Here's a question: assume we reach a point where video/audio recordings are no longer considered to be 100% verifiable evidence of wrongdoing because of the spread of deepfakes and voice generators. What do we then consider to be the gold standard of undoubtable proof? I'm not saying this as a negative or as a "we must stick with video/audio." I'm asking this because I don't know what evidence cannot be forged in the information age, especially after the news media, images, and now videos are no longer 90% or more reliable.
In the mind of a psychopath truth is what they want other people to believe. This is the reason why deepfakes exist. To either be used as "proof" of something fabricated, or prove a false innocence. However, for those of us that have the time to look closely, the real truth does still shine through, and the social dynamic hasn't changed: The higher you go in this society, the closer you are to the bottom. There is no gold standard, there never was. The jails are full of people that shouldn't be there, of lives ruined. And we're at this point basically having our society run by criminals. And it's always been like this. If anything the information deluge has just showed us what we really have.

@benjovi55 1) No one tried to claim we where a democracy. As for being a "republic"... Everything has a bloody trade off. If you have a democracy, the mob rules, if you have a republic, it takes longer, and the mob is smaller, and they have to work harder at it, but.. you still get f-ing mob rule, because no one is stopping lies from leading people to elect assholes (on both sides - just look at how hard the "leadership" of the self claimed left are pushing for another waffling idiot, while desperately trying to keep us from electing a "radical"). 2) The argument that nothing is wrong with printed guns would be a bit like knowing, before the first nuke was ever made, just how easy it is, in general, to make one, and arguing, "Well, right now its not practical to make them, so its fine if every person on the planet can legally buy enriched uranium." Its not what is possible "now" that is the problem, its what is likely to be possible, almost literally tomorrow (given the rate at which printing tech is advancing). That said.. not at all surprised that someone who doesn't believe in deepfakes brings up two utterly worthless right wing talking points.
Once again, technology has developed faster than the awareness and regulation for it, causing severe damage in the process. As she said, the solution will have to include regulation, education and international cooperation in order to succeed. I think the first step to solving all recent technology-related issues is to educate the people in power. The majority of politicians around the world are on the older side and shamefully technology and media illiterate.
I think most people in power don’t care or would even like to misuse deepfakes, so educate the public first - social scientists and others who study the bases of society and those whose developed the technology should do that, BTW.
+Simeon Radivoev At least you included some clarification by stating, "rich people of power." Most subscribers to the theory of rich people being the commoners' enemies, never clarify any distinction between merely possessing wealth, as opposed to being greedy in regards to wealth or power, or even both. Merely being rich is not a sole qualification for being the commoners' enemy . . . for that includes people who are upper class with disposable wealth, yet they are an asset to their community rather than those who are power hungry. The enemy of the common people are the global elites for they have the real power, and their numerous minions, those who are rich, but are willing to play ball with the elites because they desire more power and/or the elites can easily blackmail them and then some! Yes, while practically every single major politician is an enemy of the people, let's not confuse the semi-wealthy with the insatiable power-hungry scum who are the real enemies. Being wealthy does not always translate into being an enemy of the people. Most millionaires (who the elites view as mere peasants) contribute in positive ways to their communities while not inflicting anymore harm than Joe Average. We must distinguish those who have power and wield it in a nefarious manner against the people, and those who simply have money and actually contribute to increasing the quality of life for the people in their respective communities. For the elites love to keep us divided (divide and conquer), because when we are too busy (falsely) blaming each other, and in turn, fighting each other, then we lack the time and the awareness to discover who are true enemies are. Without the capacity to discover our true enemies, we shall never unite to fight our real enemies. In this manner, our real enemies can continue their agenda against us without fear of significant discovery. If a crime has been committed, and then you find someone on which to place the blame and label as a criminal, then you stop looking for the criminal, regardless of whether or not the criminal is the guilty party. Likewise, we fail to look elsewhere for the cause behind our woes once we have been manipulated into believing that our woes are caused by this group or that group. This is an easy problem to solve, simply embed a QR code in the video. The QR code is generated by the main character on the video via an app. This QR code embeds all the metadata (location, date & time). For additional security you can have other people in the room also use the app that scans the QR code of the main character phone. This will allow for verification that the main character was at this place, and this time. Please let me know where you see holes in this solution. The QR code and meta data is stored on a blockchain.

@@criminalsaint9611 What other use does it have apart from entertainment? Deep fakes will erode an already fragile truth amongst people, governments and industries. Millions of people already have so little critical thinking skills that they believe the earth is flat and climate change isn't real. Think about what deep fakes can do, they can be used to smear or exonerate anyone from anything.
@@criminalsaint9611 So by that logic you should be allowed to purchase missiles. Just because other retards won't be personally responsible with WMD's why should you lose out when you're responsible.
Wars are being fought in cyberspace now. Look at how Russia influenced the US election, and meddled in Brexit. Look at how China are using the internet to force propaganda down peoples throats and change opinions in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Deepfakes are digital WMD's and not everyone should have access to them. I do not have faith in human psychology to overcome it.
@@criminalsaint9611 I didn't write "nuclear" missile. I wrote missle.
@@criminalsaint9611 If you were confused by WMD. Then you should know that the FBI classifies grenades as WMD's.
This talk was from July and it’s just now being posted?
Everyone should know it.
Step 0: Get an understanding of tensorflow, numpy and machine learning
Step 1: Implement an AE
Step 2: Train the AE for approximately 10kUSD or more using cloud GPUs
Step 3: Hope for the best
Considering that those three steps themselves require a lot of time and money, I doubt that people will be able to "simply create a deepfake on their phone".
Of course, this is an overexaggeration, however, the talk itself is not much better either.
Re: "time and money": weapons manufacture requires time and money, whether small arms or ICBMs. Are they not a threat to ordinary people?
Re: "do it on their phone": the smartphone you have today is cheaper and more powerful than anything needed to put men on the Moon or to build up the modern Internet. You don't think that existing technological barriers will eventually be overcome?
Trust the plan
Internet trolls and propagandists are loving this.
We now live in the *meme populism* times.
Democracy needs to adjust to the populism on social media !

"Law enforcers wont enforce laws they dony understand " yeah ok
TED become a good instrument. Well told Danielle
this conversation needed to be done in the 60s...
...catching up...will be harder, now, if not impossible...
as I see it...people have lost the art of critical thinking...
...an uphill battle, covered in oil...
...I'll have to leave this battle to the young...
They should create a easy tool that can detect deep fakes just like there are programs which can detect photoshopped pictures
I am learning deep faking.
Aaahhh.. Daniel Citron, why did you have to do this talk? Im afraid youre going to jinx us
we're not ready and we're all fucked
6:36 Oh no, don't take away the illusion of choice...
The truth will no longer be known,
To keep media truthful and not tabloid....a very tough responsibility!
There are already phone apps which can make such a video just with few touches.
well, yes, it sounds pretty nasty, but it will quickly lose its power to hurt. People will adjust to the fact that this sort of stunt is possible and will simply dismiss them as more "fake news".
With our evilness we are making a whip for ourselves. AI will come and kill us all.
Laws are not morality.
People will learn to not give a damn about everything xD
Exactly. I don't see it with bad eyes, humanity will be forced to evolve.

2019 A.D. - "We've got to sacrifice ourselves to change the weather!"
Here's a one-line summary of this 13 minute talk:"Deep fakes are bad".
This is a classic useless Ted talk: Point out a major intractable problem, and conclude with "we need to do something about it".
Computer Science student here. This is actually a pretty interesting tool to mess with but it's one of the few branches of my field I'm cautious of. The short of it is basically that it makes video unreliable and can be used for manipulation. There are also positive applications of course. The ones that come to mind are all about content creation. Movies, games, even amauture RUclipsrs you get the idea. I dislike her take on trying to use the law to restrict it's use, in practice it'll only cause harm to small time creators and the exceptionally stupid users who let themselves get caught (anyone with the skills should have the tech knowledge to cover their tracks)
Nice to see that even TED has caught on to this. I'm only surprised people didn't see this as a threat from the beginning!
Trump, Biden everyone we see on Tel-lie-vision the question is how comes they are allowed to expose it?
A REPUBLICAN democracy, to be accurate. Most people enjoy half truths and half measures.
I'm especially concerned about those horrendous deepfakes about jews.
You can at the moment spot a deep fake if you look carefully at things such as the mouth of the person.
It's an area that doesn't seem to always look right when a person speaks.
However, over time of course, this will improve.
On the flip side, there are people out there creating deep learning A.I that is able to spot deep fakes too so hopefully that will be of help when trying to determine if something is real or not!
Good thing they warned us about the mature content! LOL
Solving sexual privacy with increased surveillance? What? We don’t solve societal problems by telling tech companies how to control content. We don’t do it by empowering cops.

someone, It's an idiom. It defers to platitude terms like "peace," "democracy," "diversity" etc. that have no intrinsic meaning and are just by-words for "good versus bad." (Essentially Pavlovian behaviorism in a socio-linguistic sense.)
Yeah, It's essentially Kingdom Hearts "light, darkness, light" but for politics. Or tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MeaninglessMeaningfulWords
Within 1 minute, 'Men are the problem' yayyy.... 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Thats not what shes saying... deepfakes can be used by anyone regardless of gender, race, religion or political affiliation. People are the problem. Not the weapon. People kill people, guns are just the tool used to do it. This is the same. However males generally speaking are statistically more likely to be the ones doing such things (im a straight white cis male) the vast majority of males are just normal people. Violent crimes and criminal activity are the minority of our population but they seem to be the ones that define us
Thank you for all the great responses to my comment. Young lady don’t worry about me I was going to the hospital any way after I wrote comment ,but only because I work there I am not schizophrenic I am OK. The world, however is in deep Doo Doo unless the good guys fix it pretty soon. Trump and many around him would give their last breath.
What democracy? That even exists? Just think about it
AI can confront human perception very easily. Technology is evolving but the majority of ppl are still............. not even trying to.......
This only really affects big public figures and high profile entities, and they have ignored, trot upon, and milked the little man dry so I really find it hard to care

Yep, edge cases and fearmongering. Deepfaking is primarly used to put Keanu Reeves in Sesam Street songs and they are hilarious.

Really, a profession that has morphed into law as vehicle for seeking out profit, versus a profession for doing things like she is suggesting - reasonable and moral changes..... who's she trying to kid here? Really? Seriously? Lawyers, the ones where as soon as there might be a reasonable and wise law, scramble to find a way around the law and profit from the scrambling. Those people? Making laws to fix the problem. From the legal profession? Hilarious.
Terrifying prospect of this being used, especially for revenge on unsuspecting women. Imagine a Facebook profile picture being used for such nefarious purposes.
She says deep fake and conspiracy theorists in the one sentence. Get it yet?
RUclips recommendations, are you hinting something?
Woah...
What this feminist needs to understand is that all you have to do is use an AI and you can detect whether a video has been deepfaked, so this video is completely irrelevant
She makes some great suggestions for deepfakes
Minute thirty in and she claims gender and minority status makes it special... ok then. I'm neither so this doesn't apply to me I guess.
This endless race and gender framing is the quickest way to lose an audience.
Shame... maybe she had a point but I prefer not to listen to bigots once they make it known.
I've heard very similar talks by men and they had much better like/dislike ratios, even when talking about the very same case.
The incels among TED subscribers are getting out of control.
To be fair, literally 50% of the talk time was dedicated to "Bad thing exists ... Women Most Affected" trope.
If someone were trying to sell you on the dangers of nuclear weapons, would they waste as much time blathering on about how it _specifically_ affected women? I don't think Edward Teller ever did that. (A female scientist might've!)
if not-so-undermined democracy gives you trump you make lemonade
Sexual life should be private period. Anyone who helps to spread true or fake videos of public or regular people should be punished. People who post such videos or pictures should be shamed and pay substantial fee.
Sexual life should be packaged for public entertainment consumption. Deep fake should be so ubiquitous that everyone is aware of its existence and is not so easily fooled by it.
