In my opinion, it is not the hardware that makes that much of difference. It is content creation methods. After release of PS3 and Xbox 360, there was two new things that really did matter: Facial motion capture (late 00s) and photogrammetry (around 2014). Since photogrammetry there hasn't been major technological changes and everything depends on artist skill.
Incorrect. Ray tracing/path tracing is the next big leap we are just about 5-10 more years away, technologically, from it achieving widespread adoption. In its current form it can be kind of gimmicky but true, full, path tracing is unbelievably transformative. It takes it that next level from “realistic for a video game” to actually realistic.
Basic raytracing doesn't make much of difference to rasterizer. Unbiased pathtracer can add fidelity when shooting enough rays per pixel with enough depth but that doesn't happen real time. Real time path tracing is biased and amount of rays to and depth of rays are very limited. Unbiased path tracing was big leap when doing modelling, precalculation and it can be used as reference but that is very old technique. Instead next thing that makes some difference is NPC animation technique what is made in upcoming GTA VI. But that is patent protected so widespread adoption for same can take 20 years, so other companies need to make workarounds to make similar results.
Unreal engine 5 is the end of gaming, it's gonna normalize unoptimization, and nobody is going to be able to play more than 1 game at a time because it's going to be a terabyte 😭
Haha, that’s what most people agree on! I see why people say it though, but for me I think ps2 to ps3 was a bit more noticeable. Maybe it’s my eyes 🤷♂️
You are a very skilled video editor and creator. You deserve much more recognition than you get. I know the hard work you put in, feel proud of yourself.
PS3-->PS4 was like that. I miss the days when even the launch title (such as the first time I saw the Super Smash Bros Melee intro) could really wow and blow you away compared to even the very best graphics from the previous gen.
Graphics peaked at the original Xbox. Everything was so fundamental, colorful and beautiful on it. A lil low res here and there but the games where fundamentally beautiful. Look at Halo and Ninja Gaiden. It looked so good you forget about it's beauty because I am immersed in digital worlds.
I switch between my PS4 and PS3 and the difference is noticeable but not crazy, recently got a PS2 and the difference between that and my PS3 is astronomical. I don’t know how people survived the pre HD era.
The thing is PC’s usually have many graphical options due to a wide array of possible pc specifications for different users. So basically choose the setting your pc can handle. Consoles usually come in just 1 or 2 different spec options like ps5 and ps5 pro so the game just automatically runs as good as it can possibly run on that console. But a lot of games now do offer a choice between performance and resolution tho
That would defeat the purpose of a console. It's meant to be simply plug and play (i know we have day one downloads, updates and need a online connection but still). People would be confused with those options. It's just simple to have a performance and quality mode.
I have PC and Ps5. The one thing about consoles is that the Ps2 used to push 60 fps with ease. Now, I only see bad practices and excuses on why the industry is so stagnant and why graphics and games are so stale and bland now.
@@dazioko yeah it’s crazy to me how every current Gen console game is split between performance and resolution mode. Like I thought at this point we’d be able to get 60 fps in every game 😭
60fps is super easy to achieve. It is just game developer incompetence action game doesn't run stable 60fps. Some games can benefit from 30 fps when camera is controlled to minimize panning and game is slow paced. Action games are different thing.
I believe game graphics reached their peak during the PS2-360 era. While there were minor improvements, such as enhanced lighting, shadowing, and material textures, significant advancements are yet to come. Another problem is the cost of transistor has went up significantly as well as game development costs has went up. Lastly raw imagination and development teams having the freedom and not afraid of taking risks for new IPs have been a challenge. The next major leap in graphics will likely involve the development of AI-powered image regeneration capabilities. Imagine feeding an old game like GTA SA into this image regenerator and it spits out life like graphics at 30-60fps with little to be done by devs except for training the AI model to have stable graphics. This would allow developers to create more realistic graphics on the fly. However, training these models to achieve 1:1 output on next-generation hardware will require significant computational resources. I anticipate that next-generation graphics will serve as a foundation for further improvements, with subsequent generations building upon this model. Consider how CGI movies are created. They are constructed using Ray-tracing and meshes, which are then rendered (hence the role of AI) to achieve the desired quality when displayed on the big screen. I believe this approach will be the driving force behind next-generation graphics. However, it raises the question of the power consumption required to achieve such advancements. While a 600+ watt GPU may seem like a powerful solution, I believe a more efficient NPU could be a more suitable choice to offload the workload from the GPU. I also don’t believe Sony,MS, Nintendo and Valve will not have 600+ watt consoles anytime soon.

Virtually the only game with realistic graphics that ever truly impressed me was Half-Life 2, due to the technical limitations of most PCs and consoles at the time it was released, and the fact that it still looks good now. Although, you can arguably say it isn't realistic because Valve has said they were inspired by comics and the NPCs do have a sort of animated quality to them.
Great vid. Funny asf 😂😂 you forgot to mention, games these days aren’t all about graphics. It’s about how a game feels. The most significant factor impacting FPS, a better GPU can handle more complex graphics at higher frame rates. You also forgot to mention ray tracing. That takes a lot of computing power as well. PS4 can’t handle such a thing. Don’t get me wrong I love this vid but the (“ps5s and xbsx didn’t grow in a linear manner”), I also understand you dudes already made your mind up about next gen. 😂😂😂 it’s just so many more factors that you’ve missed just like most people do when speaking on this topic.
Thanks man 😂 I agree with you, gameplay is definitely more important than visuals. I guess I just specifically wanted to concentrate on visuals in the video. I actually did consider mentioning Ray tracing but tbh in current gen games it’s a bit of a rarity as not too many games really support on consoles. But yeah thanks for the feedback 😁
at this point they should be selling me better performance over graphical fidelity, because THAT is where i can tell the difference between my ps4 and ps5.
We are not even close to "max graphics" possible for games.. But trying to achieve better graphics is gettin more meaningless year after year. Diminishing returns + higher development cost is not really something we can keep going forever. And consumers still want to only pay 60$ per game despite of decades worth of inflation.
You totally spit the whole reason why I still haven't even bought a PS4 or < or an xbox 1 or newer... especially when you take in account for emulation starting to catch up to current generation games pretty much. In the next 2 years the PS4 is going to be fully emulated.... the PS3 is close.... the PS2 is like 99.9% fully emulated by plain ass regular computer hardware and FPGA. The point is.... console manufacturers are gonna have to do something really wild the next 2 generations or they are gonna have to submit to apps or an all in one eco system and equivalent hardware.... they are nearly there now!
Oh man, it’s crazy how fast emulation is growing. While I won’t say it’s something game companies have to really worry about yet due to high barriers to entry for more modern emulation in terms of pc costs, technical issues, and knowing how to setup and download roms, I definitely understand how some people can be satisfied with just emulation at the moment lol. PS3 and switch are basically fully playable if you have a powerful enough computer.
Okay I just noticed you said console devs are gonna have to do something within the next 2 generations and that makes sense. My bad lol, I thought you were suggesting that emulation might be a problem for them very soon 😅
5:34 You might laugh but... playing Far Cry 3 now the game still looks dam good. Going to Far Cry 4 or 5... there is not THAT big of a difference, heck I would say 6 compared to 3 is not that huge a difference. 3 to 6 you mainly see in the textures used and possibly in some details. But when you look into the distance they look quite similar enough.
Teraflops do not provide any substantial evidence for gaming performance, but only provide how many floating point calculations. Providing information on the percentage of performance gained from the new generation of APU would be better than to spit a number out and be "bigger number better" "next generation" consoles do not have to provide more in the graphics department but now strive to push higher frame rates and visual fidelity in pushing more pixels.
Yeah you’re making sense, but I will add that while I agree with you about next gen consoles need needing to push more in the graphics department since I think gameplay Is much more important, some devs will always still push for that extra realistic look which simply upping the pixel count doesn’t equate to.
Games have reached Graphical Fidelity that's so good that I think Devs should allocate those extra Graphical power on frame rate and optimizations... Ray tracing is good and all but if its eating your frames I'd say remove it, older techniques that worked like or simulate Ray tracing is good enough... I just think that companies are pushing this Ray tracing so much that is hurting frames and our wallets...
Thank you so much! Ray tracing is very heavy on the gpu and console level ray tracing isn’t noticeable enough to sacrifice framerate for it. Well at least performance mode in most games drop ray tracing but it’s disappointing that they usually have to drop the resolution from native 4k also, just to give us 60fps
There is. I'm actually upgrading to a machine with 32 gigs for music production. If you run 3d modeling or CAD rendering software, or high fidelity fx in video editing, 16 gigs isn't taking you very far. If you're just gaming, sure, 16 is fine. Pointless comment yeah.
