Used to go camping at Split Rock-before the days when a small number of people could claim it as their private domain. We’d put the canoe in and paddle out a quarter-mile or so in a light chop. It was amazing just how far down we could see the bottom. Lots of great hiking over to Corundum Point.

That is such a beautiful area. I love spending time driving up highway 61.

It's so nice to visit this beautiful location without leaving the comfort of my couch! Thanks for not using techno music, if much rather hear your narration. Excellent! :)

Each place I visit is an experience that sticks in my mind. I can remember what the weather was like, the people I talked to, and the sights I saw. I know for some people it might be a bit boring to listen to me talk, and I don't edit any of the video into nice little clips. My purpose in making the videos is to let someone that may not be able to make it out to see the places enjoy the sights and have a you are there feeling as they watch the video. I have questions I can't answer as I am flying and if I see an interesting place I can go check it out. The comments I get the most are "I grew up there and it brings back fond memories." The other comment I get quite a bit is "I live here and I never knew what it looked like from the air." I am glad you enjoyed the video, and if you get a feeling like you are standing next to me , I have accomplished what I set out to do.

I remember as a teenager I got my first good 35mm camera and hiked down to the shore near the little white shed below the lighthouse and took my first photos with that camera. You can get a peak of that shed at 1:16 in the video. The shed was at an old landing and was used to store supplies for the lighthouse unloaded by boat. Looking up the shore to the lighthouse perched on the cliff gave me some good shots that I framed back then and still have hanging on the wall . That was 41 years ago.

The lighthouse is a very beautiful place. I actually shot the video in 4K 30fps and when you watch it on a larger tv in 4K it is pretty spectacular. It is very relaxing to watch. I also enjoy watching people enjoying themselves. Life seems to go by so fast. Thank you for sharing your memories.

Very good film and the picture is clear! Maybe you should get a clip of Gooseberry Falls? Thanks for sharing!

Just magnificent views and masterful flying of the drone. I also love the commentary rather than the usual music people slap over their footage.

I am glad you enjoyed the video. The thing that drew me into flying drones was the view. You could see things from the air in a perspective that you just couldn't see from the ground. I am always amazed at the beauty of things right next to us .

I am glad you enjoyed the video. My goal is for people to be able to experience seeing an area in a way they would not normally see it, and to relax while they are doing it. We live in a beautiful country with a lot of great people.

Thank you, Bill. I am flying a DJI Phantom 4 Advanced. What beautiful day it turned out to be. I went up highway 61 and stopped at 10 different places. Best drone flying day I ever had.

Hi, was wondering if I could use your video for an upcoming video I have?

    • @OnTheEdgeNow
      @OnTheEdgeNow  Год назад

Unfortunately because of the FAA rules for commercial and recreational flying, I stopped giving permission for the use of my drone videos. I am a recreational flyer so no profit can be made on my videos. Even though I would not be making a profit by letting you use the video, if you make a profit I’m sure they would be paying me a visit. I am sorry, but to keep my life drama free, I am going to have to decline.

@@1978tenpack Either one would be nice. I started out with a Phantom 2 and then bought a Phantom 3 Advanced. With each generation they become easier to fly with unbelievably great video capabilities.

@@OnTheEdgeNow I started out like you said in your video with a cheapy skyviper drone. Only flew it for like 3 months and then bought the phantom 3 standard which was actually WAY easier to fly than the skyviper. The only reason I would want the zoom is so I could record things from further away without people knowing the drone was there because you know how people lose their shit over drones nowadays lol.

As cool as drone footage can be, please be considerate of the rest of the people and wildlife and aware of the rules. Drone use is not allowed in/over the Split Rock Lighthouse historical site and the DNR has this on their use -
"The division discourages use of unmanned aircraft in state parks, state recreation areas, and state waysides because of the impracticality of their operation under existing rule. Unmanned aircraft or drones are defined as "aircraft" by the Federal Aviation Administration and it is unlawful to land any aircraft on lands or water totally within the boundaries of any state park, state recreation area, or state wayside. Because of the prohibition on "landing," operating unmanned aircraft in these areas is not practical. The division is also concerned about the impact of unmanned aircraft to natural resources (especially wildlife), to division buildings and infrastructure, and to other visitors' safety, privacy, and quality of experience."
I realize it is easy and quick to launch and land before anyone associated with enforcement may be able to see your location and pay you a visit, that doesn't mean it wasn't irritating to others.

I thank you for your comment. A new tool we have put out by the FAA is called B4UFLY. It is an app I can use that will show restricted air space. I am hoping the state of Minnesota will register all their restricted air space on this app. It will make flying easier for all drone operators. My drone has two features built in that help me fly. My drone will not let me take off in restricted air space, and if I fly up to restricted air space it will stop and not proceed any further. It also will restrict the height I can fly at, in certain areas. These restricted zones are updated regularly and my drone will not take off if I don't keep it updated. I also have an identifier that is broadcast when I fly so the launch and run option is no longer valid. If you look at my Two Harbors video and my Grand Maris video I mention taking off in an area so as not to bother anyone. As for an environmental impact I see less of a threat then ships dumping their ballast or trash into the lake water (Zebra Mussels ) or people dropping their cell phones or cameras in the water, not to mention littering and starting forest fires. When I fly, I have two goals in mind. 1. I want to help people who can not get out, enjoy the beautiful sites we have to see, and maybe make their day a little brighter. 2. Encourage people that can get out, to go see the the great beauty this country has to offer. I try to go out of my way not to bother anyone, and when flying at 250 feet the noise is not noticeable. All the interactions I have had with people have always been positive. I do thank you for the information on the Minnesota state parks and will avoid flying in them in the future. I also thank you for letting me know of your concern, hoping hearing from people like you will make me more aware when I fly.
