- The Story of Cosmetics, released on July 21st, 2010, examines the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in our everyday personal care products, from lipstick to baby shampoo.
Produced with Free Range Studios and hosted by Annie Leonard, the seven-minute film by The Story of Stuff Project reveals the implications for consumer and worker health and the environment, and outlines ways we can move the industry away from hazardous chemicals and towards safer alternatives.
The film concludes with a call for viewers to support legislation aimed at ensuring the safety of cosmetics and personal care products.

Just because something is linked to cancer by a few scientists doesn’t mean it’ll actually cause cancer. That’s not how it works.
To be fair, a lot of "natural" cosmetics aren't any safer. They also take liberties with labelling.
She focused mainly on the ingredients in a lot of the standard brands, didn't tap into much on the scaremongering and mislabelling with so called "natural brands."

Wish we had an update to this as it's 10 years old
I am 44 years old and am always mistaken for in my 20s-30s, the sister to my 22 year old son(oldest of 3). I haven't used anything but completely natural moisturizers for over 20years after a bad reaction to a L'Oreal product. At the moment I use Shea butter, which I love. I only use diluted essential oils for perfume and mixed with bi carb for deodorant. I use a mostly plant based shampoo and body wash but my next step is growing my own 😊 ! There's a herb called soapwort, that can be used for all washing needs 💚🌿🌱 and I make my own cleaning products for the house. I highly recommend cutting out chemicals as best we can. +shraddha pawar Stop buying the products, with out demand they go off the shelves, I'm not contributing to keeping these things off the shelves, I don't buy these things or use them, not because they're dangerous but because they're a waste of time, if you've studied chemistry you know how inefficent they are anyways.
@@ashleyashleym2969 we need to stop placing blame on people choices, all people do not have the same situations and the same access...there are many systems put into place that cause this across the board. It is about corporations putting toxic chemicals, (known to kill and pollute) into products and government policies allowing them to be on the shelves in the first place, the unethical practice of putting profits over people, by industry who’s priority should be to not cause harm, and elected officials who are supposed to make policies that are in the best interest of their constituents. Individuals cannot “shop their way to safety”.

I feel very strongly about this stuff...happy to see I'm not the only one who has realized what horrible ingredients are killing us slowly and softening our skin at the same time.
Even though I've been in the appropriate frame of mind for a while, this film is still amazing because it taught me things I didn't already know. Greetings, Annie! I want to let everyone know that you can either buy natural items (a good place to start is an organic store like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's) OR you can produce your own things for dirt-cheap prices! Face wash, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, a few stain-removal items, and bug spray are already homemade by myself. And I still have a ton more to experiment with!
I wish there were references to back up these clams. I mean, they sound believable, but that doesn’t make it true. Saying scary big words don’t mean something is bad for you. If these things are true, I’d just really appreciate references from valid sources. Without them, this doesn’t prove anything, it’s just hear say. :/

More of these videos need to be made public to creat awareness on what is contained in our cosmetics and also to educate us on the chemicals in our cosmetics . This can also go well by enlightening us thoroughly on good cosmetics.
If the "natural" cosmetic products were required to list every ingredient on the label it would be 100 pages long. Cosmetics made of natural products including plant oils and extracts are still made up of chemicals, but they contain 1000's of different chemicals, many of which are known to be "toxic" and linked to cancer. Just because a chemical is naturally occurring vs man made does not mean it is safer. Everything is a chemical.
I read what chemists write about these additives such as sodium laureth sulphate and they are safe. Health shops will say anything to get sales. It's big business nowadays and very expensive.
Governments will only act if consumers demand they act. But the vast majority doesn't wanna know ( blissful ignorance ) or even care. Like someone said ( i have the right to get lung cancer - so don't preach to me )
I am so much healthier since I stopped using chemicals on and in my body! Never knew that plain vinegar works as deodorant! WOW!

I've been on the right mindset for a while, but this video is still great because it still provided information I still didn't know. Thanks, Annie! I want to share with everyone that you can buy natural products (organic stores like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's is a good place to start) OR you can make your own products for cheap, cheap, cheap! I've already made face wash, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner , a couple of stain remover products, & bug spray. And I still got a lot more to try out!

Loved this video. Super informative and loved the animation. I've been on the no-poo (no shampoo) method for over a year now and stopped using conventional deodorants for almost a year. I have been able to find natural methods that work much better than any store bought products I've experienced in the past. Slowly making a transition with everything else now :)

Nina Ados I use all natural shampoo bars at the moment and followed by an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse as my "conditioner". I use Chagrin Valley's natural shampoo bars. check out their website! :)

great video... people here in India still use natural shampoo like 'shikakai',etc. and they are good but even they are getting contaminated. other alternatives are using soapnut fruits soaked overnight and using the foam next morning to wash the hair. people here in southern India (like Kerala) are known for great traditional herbal treatments and the southern people of India usually oil their hair with pure herbal stuff before washing their hair. so they are known for beautiful,dense thick hair here. apart from that proper food intake helps hair growth.

I have been and I am still am in the path of educating and encouraging people to learn how to make their own natural skincare at home and/or learn how to read the ingredients label to buy a genuine natural non-toxic product. Not only you need to educate yourself and realize how much irony there is in the cosmetic and food industry is horrendous
It's actually ironic that she says that her dry shampoo contains sodium laureth sulfate, that's the thing shampoos and other products like some toothpastes and showergel, makes it foamy. But dry shampoo doesn't need this.

Great video! It's so important for people to understand how their cosmetic choices (and household products) are influencing their health. Most people are totally disassociated from this and assume that because these products are so abundant they must be safe, which is simply not true. It's time to throw out the toxic products, boycott big producers and making better and healthier choices!
You guys should do a story on fashion or the garment industry. Breaching using harmful chemical is an unknown fact for lots of people. Good job on telling about the cosmetic industry.

Thanks for taking the time to inform us (my wife and myself) about the toxic chemical found in common products. It's crazy to think that those in position to protect us are doing little, to nothing, to do the logical thing, which is to take these deadly chemicals out of our American Market. :/ God help us!
Besides advocating for change of laws regarding using toxic chemicals in our products, we as a consumer can also opt to buy from businesses that make natural products such as Calia Shampoo, Honest Beauty by Jessica Alba, 100% Pure. Because when we buy these safer options, we create more demand for such products and less demand for toxic big brand names like P&G etc. We, as a consumer, potential buyer have the POWER to change the industry. We just need to educate more people and spread the word! :)))
Absolutely. I agree 100% our power to effect change is in how we vote with our dollars. Unfortunately, we clearly need more education, because these brands you mention aren't even 100% clean- they are still utilizing toxic ingredients and marketing themselves as safe. It's frustrating! I spend my time educing on ingredients for this exact reason.
This is why I chose to start my small & local skincare products. I know what I add in my products and I know what I put on my skin! It's really not that complicated. BUT most of the clients want creams and lotions that smell like a perfume... that ain't natural, honey.
In the video (around 2:40 min), it mentions being tested for toxicity levels for things like lead, mercury etc., can you let me know where you would get tested for something like that and how it works? Thanks.
+Pamela Stewart I would imagine you'd be able to do it in a hospital although you'd probably need a referral from your doctor unless of course you were in the hospital and sick and they request it for you.

I joined the No-Poo movement a couple of years ago and I wish I didn't stop. The first month was disgusting, I'll admit. But after my hair restored and I went back to regular shampoo my hair is damaged.
Now I have to start over and my makeup is used and gone. My beauty supplies: Soap, eggs, baking soda, vinegar, and lip gloss.

Do your research before you comment. There is no reason for COSMETICS to be tested on animals OR humans. The EU has already banned cosmetic animals testing. The US is considering doing the same. And China may be following as well, even though they are the worst animal rights violaters on the planet. Innoxa which was founded in 1928 has NEVER tested on animals and is still around and many more cosmetic houses including TARTE, BH Cosmetics, Paul Mitchel, The Body Shop and a myriad of others. The worst offender is L'Oreal and its affiliated brands, like Lancome, Yves St Laurent, Armani, Biotherm Kielhs, Maybelline all test on animals. So unless you are a "speciesist" and when you submit a comment make sure you are informed first on the NEED for COSMETIC animal testing before posting an imbecilic statement.
f you think those animals wouldnt do the same to us if they could? you should stop caring about lower life forms(especially those deemed to be "least concern" like rats ect) and care about human problems

Totally agree with you.. Just because animals don't have a voice does not mean we can be cruel to them for our own advantage. If someone thinks that animals are lower life forms then they are oblivious to the significant impact it has on evolution and human life forms. Without bees for instance we could not survive. So in this in mind, we should respect all living beings with love and acceptance.

The last time I used haircolor was March 2015. I was coloring my hair every week and a half just to keep the roots covered... it was pure insanity. I am so much happier, my hair is MUCH healthier and I have saved a ton of money not being a slave to color. :)

This is well done, and it looks like she put out others. On this subject, she should dig a little deeper and see where the cosmetic companies dump their waste, or check to see if their processes in obtaining the toxic ingredients are safe, etc. Let's not stop at looking at just the product, look at the while company and their practices.

This video is not scientific. So frustrating to hear random people freak out and singularly exclaim that some chemical is """"Linked"""" to cancer. With no discussion of in what context a chemical is carcinogenic, no explanation of at what ratio of PPM does this chemical become dangerous, and no explanation of the purposes for things beyond causing cancer. This is seriously lowest common denominator reporting. I loved the video on Bottled Water, but can't deal with conspiracy theories about Chemical X is linked to cancer even though it has a million industrial uses and only is cancerous if you directly consume 6,000,000 grams per day. Who do you think is developing these chemicals? Scientists. This is not accomplishing anything beyond scare tactics, which you have railed against in other videos.

Isn't the point that why should we even need those chemicals in our products to begin with? It shouldn't be a discussion of how much is safe... why would we risk it? And if they do want to use those chemicals, why not put a warning label on the bottle, saying don't use 6,000,000 grams of this a day because at that point it could be harmful?

This video is presenting information the same way P&G advertise their products, out of context and lack of details which is very misleading. They are not telling the whole stories here. They are not providing the data here. Yes, some ingredients may cause cancer in rats when they are fed at a almost 100% concentration, but they don't cause cancers in rats when they are fed at the concentration in your cosmetics which is much smaller, and I sure hope you are not eating your makeup. Feeding rats 20% milk protein gives them tumor and feeding them 5% milk proteins turns the tumor off. Also do you know bananas are radio active, whaaaa? See how this information albeit correct can be very misleading? Learn how to read the ingredient list. Then you will be the boss of your bathroom counter.

Each individual product might have a low dose of each harmful chemical, but when you combine that with all the other products people use daily that also contain harmful chemicals, it adds up.
Also, no, people are not eating their makeup. But in the case of lipstick, you're licking a little bit of it off every time you lick your lips.
Screw the system or expecting the government to fix it. Make your own soaps and shampoos youself just like we did before the 50's. It's chem7cal free and cheap!!

When all is said and done, more is said than done.
It is true there are bound to be certain hazardous chemicals in the products that we use daily. But most companies are responsible and have conformed to standards acceptable to human consumption. As consumers, we have to be informed before we try a new product.

These so-called carcinogenic, neurotoxic and and reproductive toxic "chemicals" are not at all what they are being portrayed in this video. As a reproductive biologist, these "toxins" or "chemicals" are applied directly to cells under conditions very different to applying them to your hair, face or skin. This goes the same for all cells that are examined including other gametes, brain cells and body cells. If there were longitudinal studies examining the carcinogenic effect of these so-called "toxic" cosmetics they would result in no significant carcinogenic, neurotoxic, or reproduction problems.
Even though it's internet and we can't trust what we see online bla bla bla, this woman IS fighting for good things. Go write negative comments elsewhere.. on video of people that aren't trying to change the world in a good way.

Always a grain of salt! But if you look at the ingredients in, for example your deodorant or shampoo, you'll find that it's true + doing some research and get different sources.

The only thing I don't agree with is saying "it's not our fault" because it is for blindly thinking the government is looking out for our best interest. We are responsible for our choices & being ignorant to what's going on behind the scenes is just one of the problems. When we get informed, we have the opportunity to make a choice to be a part of the problem or a part of the solution...If nobody speaks up, it just continues to ensue...
I can use skin whitening cream all I want, no need to shame those who use it. Not all users of it do it out if pressure or a "standard", most of us in europe choose to use them on our own to better reflect our own chosen beauty norms. I naturally was drawn to super pale skin since I was a child and desired it since. Also korean style whitening creams aren't as outdated and harmful as, say, American or Phillipines skin bleach. Smh...

We are living better because of chemistry, the way we get products that do as intended is chemistry, and its the same way we get safe products. Don't tell me "its because there are chemicals" everything is chemicals a rose is as natural as ricin. I get the point of this video, and I do agree, but that bit on "better living through chemistry" got a little on my nerves.

I think we have many more options in natural products since this video was made (great job BTW). We can really vote with our $ - where we choose to spend it! Buy from makers, producers, farmers whenever possible.

I like this video, and the big ideas and points made. In my sustainability classes we watch a lot of these videos, so thanks for all your work. However, I disagree with your statement that the words "natural" or "organic" don't mean much on cosmetic labels. And your point that consumers don't make a lot of change in the market, only big businesses and government does. I think that creates a mindset that can spread and make a lot of people feel hopeless or make them think that if they give up on trying to purchase the "right" products, that it won't matter. In fact, consumers have a major impact on markets and the more we buy and lobby for products that are truly organic and natural - and we can tell by using (the amazing) EWG's Skin Deep website to learn more about our products and see how they score. I hope that in the future you consider the great impact consumers can have, and the way that the videos and ideas affect mindsets.

My little sister has a learning disability. I know people may not care about all this toxic mumbo jumbo, but the truth is autism is getting closer to home. And it SUCKS. Autism is the worst thing that has happened to my family. I just wish it didn't exist anymore. I don't care how it came about, I just wish it was gone.
Believe me, Annie knows her stuff. She did a lot of research into this. She also collaborated with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics which maintains a database of their own about which cosmetic products are safe and also reached out to scientists who know the ingredients.

@Ashycakes this is true , my grandma got cancer and she atributes it to stress. However its important to avoid cancer causing substances in cosmetics as well, if you want to decrease your risk.

She's not complaining about electronics themselves, just they way they are made and how toxic they are! It's true, years ago things were made to last with much higher quality.
