  • Behind the Glitter - Child Labor in Mica Mining | ENDEVR Documentary
    Watch 'East Germany's Stolen Children' here: • East Germany's Stolen ...
    Mica: it’s the common ingredient in cosmetic products such as nail polish, foundation, mascara, and lipstick. It’s what gives them their luminosity, making them responsible for the fortune of major cosmetic groups like L’Oréal, Lancôme, Dior, and Chanel.
    Unknown to its hundreds of millions of consumers is that most of it is filled with “dirty mica”, extracted using antiquated methods, close to slavery, in one of the poorest regions of the world: Jarkhand, India. Here, under the constant threat of landslides and toxic dust, children dig through the earth with their bare hands.
    Journalist Brando Barenzelli has traced the mica supply chains from the lost mines of the Indian countryside to the laboratories of major brands in Europe. He films the 8-year-old children who collect mica and the mine owners and exporters who turn a blind eye to the deplorable working conditions. He also uncovers the strategies used at each stage of the supply chain to whitewash the origins of mica. Back in Paris and Europe, he confronts cosmetics manufacturers with the findings of his investigation.

    Unknown to its hundreds of millions of consumers is that most of the luminous and glittery cosmetics are made with "dirty mica", extracted using antiquated methods, close to slavery, in one of the poorest regions of the world: Jarkhand, India. Here, under the constant threat of landslides and toxic dust, children dig through the earth with their bare hands.
    It’s time we found out and demand changes. It just can’t be that we can 3D print a Mars landscape but cannot make cosmetics without exploiting and killing children. Seriously people.

    Excellent documentary on mica, child labor & even the heath of adults mining. Heartbreaking to see children as young as four digging in the dirt to gain a small amount of mica. $500.00 a ton, unimaginable and channel sells the smallest compact or container with mica in it for up to $75.00 in Canada. Shameful! Thank for journalists bringing this to the world 's attention.

    $500/ton. Imagine the labor required to produce it. Frustrating to repeatedly see the people who work the hardest and bear the greatest risk in industries continually being so rediculous my underpaid. Wish I had a solution to this pervasive phenomenon

    I know exactly what mica is. There was a defunct gold mine near our home in the woods and I played with mica there. It's beautiful but if it's breathed in over a period of time, it can be deadly. I wear no make up at all not because of mica but cosmetics are very bad for healthy skin!

      yes obviously there are Non-Profits, that work with these families especially
      BUT it is always the best to aid or give alms to needy people that are living around you,
      the people that you KNOW are having difficulties
      help the REAL people around you not oceans across via shady orgs
      do help them too IF you actually visit those countries and SEE those poor people yourself

    Child labour isn't always "super bad". Depends on the situation oftens it's their only chance to get money for education etc. If the jobs wouldn't be there, they would starve because they had no way of making income. There are even documentaries asking several children about it and they even are proud that they are able to afford their own schools and books because without, the sick old parents often won't or can't afford this and the children will never have any chances in life. But again it depends on the situation . But generalization without seeing the ACTUAL problems (issues infrastructures and such of the country itself) who makes this even all possible but pointing at the "bad big industries" is always just ridiculuos.

    • @senerzen
      @senerzen 3 месяца назад +9

      Interesting point that made me think. But at the end, I strongly disagree.
      This is like the old mentality where serfs are told to be grateful to their lord for giving them a land to work on. Who gave the land to the lord? Thanks to the king! Who gave it to the king? Thanks to God! "And who are you the little serf to question almighty GOD with your tiny little human brain?"
      In reality, a king was just the biggest warlord, the biggest mafia boss whose ancestors took the land by force, also called armed robbery, and serfs were supposed to feel grateful for that.
      India, together with China, produced almost half of world GDP for 2 thousand years. That is, until western capitalist private companies with their private armies came to invade. East India Company would produced opium in India and illegally sell it to Chinese peasants, extracting all the value they could for 200 years. And now, Indian children are supposed to be grateful for big western companies giving them a job?

    • @borednurse907

      @@senerzenI agree. Twisting things to make it seem ok or even amazing that children are having to work is twisted. Children should be learning not to “laboring.” Attempting to justify it is disturbing.

    • @entrepreneursfinest
      @entrepreneursfinest 2 месяца назад

      Doesn't have to have exploitation. More people just make more profit that way. If micah was only found in the U.S., capitalism would take it from the ground with large machinery and separate it out and you'd pay a fraction more for your makeup. Or you may even pay less.
      These children and women are given pennies. Then the purchaser sells it to another regional guy who marks it up substantially and has it sorted and graded and sold to another guy who marks it up again and then sells it to another who then sells it to Macy's who then have a product made and mark it up again. Macy's would find a place to get their minerals regardless, but it's there and it's a little cheaper so that's what they go with.
      On the flip side - if it weren't for capitalism then that market wouldn't exist and those people would be starving instead of working in the mine. Capitalism is like a kitchen knife; in the hands of Gordon Ramsey it's gonna do great things; in the hands of Lorena Bobbit though ...

    Many Indians have no Idea about this. India is disconnected like never before. Urban middle class and above can't even imagine the hardships our own people go through for belonging to a weaker economic section. We are growing like cyberpunk, big megacities with affluent middle class surrounded by not so privilaged people.
    This inequality will skyrocket in the upcoming decades. 🥲
