7 Reasons FIGMA is a CRITICAL Step in a Professional Web Design Workflow (4 & 6 Are Undeniable)

  • Figma has been a staple of my web design workflow for years. Before Figma, it was Adobe XD. Of course, I'm also guilty of "designing in the builder" in years past.
    Let me clarify, though. When I say "my web design workflow," I don't mean that I'm actually the one doing the designing. I admitted to myself years ago that I'm not a real designer. I can "get by," but I'm not a legit designer. Thus, I hand off the design portion of our client projects to people who know what they're doing.
    See, design and development are two VERY DIFFERENT disciplines. Most great designers don't know how to do development, and most great developers aren't good at design.
    I think our industry would be WAY better off if more developers/assemblers admitted to themselves and their clients that they're not designers and then hired real designers to lead the design phase of their projects.
    That's the first big step in separating design and development in your workflow (and professionalizing your process).
    The second big step is to separate where the work gets done. Page builders, and design tools like Figma, are radically different work environments. Design tools empower designers to do their best work. Page builders do not.
    When creative work is done in page builders, things get inefficient and messy. A lot of people will try to say this isn't the case. They'll argue that it's more efficient to design in page builders. But, the cold hard truth is that 95% of these people aren't designers - they're developers who are desperately trying to cling to their role as the "I can do it all" person.
    At the end of the day, this isn't a question of preference. The answer isn't purely subjective. There are some undeniable reasons why UX and UI design should be done in a design tool rather than a development environment, and I'm going to give you seven of them in this video.
    Watch the video, digest the seven reasons, and then consider adding Figma to your workflow if you haven't already. With Frames for Figma and ACSS Tokens right around the corner (getframes.io/f..., UX Design, Wireframes, Prototypes, and high-fidelity UI design have never been easier or more efficient.

    Literally been telling my students too about the same things. I use to design in Fireworks and then Sketch and then XD and now Figma. One of the key things i hear people say is "what's the point of doing it twice" and every-time i hear it, it breaks my soul a little bit. It seems cumbersome, but you can tell websites that were actually designed before hand than those that were designed in a page builder. Design tools allow you to be creative and doesn't limit you , but you're often restricted when building directly in the page builder.

    Ok, I want to publicly admit that I have I re-created all frames designs in figma to use them internally with my team, since the day Frames came out. I don’t use token though. But I feel I was stealing lol 😅
    I will buy it when Kevin launch it anyway because I want to support. Also tokens functionality sounds great.

    When Frames for Figma drops, we’re going to need a Page Designer/Wireframer Course video series. 😉😉

    Kevin, thanks for the video. I'm really looking forward to Frames for Figma. I'm a one person "shop" right now and I welcome all of the help I can get to come up with great designs & not have to do repetitive development in my page builder (currently Bricks). You scared me at the beginning of the video when you were discussing F4F, it was only until the end when I exhaled and realized F4F hasn't dropped yet. Thanks for the video. Great content!

    Exactly what I was saying in the Inner Circle so thanks for doing this Kevin! Spot on with my points I made on there!
    I’m design first 100% and trained, but learning Bricks and ACSS/frames for me creates a hugely more efficient and profitable designer as if they’re naive to those tools they have narrow vision in the designs. It’s the classic architect vs builder scenario.

    As always, Your explanation of this process to someone with just basic skills like myself, is very eye-opening.
    Question - I get Adobe XD as part of the Adobe Suite. Are there any objections to using XD for design, and will you eventually make frames available to the XD platform?

    I'm confused.. so there is going to be a whole separate "ACSS Tokens and Frames for Figma".. as in none of this comes with ACSS and Frames, as we know them now?
    Meaning these are all separate products?
    Product - ACSS
    Product - Frames
    Product - ACSS Tokens for Figma
    Product - Frames for Figma
    Hell, I'm still waiting on for Frames components to be alpha / stable.

    Hey Kevin, I'm starting a new project this week and hiring a designer (for the first time)... any chance Frames Figma will be released this week? Also, do most designers know how to use a token system and how will it work sharing access to Frames Figma with my designer? Would most designers be ecstatic to use a wireframing tool like this? Thanks.

    • @Gearyco
      @Gearyco  Год назад +1

      No, not this week. I think most experienced designers in Figma should know about tokens by now.

    Has Frames for Figma been rebuilt using the new native Figma variables?

    • @uioverhaul
      @uioverhaul Год назад +2

      Current native application of tokens (variables) inside Figma has limitations. It is certainly a step in the right direction but Figma Studio plugin (free version) is still ahead in many ways.
      Once we’ll be able to achieve the same level of functionality natively in Figma, it is only a logical step to ditch Figma Studio plugin.
