- With a name like the Gladiator 493 you can’t help but expect big things from this new model by boutique Italian builder, Canados.
Think of this as an Italian take on a traditional American centre console recipe. Maybe not quite as practical as the stuff on the other side of the Atlantic but performance oriented and brimming with mouthwatering details.
Its triple-stepped hull is twinned with triple Mercury V12 600hp outboards for a top speed of 55 knots and it will cruise comfortably at 40 knots for a range of around 250nm.
On board, the aft deck is the main focus of the deck spaces with its sociable U-shaped seating, which converts to a sun pad, and a big wet bar with sink, grill and twin fridges. Right forward there is sun bathing space. The triple helm station is stylish and well designed with comfortable bolster helm seats finished in Ferrari leather and a driver focussed dash arrangement.
Below decks there is an open-plan double berth forward with a small double amidships, separate to the the main cabin. A spacious separate bathroom is shared between the two sleeping areas and opposite a useful dresser with storage ands a fridge.

That feels like not a lot of boat for a lot of money!
It looks cool, it’s fast, it’s customisable, but you certainly pay for that! It certainly wouldn’t get my money as there’s plenty I like more that cost less.

I could buy a small Nordhavn for $2.2 million dollars. It would win a race against this boat if you were racing across the Atlantic.
I don't see the value. It's not a heritage yacht brand, there's nothing special about it whatsoever, and it's using run of the mill powertrain with very normal specs for that type of boat. All of that at a high premium....It doesn't even *look* Italian. And with 250nm of range, it doesn't make a great Florida boat (even with that "Florida spec"). For $1.49M USD you can get a 54' Scout with quad mercury 600's and nearly 400nm of range, all while offering the same speed and vastly better utility and accommodations (like actual standing headroom, not that fiberglass sleeping bag).
What exactly is special about this thing, other than it being something that "you've never heard of"?
