That’s how it is in the army. The paper pushers consistently “forget” to fill out papers or lose your documents… that’s why I make 3 copies of each thing I hand them.
I feel his pain I been dealing with the the VA crap for twenty years so I understand his pain. Am glad he didn't give up. Some weaker mind would have taken the easy way out.
There's no honor in being a shill for the military industrial complex. "WOW you killed civilians in a poor country, amazing". He should be ashamed and everyone supporting this criminal should be too.
He literally lost 15 years of respect that could have gotten him a good job and access to things that would have benefit him and his family..... LAWSUIT!
If cops in Uvalde can DECIDE to wait for an hour before saving kids from a terrorist attack with an automatic rifle, paper pushers & governmental beaurocracy can DECIDE to wait 15 years to fix an "error".
I totally agree find those responsible and have them pay for restitution for the past 15 years, better yet have those responsible be dishonorably discharged with no benefits what so ever
It did not take them 15 years to fix the error. He waited almost 13 years to petition to have the paperwork fixed and then it was fixed.(2 years is still to long) Why did he wait so long?
@GYPSY KING FURY wrong answer this should have never happened. we treat our veterans so poorly even now its a shame to all people who serve the country
“Isn’t that amazing??? On Veterans Day???……”. No. It is pretty disgusting how the veterans are treated. He has pictures, testimony and etc and still had to fight to get his “honor” back. Shame on the military to treat these young men like throwaways.
@ Shawn Kay Agreed. Unfortunately that comes from lack of leadership in command. They set the tone to a humanitarian approach to the enemy and the place you are invading or to a free for all which is what we saw inmost of the ME theatre. Then, it is up to the individuals to exercise their morale, or lack thereof.
It’s so sad to see a man in tears for getting the things he should’ve had 15 years ago for his service. With how large the US military is, this kind of stuff probably happens a lot more than you’d think.
What's maddening about this is that if the military wanted, they could have corrected this mistake a week or two after it was found. When an agency wants something done it gets done, when it's requested from the outside it takes months and in this case years.
The U.S. military is not big only 0.01% join the military. Records like that get dripped like that are lack of the civilians that run the out processing system. They need to be held accountable for mistakes. They literally fo over your DD214 with you to make sure nothing was missed as your getting out. This guys case was different because he was discharge due to misconduct should've been a General discharge and he should've been treated for his PTSD not thrown out and given to the savages at the VA. Bring awareness to people about veterans. PLEASE 22 VET KILL THEMSELVES EVERY DAY. They don't feel like anyone give a dam what they did. Everyone that has never seen combat all still has a normal mind can complain about anything. If a vet complains it's time to listen he ain't complaining for no reason.
Absolutely shameful we let things like this happen to men like this. I personally apologize to this young man on behalf of all the Americans who let him down. He deserved better and we failed him. I hope we do better in the future because this young man gave his all without question and we sh!t all over him for it. Fix the broken system!!!
@@ChristopherGray00 your right but just because you don't like their reasons doesn't mean that there weren't any. And I'm not talking about what reasons the mainstream media gave. There's always reasons and motives, and you might not always like them or approve but nevertheless they happen. 🤷♂️
I hate that comment. He didn’t “get his honor back”. He always had it, and the men who served with him knew it. He was simply tossed under the bus, as the military always does. But he is now recognized for the world to see what he did. His honor is his own!
I’m in the Navy right now and seeing this just rages me seeing this man go through all that pain and mistreatment. I’m happy to see his hardwork finally paid off and he’s at peace. What's really sad is that the community labeled him as a liar and deserter and the army refused to look up is official records when his unit was deployed to Iraq, giving him back his benefits isn't enough pain and suffering he endured for 15 years, it's really disgusting, they should find whoever is responsible for this screw up and have him or her pay restitution for the past 15 years
Will mistakes do happen? Typically when you are discharged, they have an hour or so to go over your DD214 ( 215 ) before the final discharge date. Sounds like that was missed, and it should not need 15 years to resolve it. That was how it was when I discharged back in the mid 90s. BTW the DD215 is a supplement, that ammends the DD214 and what's filed for missing time, rank, training, awards, recommendations,etc... To all other vets if you run across any red tape with veterans affairs, use your representatives and especially if you have one who is a veteran. This will speed up any removals and obstacles when it comes to red tape. What I do not understand while sitting here looking at my DD214, I had to sign it. So how come he didn't see these errros when(before) he signed his?
Typical government procedure. They are completely incompetent yet certain people seem to want them in charge of everything. If you want to see what socialism/big government that democrats push for just look at the institutions the government is in charge of. The US postal service, the DMV, the VA, the IRS, and think about all the headaches you go through dealing with those people when you need help or need something done and imagine that with your healthcare, insurance, bank, shopping, child care, schooling, internet provider, etc. Yea no thanks I'll vote for the party trying to keep the government out of as much as possible. Small government = less complications
@Dave Chappelle He got an honorable discharge. A 15 year appeal process is ridiculous. Especially considering the photos with spent shell casings in Iraq, with smoke coming out of Saddam Hussein's sons' home. I don't know how much closer to a smoking gun one can get. The fact that his entire unit didn't get their medals for 15 years makes me question what makes the Army this far out of touch with reality. What was the Army smoking? I have met in Mexico a USMC veteran of the Iraq war with PTSD that couldn't get help, because he was afraid of abuse for seeking help and loss of income from reserves. I gave him the card of a psychiatrist in Mexico who I knew is a good and compassionate person, told him he could pay in cash, and there'd be no records in the USA. It really isn't fair for the US military to use people to kill and be killed and punish them if their mind is shattered as a result. Just because you don't get PTSD doesn't mean others don't. There is no Purple Heart awards for PTSD, but these injuries still deserve care. This veteran was denied care. www.defense.gov/ask-us/faq/Article/1774765/can-service-members-with-post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd-receive-the-purple/

My Dad served in the Navy active duty for 12 yrs. Afterwards, he served in the Air National guard. Later, he spent another 18 yrs or so in the Naval Reserves. When it came time to apply for Military retirement, the US Government "lost" 10 or 12 years of his total service time and denied him retirement benefits. My Dad had kept the pay stubs and was able to prove he served the time and had proof he was paid for serving. It took about 5 yrs for him to get his retirement benefits. Unfortunately, he died of cancer a couple of years later. A cancer which was suspected to be related to exposure to asbestos while serving in the Navy. The final insult was when the Military grave marker provided... had the incorrect rank. It took my Step-mother about 5 yrs to "prove" he had achieved the rank he had before retiring. The military grave marker finally arrived... and they put the wrong date of death. It took my Step-mother another 1+ years to get a new military grave marker made. So, my Dad will finally have a military grave marker with the correct information on his grave for the 7th anniversary of his death.

@Hernando Malinche what your comment supposed to mean? I can guarantee you that if your country was under Taliban rule that you would be begging western forces to come liberate your country. He also didnt botch anyone's paper work in Iraq making sure they don't get recognition for what they did so once again I don't know how he got "a taste of what he did".
@Hernando Malinche first of all, I didn't do anything. But what is your country? And what war are you refering to? Not all western interventions have been on the up and up. But Saddam Hussein was a brutal dictator and his son Uday Hussein was much more evil, brutal and vicious then his father. Then the Taliban came in and we're cutting off people's hands off for stealing bread.
@Hernando Malinche first, when the Iraq war started, I wasn't old enough to vote. But even then, western politicians will say they are going to do one thing, get into power and do the opposite. So even if your voting for a good policy, you may have the rug pulled out from you. The citizens actually have no direct control over what the government does. I will agree with you that sadly, Iraq was a lot more stably ran under Saddam. But the world cant afford to have evil like that. And if Udday ever got into power, the suffering from the citizens would have been the worst the world has seen. The western countries absolutely messed up by not rebuilding by forming a non corrupt and stable government and not just leave. They really should have did what America did the Japan in WW2. They ran the whole country for quiet a while and changed the culture and standards. But because people complain about that so much these days, they didn't want to force a government on the country. When in reality, western forces should have set up a western government there for 20 years, make it stable and then hand the keys over once everything is in place. I think if you are going to go to war like that, then you should be expected to set up a stable government and way of life. But me as a Canadian, I really have no direct control on one iota of what was done in Iraq and Afghanistan. Like I said, I wasn't even old enough to vote when the war started. The western countries absolutely did need to take out these regimes, they sadly went about it the wrong way.
The photos this man took was more than enough to prove he served in Iraq. I can't believe his CO did not put this in writing. I'm glad his DD214 went from dishonorable to honorable discharge thank you for your service.
That change on his DD214 is the biggest thing. It makes no sense that it would show "dishonorable". Even if he only spent 6 months in the military, was on light duty the whole time handing out basketballs at the gym, and was released by a medical board, that is still worth an honorable discharge. You only get a dishonorable for gross misconduct. Even being a malcontent that keeps losing a stripe to the Commanding Officer is not enough to get you a dishonorable, you're basically a felon in the military if you get that (literally, you're committing crimes like rape or armed robbery). Maybe with no credit for his Iraq deployments, it appeared that he only served a few months, so the paperwork clerk figured he had to be getting kicked out and threw on 'dishonorable' as an assumption. Even that is a big stretch, being a discipline case generally gets you a lighter 'other-than-honorable' discharge. Dishonorable is like a bad-conduct discharge, you pretty much have to be serving time in the brig to get that. No awards shown and no credit for time deployed sucks, your record showing a dishonorable discharge carries the biggest sting.
No, it's not "cool" that he finally got heard. It's an absolute disgrace that this took 15 years. This man's honor was taken away from the very people that he served. Not only did he not get appreciated, he got spat in the face.

I hear the same thing you said from many survivors, which is what you are. I appreciate your positive intentions and pray for relief of your mental burden. We should all be better than this. Can't train man to kill legally and then put him rt back into society. That's why so many go back. Prison is similar. Just a different situation and setting. Many veterans are locked up for doing what their government trained them to do. Can't just be that and one day say ahh that was then. Doesn't work. Best wishes 🙏👊✌️
Totally agree with no fear of hell, we’ve already been there. I was even waiting for death during my deployment and having to deal with a cheating husband back home in the states. Yeah life sucks when you get back and also get discriminated against by the color of our skin. No wonder why it’s easier to end it all when we have so much pain as veterans. We endure a lot of BS. But if we hang on one day at a time it gets better. Gotta keep on trucking and just say f*ck it sometimes.
"Isn't that amazing, on Memorial day getting your honor back" I honestly don't know why but that made me angry. This man never lost his honor, it was tarnished by his leadership & community.
Yeah, I agree with you. I felt like that was a poor choice of words, and I wish she would have articulated it differently. He didn’t get his honor back - he’s always been an honorable veteran. It’s about getting acknowledged for your sacrifices. He earned and deserved to have his paperwork showcase the correct information. It took newly two decades for that to come to pass - which is shameful. I’m glad he was finally able to get everything corrected, but it still pains me to witness everything that he has been through.

It wasn’t joy. He spent 15 years fighting for what he worked so hard for. He has felt pain, anger, disappointment, sadness. He spent 15 years fighting for this. All these emotions rushing in at once.
It breaks my heart to see a comrade in arms get treated with such disrespect. We need more accountability for mistakes that are made. It shouldn't be so hard to verify if someone reaches out saying they did not get what was deserved.

Same thing happened to me. After discharged, somehow the government "lost" my paperwork. Took 7 years of fighting. $20k in back pay. Most people would have given up and this is what the government is banking on.
I say this very often and it still holds true. "The military could be a blessing or the worst mistake of your life". In this case, it was his worst mistake. His whole life was turned upside-down after fighting for a country that cared absolutely less about him. The United States let him down for a decade and a half.
It was a worst decision for me.. I gave my mental health and have nothing to show for my service except that I'm a fucked up person now.. VA treatment is garbage.. then seeing how the country is now... I wish I never served...

@ Shawn Kay
Agreed.

Yes it does. Even on active duty, when you’re in, they mess your stuff up a bunch.
The U.S. military is not big only 0.01% join the military. Records like that get dripped like that are lack of the civilians that run the out processing system. This type of " mistake" on the part of the military is inexcusable, and shameful. They really need to get their paperwork act together.
This kind of ineptitude is why people lose faith in the military and leave

Honourable??? Yeah killing innocents and stealing is very Honourable
@Hernando Malinche get stronger kid. Ur country weak af n crumbles all the time

More likely it was.destroyed by.dtsye side pen pusher in the VA your seem how badly they treat vets
