I’m a 78 YO retired guy in the middle of writing my memoir. Your video is crisp, concise, and right on. I’m in the fourth reading of Mary Karr, need I say more. :) In closing, I think I have found my voice!
1 your story by Joanne Fedler 2 shimmering images by Lisa Norton 3 still writing by Dani Shapiro (one of the most successful memoirist) 4 art of memoir by Marry Karr (also a major memoirist) 5 you were born to write Kelly Notaras
So glad I watched this video! I just bought Mary Karr’s “Art of Memoir” yesterday, and I’m going to also pick up your book as well so when I’m done writing mine, I have an idea how to get it published. Thank you!
Oh my word I can hardly believe I have found your channel! I have just landed my first major biography/memoir contract and it’s daunting. I won Joanne Fedler’s Memoir writing course in 2017 and have written one memoir and a edited (rewritten really) one since. Thanks so much for the mentorship here. I’m going to need all the help I can get. I’ll be in Aus for interviews this year. Hopefully I will connect with Joanne.
Such a good video!! I put off my memoir for a decade to write and teach on my first book and your video just gave me the nudge I needed to COMMIT to writing my healing memoir. 🤸♂️ Feeling inspired!! Thank you, Kelly!! 💗
These book suggestions were so great! I just got the first three on audio books and have listened while preparing my Thanksgiving meal. I so appreciate the recommendations. You are so genuine. Great books 📚 🙏❤️
Hi My memoir is going slow, because I have so many things that need attention, but to do that I’d be writing forever , I have to learn to cut it down, or do more stories, about my / our life, I know it will be a memoir thanks Kelly, x 🌹
Love this video thank you! I read mary and dani’s books years ago but not writing my first memoir and going back to reread them. I also loved “On Writing” of course and in the midst of reading “writing down the bones”. Thank you again for the month of memoir content! I’m 20K pages into my book after ten days- due to having a good outline and using scrivener!!
Hi Kelly, I've been watching a lot of your videos today - thank you! I have one question: do you know of a place to go where specific published memoirs were dissected in order to understand how they were structured? I think that type of thing would be very helpful for people that struggle with how to structure their writing. I've written 70,000 words without any structure. I've read some best selling memoirs but it hasn't helped me to figure out the structure. There are many ways to do it, from everything I've read, but it would be great to focus on a couple of published books to actually understand it better. Thank you!
Hi there! It sounds like you would benefit from creating a retroactive outline. We have set of three different outline templates that might help: resources.knliterary.com/3-Classic-Book-Outlines -- The KN Literary Team
Thank you so much, Kelly. I have your wonderful book, and will definitely get the others. I am grateful for all of your tips and guidance. The 2 most outstanding memoirs that I've read this year are "BECOMING" by Michelle Obama and "THE CHOICE.... Embrace the Possible" by Dr Edith Eva Eger.
We are so glad you plan to get our recommended books! And that you found the video helpful! Those recommendations are also great! There are so many fantastic pieces of inspiration out there. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great question! Dani Shapiro is also a good example. Each of her books focuses on a different theme, event, or transformation. This video might help: ruclips.net/video/ybHdUBt1vbA/видео.htmlsi=HamxDfoz1aAfuKYx
If you self publish is it still necessary to reach a certain word count for your memoir? I keep reading that the average is between 75,000-100,000 but I’m not sure if mine will be over 50,000
Hi my name is Chesaingo Alvarez I’ve been wanting to write a book since 2013 can you please explain to me besides writing my book how do I make it, publish, ghost writer, directions of how to do everything?
We recommend that you start by getting a copy of Kelly's book "The Book You Were Born to Write." It will walk you through the process, step by step. You can also read our blog posts that address many common questions here: knliterary.com/blog/
Even though Mary Karr calls Mr Rogers (❤️) “infuriatingly saccharine”, her book is a terrific resource. As is yours, Kelly. Thanks for all that you share. 😊

That's wonderful to hear, Gerald! Wishing you all the best!
How is the memoir going?
Read, reflect, write describes my progress over the last ten months. Joan Didion’s work consumes me at the moment.
Thanks so much Kelly. Already have and love your book, and I've just added the other four to my Amazon wish list. I feel I have a memoir to write!
Yay! We hope the books get your juices flowing with your perfect memoir!

Hi Tammie! It might help to start with the 100 Moments exercise: resources.knliterary.com/Your-100-Moments-Exercise
Writing the memoir is one thing. Having people care to read it in the first place is another.
Absolutely. Working with an editor to craft your story in a compelling way and building a platform are also important elements. Thanks for commenting!
Can you give information on how to write a memoir that involves a dog?
