great episode fellas. My take on 12’s that “could” challenge your top 3 would be
1. Kilkerram 12
2. Glenturret 12
3. Glengarioch 12. 🥃.
💯🔥
three strong contenders - appreciate the recommendations and will be sure to reference them for our next battle
Another solid episode gentleman, this one was great! Despite some of the recent changes, GlenDronach 12 absolutely still has great quality and deserves to be a shelf staple. Thank you so much for the shout out as well, it's greatly appreciated. If you guys do a follow-up episode to this one, would you consider a "battle of the cask strength 12yo" as it's own category? The Bunna 12 cask strength, Edradour 12 cask strength (ibisco decanter), Springbank 12 cask strength, and Redbreast 12 cask strength would be a killer lineup! Cheers and thanks for the great content!
you're not the only one wanting a cask strength battle so I think we'll have to submit to our audience requests and get it sorted - such a tough life we lead! thanks for tuning in and getting involved as always good sir, you're a gent! sláinte
Recommendations for the 12, deanston, glenallachie, aultmore, edradour, glen garioch
nice one Tim - we'll be sure to reference these recommendations for our next battle!
Bunnahabhain 12 yr is one of my favourite 12yrs ..
@@graemebucknall2331 such a great dram!
Definitely need to do a battle of the Irish whiskies! Paddy’s day release
?
probably won't be out for Patrick's Day but we'll get it into the mix for sure!
Bunna 12 is my go to 12yr, and one that I recommend often.
Excellent episode, gents!
thanks for doing us Sascha, glad you enjoyed it and agree on the Bunna. sláinte!
Bunna 12 CS (2022) is my absolute favourite, until I find my next favourite but who knows when, but Deanston 12 is also a great whisky and great value.
Deanston 12 will go into the next lineup! We tried to play it fairly and go without the cask strength expressions Euan, but glad you’re enjoying such a stunner 🥃🥃 sláinte
I was also at Bunna for the first time in 2018 when it was the tiny old shop. when the tour finished we came to the shore front warehouse with the name on the side and they were filling casks that day. I vividly remember the stream of sweet px Sherry running out the front door and trickling down the drain, you would have thought you were entering an abbatoir. It was a beautiful sunny day in May with the sea and the Paps of Jura on full display- I kick myself regularly in the balls for not taking a photo.
It’s my favourite 12 from what could be my favourite distillery but as far as contenders go I would recommend Edradour, Deanston, Ancnoc, Glenallachie, Glen Garioch, Kilkerran, Glenturret and the new and improved Royal Brackla. Great podcast again gents, loving these discussions.
thanks for tuning in and commenting Greig - you're making me want to swim across to Islay now with that description! great suggestions and all strong contenders - we'll be sure to get some of them into the next battle so stay tuned my friend! sláinte
For fear that I will one day bump into one of you with enthusiastic excitement I feel it is only fair to say that I, Jan Benoit am one of your dedicated female followers. However, we whisky women still enjoy the brash and unfiltered tone of your channel. Cheers from Canada gentlemen.
thanks for joining us again Jan and apologies as I think we have potentially referred to you as Benny previously. we love having such an incredible audience and appreciate any followers that can take our brash approach with the heap of salt which it is intended to come with and have a laugh with us - we're only here to have the craic and would never want to offend anyone. I hope we do meet one day soon as I would love to share a dram (or three!) with you. sláinte Jan!
The comment section is on 🔥 with its suggested marks.
Core Range: Glenturret 12 (Betting Favorite), GlenAllachie 12, Kilkerran 12, Bunnahabhain 12, GlenGarioch 12, Deanston 12
Limited: Bunnahabhain 12 CS (2022), Springbank 12 CS, Edradour 12 CS (2009 Vintage)
agreed! appreciate your recommendations also - we'll be sure to reference all the comments for our next battle!
Glenturret 12 its luscious whisky
seems as though you're not the only one who thinks so - we'll have to get it into the next battle lineup! sláinte
Powers 12 year and Yellow Spot 12 are both solid irish whiskies to include
great shouts on the Irish front - nice one Peter!
Thanks for the mention guys haha! Would love to see the cask strength showdown 😊
thanks for tuning in and always being such a strong part of our community Chris! love the cask strength showdown idea
Great video fellas. Ine thing to contribute, and granted its not entry level but you forgot to discuss or mention the Bunna 12 Cask Strength... unbelievable dram!!
No doubt it’s a winner. We tried to stick to the standard 12s though Stuart - maybe we’ll do a battle of the cask strengths at some point soon!
Glendronach 12 is what got me into drinking whisky and single malt world!!!
Poor Stevie, working with a couple of posh boys!
It’s a tough life ey Sandy! Don’t worry, Stevie’s posh enough himself
Stevie must have gone to a posher school than me, he had hundreds and millions on his cake, we only had hundreds and thousands!
@@richardkilley6838 this has made my day - well done Richard, very well played
Great stuff gents. Your craic keeps me laughing all the way to work! And Jake, please continue with your unique tasting notes......."f***kng delicious always puts the whisky on my buy list. My two suggestions would be the 12's from Deanston and Glen Garioch. Both bleepin delicious. Cheers!
thanks Bill - glad to hear my brashness has you buying! Both great suggestions and you're not the only one to recommend them so we'll have to make sure they're in the next lineup. sláinte and thanks for tuning in as always
Enjoyed this fellas! Mine would be:
1: Bunna 12 (the first scotch i tried that made me go woah! Theres a whole other world out there), beyond peat, sherry and bourbon - salt and seaside!
2: Glen Garioch 13 - for the creamy oily mouthfeel
3: Tobermory - for the herbs!
That Knappogue 12 is a gorgeous drop a great example of refill bourbon coconut goodness! Do an Irish episode!
Definitely do a battle of the Cask Strengths. Redbreast 12 CS Vs Bunnahabhain 12 CS Vs Benromach 10 CS Vs Springbank 12 CS Vs Glenallachie 10 Cs.... yes please. Lol
Now that’s a lineup! We’re on it 🥃🥃
Glendronach, spot on, it is still excellent, looking forward to that episode. Kilkerran, GlenAllachie, Coal Ila, Deanston, Glenturret, Benriach and Loch Lomond are my suggestions for the other 12YO heat. Not sure about all these tasting notes from Jake, just tell us what you think mate.
sorry Matt, too much waffle was it?! great suggestions, we'll be sure to come back to this comment section before our next battle
@@TheWhiskyBaron nah, just Janking your chain
@@MattBu thought as much - you'd fit in nicely with Stevie and Ian on our next auction episode no doubt! always winding me up so they are

@@MattBu we definitely will - already discussing how we can make this work in the best way possible so we'll keep you in mind!
If your going to a dry month it might as well be February, it's the shortest month!
Truth!
Bunna, Tobermory,Glendronach,Deanston,Glenallachie
Could you review Bowmore 12 at every episode so funny, BUT no tasting notes and still very clear!😂
you've got it Pierre! sláinte my friend
great work again guys , the bunna 12 is a superb 12 year old and will be very hard to beat, not a 12 year old but port charlotte 10 ( entry level whisky) is easily on par with the bunna .
love PC! we may have to do a battle of the 10s at some point..
Great episode fellas. Can totally agree with your choices. However, i would add my voice for the Glen Garioch 12 and Deanston 12. Id also like to throw a wild card in there, from my fair isle of Vancouver. The Shelter Point 12 yr old is an absolute banger, even if i do prefer a bit of Sherry influence and a liberal pinch of peat. It's super hard to get in Canada, so practically impossible to get in the uk. Let me know if you'd like me to send you a sample. Would be fun to see it in a world of whisky head to head!
great shout on the GG and Deanston James, although I can't say I've even heard of Shelter Point! we'll have a look into it for you on a follow up episode. thanks for tuning in and commenting as always, we really appreciate your support!
Edradour 12 , Kilkerran 12 and Glenturret 12 are all really solid also
In the US, Glendronach 12 is basicallly the same price as Macallan 12 which means the $70-80 range. So basically, at $89-100 I go for the Glendronach 15. And I have enough GD 12 and Mac 12 brown boxes purchased prior to the price hikes to not really have to buy either anymore😂 🥃
not cheap at all! although in fairness I'd go for the Glendronach over the Macallan all day long if they're priced the same. Good shout on levelling to the 15 though and lucky that you're well stocked up on both - don't kill those bottles too quickly! sláinte
Crazy to hear some of the value differences in your country. Here in Canada, Balvenie 12 runs around $140 Canadian. For comparison, the Bunna 12 is around $103 Canadian, and that is a bit more pricey for a 12 year old.
not cheap at all and probably can't be considered entry level at that rate. hopefully you're still enjoying yourself with a few tasty drams Greg - sláinte!
I haven't seen it mentioned, but it would be cool to see the new-ish Royal Brackula 12. 46% and non chill filtered, I think it would stand as a solid option, especially for the price
appreciate the suggestion, we'll be sure to get it into one of the follow up episodes! thanks for commenting, sláinte
The dram I am drinking while watching this is the Glenglassaugh 12. It would not look out of place on that shelf.
Nice one Chris - we’ll be sure to get it into the next battle and see how it stands up. Might make it through to round 2! Sláinte
Apologies, I commented at the beginning of the video. You go on to mention Glenglassaugh and I fully endorse your comments. Another great podcast.
@@chrisjepson5050 not at all Chris - we appreciate you jumping into the comment section throughout the videos! thanks for the support my guy, really appreciate it
Battle of the CS expressions: 👌👌👌

@@TheWhiskyBaron 😁🥃
Don't forget Deanston 12 !
we'll be sure to include it in the next battle and see how it fares! thanks Pierre
Thanks for the great episode. Just got through it on spotify. For the challengers in the next round...what about Powers John's Lane and Old Perth 12? Both great value for the money in my humble POV. Keep up the good work & Cheers from Germany
I’d recommend Royal Brackla 46% natural colour and non chill-filtered, it should give that top 3 a run. I’m with Stevie, GlenDronach for me but vs Royal Brackla that’s a really close call.
If you put an Irish in the mix it could potentially come out on top, shock you guys. Powers John’s Lane 46% non chill-filtered it’s my 12yo core range to beat No1. There’s also a cask strength, it’s a stunner for £70 but not for this head to head, you need to try this one.
I’d also chuck in Balblair 12 to the mix. AnCnoc 12 is great in the (often) sub £30 bracket but I would much rather pay more for a version with higher abv as I think it would rival the Kilkerran 12.
all interesting shouts Andrew, we'll be sure to get some into one of our next battles and see how they hold up. thanks for tuning in and commenting my friend, sláinte!
Nothing new to add, just want to underscore that the Kilkerran 12, Glenturret 12, Edradour 12 (Caledonia) and Glenallachie 12 are all amazing whiskies I'd want to see in this comparison
great suggestions - seems like we may need another couple of first round fights before we progress onto round 2!
@@TheWhiskyBaron well I'm sure you'll be able to move on to round two in 2026 or so ;-)
@@klizzt I think you might be right! will we ever find out what the best 12Y/O is?!
@@TheWhiskyBaron probably not, but it'll be lots of fun along the way :-)
@@klizzt you know it! love how cool our community is - you sound like someone we could get onto an episode and have a great chat with. sláinte my friend!
Peaty and briny whisky work so good together. But it is not always the case. I find that salty, briny, cured ham and umami whisky has a deeper flavour profile, which is at times hidden by the peat monsters out there. There are many top peaty videos, but not so many salty. Please can you turn your attention, for an episode, to the salt.
to the salt we shall go! interesting topic and I know exactly what you mean David - sometimes the delicacies of a coastal dram can be shrouded by the peat element. Talker is one that strikes the balance beautifully IMO, but we'll see what else we can explore on this side of things. appreciate you getting involved and commenting, great shout!
Very interested in the Knappogue
we'll be sure to get it into a future lineup but as a limited edition it didn't seem as relevant as the others. glad it's of interest though!
i'm gone pour a bunna 12. best 12 year old
Hi guys
What about the Glenkinchie 12 yr ..
This I’ve not tried yet 😩
Have you and what was it like ..
I’d love to drink peaty whisky as I feel like I’m missing out I just can’t get past the tcp flavour .. it’s so annoying ..
Ian - I bought the Aberlour 12 NCF here in Poland a few months back for the equivalent of £59, its 48% ABV, and just checked with my online supplier and its still there, same price (incl 2 free Aberlour glasses!!). Should I add a few more bottles to my stash is the question?
That sounds like a deal and a half! Something for us to get into the next battle Euan 🥃🥃
Fucking great episode….sorry if this is too generic review 😂 brilliant entry dram for me is Glenallachie 12. Generally under £50 and at 46% great value!
🤣 love it! great shout on the Glenallachie - stay tuned Marshy as we've got a seriously special episode on the books soon. sláinte my friend
Hey gents! It's so funny for me to hear about price and availability of bunna 12 - about 100 usd in my market and only in few places haha (tobermory 12 is 45-50 usd still)
price differences can be a killer but hope it's not putting you off! sláinte my friend
well, I can buy bunna later during travel or something and enjoy something else right now) cheers! @@TheWhiskyBaron
@@DmitryPetrovYT good man - safe travels and hopefully you'll pick up some tasty treats on your way!
Bunna 12 Deanston 12 Old Pulteney 12 Glenlivet 12 licensed and illicit still Glendronach 12 but Bunna 12 for me is just an amazing oily sherried expression that is just rich and nutty a 12 year old above the rest for me. Aldo special mention to the Glenallechie 12 which is almost as decadent as the bunna.
Great episode, however I believe Stevie may need to report Jake to HR 😅
Don’t give him any ideas JJ!
@drampirate I thought I already had ya cheeky feck!
kilkerran 12 would be interesting, just bcs it is my first whiskey I bought. Would love to hear your guys opinions.
