Jackson paints a beautiful picture of an America from the past thatI have never seen but imagine affectionately. Superb story, superbly narrated, and as always with Jackson, disquietning.
Oh. But it is their property, they stay at their cottage and mind their own business and the locals get some extra business the longer they stay. So the locals killing them seems ridiculous. If they didn't want them there why would they mess with their car? That only makes it so they have to stay. Their kids would eventually show up looking for them.
Such a curious story. The tension slowly building but to what . It's like a conspiracy against them from the whole village. Like they are not wanted after labor Day.
@Sarah Samaria tbh _nobody_ is wanted after Labor Day. Imho, I'd rather see nobody _before_ and _after_ labor day.. don't even want a card on my birthday.. best holiday gift I could ever receive is being left tf alone.
Yes, it's obvious that the locals prefer them to leave for some reason. Murdering them for staying longer on their own property seems ridiculous. The locals do get extra business that they would not get otherwise the longer they stay. Their kids would come looking for them, so idk how the town could get away with killing them. Odd...
I love the conversational tone. As someone from a small tourism town that gets flooded with city people come summer and Christmas I find the story a bit funny really with the whole "nope. Can't deliver it. No money in it. You gotta do it yourself." Attitude of the townspeople
I moved to FL forty years ago from the UK, and I’ve never really encountered the kind of conflicts in this story between city and country folk. Having said that, I know that they exist in many places.
I love how everyone already knew the Alison's were staying on. My FIL was from a small town. He called that knowledge "the drums", said he never figured out how news and gossip got around so fast.
I guess the Allisons were not supposed to be there, and so for whatever reason the locals try to get rid of them. It’s like a child seeing its teacher in a grocery store. The teacher is out of place and not supposed to be there!
27:08 oooh, I love that image! Great reading & intriguing tale. Thank you. New sub.. I couldn't believe my luck! To find another audiobook channel, I feel like I've won the lottery.

Ambiguous endings always send the newbs into fits. Much like real life, sometimes we dont get answers and our imaginations are left to run wild. If you want everything spelled out for you, try one of those formulaic suspense mystery novels like James Patterson or something
Beautifully read, well written but too ambiguous and non-conclusion for me. I like a story with sufficient confidence to leave an element of doubt and speculation but with an end that doesn’t make me rewind hoping I’d missed something crucial.

The people get more business the longer they stay. It sounds like they stay at their place and mind their own business so what does it matter if they stay? The locals killing them seems ridiculous for many reasons. Their kids know where they are and would eventually come and see why they weren't hearing from them. Hmm...
It's a horror story. It's about the slow realization of what's happening. We don't know if the town's people are going to kill the Allisons, that's left open. The story is about the realization of their doom, however it may happen.
One of her very best stories I think. The slowly rising unease turning to fear is masterfully done.
Id never heard of Shirley jackson until recently and i xant get enough

The eeriness of the story is so subtle. Shirley Jackson is the mistress of the left turn
She LOVED to play with the hallways of the human mind, yes
This was how it was in my youth, you didn't mess with the year round folks routines.

Gripping. strange story. Love the narration and the visuals. Thank you. Windy!
Picture of St. Peter’s Village! I live near there, the Bakery is a favorite coffee spot of mine.
Great story and well narrated and I’m very glad to discover how many other great stories this channel has for me to listen to.
Can't wait for this Shirley Jackson!
That was powerful.
Very engaging.
Thank you!

Finally, a new channel recommend that really suits me! Thanks for these classics.

But Not Shirley Jackson’s ‘Lottery’!
Careful about winning those lotteries! They aren't always what they appear! (Little in-joke, there, for those in the know!)
😀Love Shirley Jackson's stories. Thanks. and subscribed.
Kept me enthralled

You have a very good narration style and choice of stories.

LIFE AMONG THE SAVAGES FYI.
really good
One of Shirley's better short stories.
Frankly speaking I believe they are Ghost who refused to accept the fact they are dead.
Hmm...interesting theory.
I love the story.

Exactly. That's the beauty of the story. Your mind can come up with terrible things.
Wait!! That was the end?
So what happened?
Well I was just starting to look for more by this author when the reader said “the end”. What?
The Allisons are in trouble and it took them too long to realize it.
@@lauriewhittle5877 Not all stories by her have an abrupt end. Listen to the Lottery; that's got a very horrifying definite end.

They want them gone but they disable their car and their phone so they have no choice but to stay. I don't get it.

You aren't reading if you are listening to it.
Great story and reading. I much prefer the reader not doing different voices for characters, it doesn't work and is annoying
