I knew Matthew the last year in Coro, Venezuela. He gave us many lessons and technical tips about the guitar, but what I most remember is that he told us how important is that every player develop his own way to do and face any piece through, in technical and performing aspects. In that way, the player would be unique. This video show us how unique can be Matthew through his playing even on such a controversial masterwork like this. I've enjoyed so much this video because his performance has very interesting aspects, sort of John Williams performance in the 70's. This would be a very modern version of that one with the great touch Matthew brings to it. A 2.0 performance if you will.
0@@galleryofguitar That's what I believe. I am a beginner in a different genre, and without such people like yourself I would never have even picked up a guitar. Be proud
I agree and can't fathom anyone showing disrespect to this great man. I have been playing for a long time just by ear. I'm getting to where I wish I could play classical guitar now. It's hard to play this sort of thing by ear though.
Matthew very much has the effect of inspiring me to learn how to play classical guitar. It's something I never thought was possible before but I'm trying. He is a master of the guitar and really awesome. When I searched for Galliard by Cutting he was the third guitarist that appeared and I thought he played it so perfectly that I subscribed to his channel and I am very happy that I did because there's so many great videos and I really think he's very special.

I've listened to this piece many times on the Tube and this performance is the best one of all! I enjoy and have benefited from watching your intstructional videos as well. Thank you.
Such a versatile and charismatic player.he never leaves me indifferent or disappointed.Has a great tone and a roughed technique, and he knows his instrument intimately. Thanks for this wonderful rendition.
Ohh! This music is superb. I am so glad to have just found this channel and known this Great guitarist. My mother was an excellent classical pianist and I couldn't live without listen to classic music. But I think classic guitar well played is one of the best instruments. So touching! . This is music! Thank you Mr. McAllister!
Superb. Perfect technical control and yet totally musical. All three sections at a pace that suits the section. Melody always clearly exposed. Thank you.
Excelentte interpretación , Maestro Mc Allister. Y he escuchado antes docenas de versiones. Gracias por sus videos.(Excellent interpretation, Maestro Mc Allister. And I have heard dozens of versions before. Thank you for your videos.).
Before watching and listening I knew that it will be a pleasure for my ears. And so it is. I like your way of "handling the guitar" (to express music) so much! thank you, Wolfgang
Thank you Jon, and thanks for your feedback and comments on many of the videos up here at the Gallery. I know the students will also appreciate them very much.
I play this beautiful piece and it is very hard to keep the melody clear and even when your hand position is in a lock that is all fingers down and 3 have to move and one doesn't so great applause for a excellent performance technically and more important musically. So I am inspired to dig out the music and play this piece now I can see that it is humanly possible. Bravo and thanks for posting this beautiful recital.
@@galleryofguitar Mathew have you any advice or excercise to overcome the left hand lock. All fingers down and they lock and it is difficult to move any without the others following. Thanks for all your work really appreciate your vids 😊
Very well played. I was particularly impressed with lack of unwanted 'squeaks & buzzes'. Having watched an instructional video by Mr McAllister on the subject I know it is an aspect of the technical side that he puts considerable effort into, and considering the various issues of each movement in this regard that work/effort can be seen (or rather NOT heard) paying dividends here. Barely anything but the dots on the page heard here and played very nicely as well. You should be well pleased with this performance.
great playing...and i love the acoustic sound generated in the church building. Tell us a bit about this church history. what guitar do you used in this video?
Beautiful fleshy, organic, creamy yet clearly singing sound, ease of phrasing. This guitar fits you very well, i think you play better than you already did, if i may say so, perhaps also thanks to this instrument? Anyway great music, guitarist & great instrument.
So with regards to interpretation it is now a toss up between Matthew's and Denis Azabagic's versions. Actually, I like them both for different reasons.
I dont wish to sound repetitive like the rest and state the obvious "Beautifully Delivered" but want to get straight to my query :-) I have asked you about the immaculate guitar sound in your other video & now I want talk about delivering a composition mainly on the 9th/10th fret onwards. I somehow find the sound of the guitar not warm enough on the top half to merit the beginning of a composition specially when it has slow & melodic phrases. For fast melodic piece, short phrases and quick runs, the higher octave can be used is my opinion. Else, the sound is very plastic like. I am still looking for a guitar which sounds warm even there :-) Any thoughts.....
I could talk about the tone, the dynamics, the atmosphere.... but I say it's so beautiful. Thank you Matthew
Thank you Heike. 🙏🎶
8 years later and I still come back to listen to this. Beautifully played, Matthew.
Thanks Ryan!

One of the very best interpretations of this masterpiece. Certainly, the most sensitive and detailed rendition I've listened to so far.
Thank you Lorenzo!
how can anybody dislike such a beautiful and brilliantly played piece
Maybe they are jealous.. ;-)

I love the version of Thibaut Garcia, but yours is also pretty, maybe even more. 🎼
Well it is definitely different to Thibaut's version. Glad you like it. 😀🎶

what a brilliant performance of this beautiful composition, and that guitar sounds amazing - who built it?
+Snowfire Sunwind Michael Ritchie made the guitar, a great Scottish Luthier.
That was as close to perfect as it gets
