I would say he’s a safe pick. He’s already proven against other pros and most of the time when you get to high level basketball like this you gotta go with the one with the most IQ. while watching this video i was paying attention to my inner monologue, and it was long. then i saw this comment precisely explain my dilemma with lamelo in one sentence...thanks
This is the exact way I feel. I go back and forth between thinking he'll be a great player and thinking he'll be a bust. I think his body will take a lot longer to develop and by then teams might have given up on him being a star. Kind of like Ricky Rubio.
For me, I feel like Melo just needs to change his mentality if he wants to be great. He’s got the talent, skills, and he’s been an exposed to pressure at a young age so he has developed “amnesia” in his game which is something you only see in superstars. Problem is, Melo isn’t disciplined and has a lot of bad habits. Forcing shots, minimal effort defensively, over dribbling, excessive flashiness, etc. If he can just slow down, put in the time and effort, and make things easier for himself, he’s going to be a future superstar. I’m talking Luka-esque type of superstar.
What I love about J. Kyle Mann's is that he always lands on a hopeful note, regardless of his assessment of the talent. He points out the downsides, identifies the context and what should be improved. Young players really should start watching his videos.

@@Chocolouf Melo is not an explosive guy and never really has been. He can dunk cause he’s tall but his vertical isn’t that high. Lonzo is more athletic. Out of the 3 brother Melo started dunking the latest. Even when he was around 6’4-6’5 at 16 he couldn’t dunk consistently
@@nelsondendomo6687 That's because of bad habits and lack of work ethic when young. I guarantee you if he was doing consistent weight training as his body was growing he would be far more explosive. There's also no excuse for the shooting form and the fact that he was never that how to play passable defense.
@@michaelldn lmao bad work ethic, hate on Lavar and the ball bros all you want but two of your sons don’t just go top 3 off talent alone. And another son who played at the D1 level. You don’t just luck and talent your way into the NBA, especially if it’s two sons that made it. Lavar had them boys working they asses off. Not everyone is going to have world class explosiveness dude, no matter how hard you work on it. Lonzo is the more explosive athlete in the family, Lamelo is the more smooth and coordinated one.
The thing is. Lamelo is not even really used to his body yet. The choices he makes are all based around being the smallest guy on the court. This will be an advantage for him once he stops grwoing completely. He is still going to girth out a bit. Look at his dad and uncles and brothers. So after he adjusts to his hieght hes going to have to adjust to added weight. Either way he will have additional weapons. Just physically the potential is there.
Someone who will always be a negative defender should never go #1 in the draft. And you’re likely never going to win a title with a guy like that as a heavy minutes player. So there’s no way I would take him.
@@mleekahh Players who never player nor cared for defense won't magically change their mind. Andrew Wiggins is the perfect example on how talent without hard work can't get anybody that far in the NBA. Redo his draft class today and he's getting selected around the late top 15-20.
@@Chocolouf yes they do. Lonzo did, rondo did, John wall did, lebron did klay Thompson did etc. a lot of those players have defensive highlights but weren’t willing to play much defense in college or high school but once they got to the league, they became better defenders. Defense can also be a mindset not just skills. Some great defenders are not skilled but they play well on defense
@@mleekahh By that age, especially if you’ve played as long and as much as LaMelo, you’re basically who you are as a basketball player. You can certainly develop skills, etc, but there are a few things that you can’t really teach once someone becomes an adult. Motor, rebounding, aggressiveness and defense. These are things that a person has or doesn’t. By now, if LaMelo doesn’t take pride in his defense, it’s simply not something he’s going to be important to him.
@@pedrojello8983 Absolutely not. You can't suddenly play defense when you don't even know how to play it. Lonzo had good fundamental, Klay was known for being a sound player. LaMelo has never even bother to try playing defense, he was labelled lazy during is tenure in Lithuania, when he was supposed to start behaving like a pro, and was the worst defender in the NBL. He's only going to look even worse in the NBA because everyone is better, faster, stronger and taller.
I think these players grow up with a weird shooting form because they start so young and try their best to get the ball up to the rim and then it’s hard to change it afterward
Really enjoyed this breakdown by Kyle Mann... I agree with most everything... But, let's not disrespect Pistol Pete with a comparison to LaMelo : ) He's got top 35 potential... but his bust potential remains high as well...
Donald Priola well I compared their developmental environments, if you listened. Not worth getting mad over imo. Pistol was wildly skilled and an entertainer, but he is immensely overrated today.
if somebody wastesthe number one pic on Lemell Ball then they will get what they deserve. It's not nearly as hard to learn to pass well as it is to have a consistent jumper or a decent skill at getting your own buckets. Lamelo ball it's just like his brother. I actually don't think he's as good as his brother but he's the new hot thing.. I'm willing to bet that somebody like James Wiseman will have an immediate impact in the NBA. I think most of the guys being mentioned in the lottery have a skill set that will transfer pretty quickly. I don't see that at all with lamelo ball. Somebody is going to make a big mistake and hurt their franchise by taking him way too high in the ottery. I have watched a lot of tape and I am so unimpressed. How can a guy that has played that much basketball Have such a horrible jumper? I would avoid him like the plague
In the beginning of the video he said Melo was 6’6” but later when he’s talking about his defense he mentioned there’s no excuses for his defense to to be weak at the height of 6’7” 🤣
Praying for this kid. I don’t know if he’ll be good but I just don’t want people to be mean to him cause I’ve been watching this nigga since he was like 10 lol
Can we address his quickness? There's been scouting report that because he's so tall and lengthy, he has issues with quickness. It explains why he jacks up so many bad shots. He doesn't have that physical ability to get around players with the ball. On defense, add in that he has trouble getting low and move his feet laterally, it really spells doom on that end. That said, he's still incredibly skilled that he will still be a play maker in the NBA. Just not sure how good of a player he'll actually become.
@@zzcc229 What do you mean he doesn't need it on offense? I think it adds to his low percentage shots because he can't go around defenders, so he's force to jack up a bad shot. He's not slow footed by any means, but he does seem to have trouble in the Aussie league, and in the NBA where the best athletes are, it's only going to get worse.
This may seem fanboyish but I truly believe that lamelo is a hoop genius. He just needs the finetuning. He could honestly be an absolute legend but he needs freedom to express himself.
You're a point guard on an Australian basketball team, and when you're on the court they go 3-9? How does that make you a lottery pick? Edit: how you gonna compare him to Pistol Pete and LaMelo don't even got a pea shooter 😩
Great comment. Pistol averaged 44 a game for LSU at the D1 level. Pistol was a lights out shooter. Lamelo would be lucky to average 18 ppg if he went D1, IMO. Pistol is the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points scored, despite only playing three seasons in college. That means he averaged 44.2 points per game😳
If Lamelo went to college, he would have been a consensus #1 pick. His stats would have been atleast 20/8/8 with a better 3 point percentage and fg%, he would have no trouble on offense.
You did not just compare LaMelo to pistol Pete? Pistol Pete was an incredible finisher and an incredible shooter. Just because his handle and passing is really good don't mean I make some pistol Pete. Pistol Pete average 37 a game in college. He used to drop 50 at high efficiency without the three. And his jump shot was as beautiful as any other jump shot you've seen. You're unreal my man
Comparing LaMelo to Pistol Pete? I think he'll mostly ended up as MCW; a Rookie of the year, but not a player you can win with because of the lack of defense. He's there to generate excitement while the team tanks, and then you trade him away while his value is high. The added baggage here is LaVair, who'll constant talk to the media and became a distraction to the team. As for maturity, didn't LaMelo got caught stealing in China and have to ask Trump to bail him out? He has the talent to be the #1 pick, he's might be a #1 pick, but a few years from now he'll not be the best player in the 2020 draft.
I project LaMelo as something like an early Jason Kidd/early Jason Williams hybrid in his first few years in the NBA - the pace, speed and flair of both, the inefficient early career shooting of both, the handle of JWill and the vision of JKidd.
i hope i'm maybe will be wrong (his passing ability is outstanding) but he feels like a gigantic bust waiting to happen. Guy is like a taller version of Trae Young but he can't shoot the ball.
He's a better finisher, passer and has potential to be a much much better defender than Trae Young. As seen with Lonzo, shooting will gradually improve. Worst case scenario Lamelo will be a Ricky Rubio. Gigantic Bust? You think he'll be Anthony Bennett???
@@jeffhardy6333 Ricky Rubio has been a NBA starter for a decade now. He’s one of the best passers in the last 10 years. That’s actually a very hopeful Lamelo worst case scenario

Ayo is this The Godfather theme but a lofi hip hop remix? GAS
How tf did lavar ball fked up all his kids shooting form. Such a waste of what couldve been a flawless skillset
@chiboy773 i understand that everyone is built different but just like every skills like driving or swimming etc comes with proper fundamental and mechanics. Bad mechanics are usually product of bad habits. Still can be reliable but there are limitation
@chiboy773 trust me im a scientist
@chiboy773 Yet another guy who doesn’t understand science so he thinks it must all bullshit. Yes analytics do matter. What doesn’t matter is how much competitive ball you’ve played if you approach it with such an ignorant attitude. You could have 10,000 hours on the court but if you’re a dumbass who thinks science is for nerds then you’re not gonna understand how to develop your game as well as somebody who has 10,000 hours AND a decent understanding of biomechanics. I’m sorry if this is bad news to you but that’s the reality
@Mobile Games Mate what the fuck are you actually on about? How did I regurgitate information? Who the fuck said anything about needing to regurgitate information? We’re not prepping for a school exam. You should UNDERSTAND information because utilising it will help you improve faster. I could care less if you regurgitate it. What’s all this bollocks about getting it from a source? I’d love you to get information from sports science textbooks & journals & data analysts etc. I ENCOURAGE you too. That’s where I get my info from. It’s got absolutely nothing to do with me being right you shit-stirring donut. The guy I was replying to made it quite clear he doesn’t think it’s important from any source, so what the hell are you even talking about? I’m not claiming to be THE source. I’m not here to give him a crash course on weight imbalances during various shooting stances. I can’t lead a donkey to water AND make it drink. I’m simply telling him he’s being ignorant. It’s entirely upto him if he listens. If you don’t accept that biomechanics and form has a significant effect on percentages, then I will call you an ignorant donkey because that’s simply what you are
@@matthewvaughan8192 does knowing science also mean you have to be an asshole? Like relax dude, why do the oh so knowledgeable feel the need to act so arrogant, like really? You must feel so mighty and powerful on RUclips.
Hold on is that The Godfather tune in the beginning instrumental?!
I know! I need the name of the beat
@@neelmoudgil4962 anyone find out the name of it?
The Ball's issues with shooting is because when you were a kid, you shot the ball a different way because you're still weak, then when you grew up to about highschool age, they teach you the proper technique. They didn't get that.
They also didn't develop their body, for a 6'7 guy he lacks explosiveness, especially when dunking, his head is nowhere near the rim.
Maybe not but the 2nd brother Liangelo is an exceptional shooter. Best out of the 3
@@nelsondendomo6687 That's because of bad habits and lack of work ethic when young.
No idea if he will be good or bad but his low light reel sure is something else
Why are these videos so damn relaxing?!
Someone who will always be a negative defender should never go #1 in the draft. And you’re likely never going to win a title with a guy like that as a heavy minutes player. So there’s no way I would take him.
But hes only 18/19. Its not like hes 25 who cant d up. Its better that hes young, bwcause its easier to develop
He doesn't seem very good at one specific thing. Which means high bust potential lol.
7:35 he's like every player in 2K Park.
Really enjoyed this breakdown by Kyle Mann... I agree with most everything... But, let's not disrespect Pistol Pete with a comparison to LaMelo : ) He's got top 35 potential... but his bust potential remains high as well...
I was really mad at the Pete comparison. Especially with Pistol's reputation for being highly disciplined.
Donald Priola well I compared their developmental environments, if you listened. Not worth getting mad over imo. Pistol was wildly skilled and an entertainer, but he is immensely overrated today.
I like the ringer and everything. But I only subscribed for J Kyle Mann
the iconic voice, the music, the edits, the narrative
if somebody wastesthe number one pic on Lemell Ball then they will get what they deserve.
He's 6'7
Your right, he is 6’7 and one quarter without shoes
We're not counting the NSYNC frosted tipped fro.
In the beginning of the video he said Melo was 6’6” but later when he’s talking about his defense he mentioned there’s no excuses for his defense to to be weak at the height of 6’7” 🤣
@@morelag8031 He's not even 6 foot 6 without shoes. He's maybe a shade over 6 foot 5.
@@ngc-fo5te are you dumb? He's taller than his 6'6 brother Lonzo. He's 203cm tall, thats 6'8
He doesn't really need it on offense..but yeah It's gonna hurt him on defence for sure
🤷🤷 he scored a lot in High School?? Lmao I'm not sure why people are hyping him up. His defense in this video was ATROCIOUS
@@educatehour these kids don't know what they're talking about my dude. Don't waste your time
I don't understand people who think he will improve as a shooter. Since he was ten years old he has not done anything but shoot threes
If Lamelo went to college, he would have been a consensus #1 pick. His stats would have been atleast 20/8/8 with a better 3 point percentage and fg%, he would have no trouble on offense.
Finally a legit review with no hate.... Objective and valid criticisms but also truth not like that clown Bill Simmons
You're unreal my man
He is no Piston Pete. Rather compare to Jason Williams
Ball has a long way to go before he gets a shred of respect on even Jason Williams' level. But it is a better comparison.
DONT Disrespect Jason Williams Like That..😂😂😂...
No. 1 overall comment
Mans was one of the worst shooters in the nbl and worse defenders and the nbl.............. this is a GrEAt draft class if he goes 1
My God. J. Kyle Mann does it again. Simply one of the best at narrarating basketball breakdown videos.
For me, melo seems like any other player that was/is given the green light. Aside maybe his passing/open court vision.
How dare you slander the defense of the undisputed GOAT Finn Delany
Actually that was his other brother LiAngelo. Honest mistake. everything else spot on
Finally, Kyle is back
I project LaMelo as something like an early Jason Kidd/early Jason Williams hybrid in his first few years in the NBA - the pace, speed and flair of both, the inefficient early career shooting of both, the handle of JWill and the vision of JKidd.
But he isn't quick nor fast, he has no explosiveness either in his first step and when dunking, he can't even get his head at rim level.
It’s like the 3rd LaMelo video already. Can we get a video on some other prospects? everyone is just repeating the same stuff with Melo at this point
Other prospects won’t get the amount clicks Melo does
Who produced the godfather sample in the beat at the start??
Waiting on that rookie report for melo
Died at the ”A gem, or a bum?” Part 😂😂
been waiting for this one
The section of 1:59 to 2:12 (electrons orbiting Melo + Ron Weasley clip) might be the best part of any video I’ve seen in the past 6 months LOL 😂
i hope i'm maybe will be wrong (his passing ability is outstanding) but he feels like a gigantic bust waiting to happen. Guy is like a taller version of Trae Young but he can't shoot the ball.
Yeah with his heigth he should be at least a reliable defender
He's a better finisher, passer and has potential to be a much much better defender than Trae Young. As seen with Lonzo, shooting will gradually improve. Worst case scenario Lamelo will be a Ricky Rubio. Gigantic Bust? You think he'll be Anthony Bennett???
@@jeffhardy6333 Ricky Rubio has been a NBA starter for a decade now. He’s one of the best passers in the last 10 years. That’s actually a very hopeful Lamelo worst case scenario
@@Pedroapares If you think Ricky Rubio is a hopeful comparison for Lamelo then I'll agree to disagree lmao
@@jeffhardy6333 i mean, obviously Lamelo has a higher ceiling but let’s not act like Ricky Rubio is a scrub. Saying Lamelo worst scenario is being Rubio. The guy is one of the most consistent point guards of the last 10 years
What an insult to pistole Pete. Not even close
This is actually a really good assessment of Lemelo... you definitely got a new subscriber today 🙏🙏🙏 thanks for being a good basketball mind
we can't yet say that lamelo ball is a bust cuz he haven't played in the nba yet
Too much upside and too many negative basketball habit BUST
