I would say he’s a safe pick. He’s already proven against other pros and most of the time when you get to high level basketball like this you gotta go with the one with the most IQ. Melo can see anything and make any pass, especially the cross the court pass. If anything someone in the league could use him

This is the exact way I feel. I go back and forth between thinking he'll be a great player and thinking he'll be a bust. I think his body will take a lot longer to develop and by then teams might have given up on him being a star. Kind of like Ricky Rubio.

For me, I feel like Melo just needs to change his mentality if he wants to be great. He’s got the talent, skills, and he’s been an exposed to pressure at a young age so he has developed “amnesia” in his game which is something you only see in superstars. Problem is, Melo isn’t disciplined and has a lot of bad habits. Forcing shots, minimal effort defensively, over dribbling, excessive flashiness, etc. If he can just slow down, put in the time and effort, and make things easier for himself, he’s going to be a future superstar. I’m talking Luka-esque type of superstar.

Yooo.... you yourself said he has a poor three point shot percentage and bad defense. So how can you possibly justify saying LaMelo is a justifiable number 1 pick? Guards need to be able to hit open three pointers at a good percentage. Any poor defender is a constant liability on the court. From what I've seen, he has a bad attitude as well, but that's open for argument as it's not a statistic.

    • @futurehofer1564

he has shown the ability to knockdown threes and improved his mechanics over the season. Defensively he isnt great but he has all the tools, which is already great. When you add his incredible vision to the mix, he def has an argument as the no1 pick

Y’all jus label him bust and don’t even let the guy play a fucking minute in the league. Not saying you gotta believe he’s gonna be the next best thing, but people denying he has any type of potential to be a star are delusional. Y’all think these NBA teams are just fucking around with their futures? He has potential, and HUGE flaws, especially for today’s game, but in a weak draft you roll the dice on a great playmaker who’s 6’7, and hope he works everything else out.

The hype is certainly there and he's in a unique position where it looks like he'd be a decent fit for Golden St, Charlotte, and Chicago as the second, third, or fourth pick. His fate is pretty heavily intertwined with Wiseman's, who is the safer superstar pick, and judging from stats alone should be picked up by Golden State as the second overall pick though Wiseman would develop better and have a larger role in Charlotte.
Even if LaMelo ends up a bust, it'd still generate massive hype.

Is Lamelo a better or worse prospect than Ricky Rubio in 09? Both were known first for their incredible and often flashy passing. Lamelo clearly wants to be a scorer, where Ricky would pass first, second, and probably third. Ricky was already a high energy and smart defender, while Lamelo hasn't played defense in... ever? Neither were good outside shooters (though Ricky was considerably better from the line), and both are good athletes rather than great ones. Ricky played in a much (much much) better league, and contributed significantly more to winning, but also was locked into his overseas contract for a couple extra years. Lamelo is part of the Lavarr circus and may need a really strong culture to nature in.
If instead of Pistol Pete, we said his career would be Ricky Rubio with worse defense, how excited should we be for Lamelo?

For the defensive aspect of lamelo you can literally look at lonzo and see how good he can be. Lonzo guards everyone from the 1 to the 5. Lamelo has a bigger frame than zo but has less muscle and strength. As lamelo grows into his full body i think we will start to see more defense out of him. As of right now his best defensive aspect is steals which come from his iq but his general laziness on defense comes from him not really putting any effort.

The choices he makes are all based around being the smallest guy on the court. This will be an advantage for him once he stops grwoing completely. He is still going to girth out a bit. Look at his dad and uncles and brothers. So after he adjusts to his hieght hes going to have to adjust to added weight. Either way he will have additional weapons. He doesn't have that physical ability to get around players with the ball. On defense, add in that he has trouble getting low and move his feet laterally, it really spells doom on that end.

Comparing LaMelo to Pistol Pete? I think he'll mostly ended up as MCW; a Rookie of the year, but not a player you can win with because of the lack of defense. He's there to generate excitement while the team tanks, and then you trade him away while his value is high. The added baggage here is LaVair, who'll constant talk to the media and became a distraction to the team. As for maturity, didn't LaMelo got caught stealing in China and have to ask Trump to bail him out? He has the talent to be the #1 pick, he's might be a #1 pick, but a few years from now he'll not be the best player in the 2020 draft.
