My grandfather played all over Indianapolis with Wes, Buddy and Monk Montgomery in the 50's. He told me a BOATLOAD of stories about Wes, in particular. This man was pure genius!
Wow! What a thrill it must have been to play with Wes Montgomery just the BEST guitarist. A real God-given talent. So many black musicians didn't read music YET created the best music ever like Charlie Christian, Errol Garner and I believe Louis Armstrong started like this. There is something very SPIRITUAL going on with musicians like Wes Montgomery. Just phenomenal!!
2dasimmons Sorry for the late reply...I totally agree! Hell, Paul McCartney can't even read music!?! Charlie Christian and Wes were right there with Paul, when it comes to truly creating a distinctive sound......
from literally nothing!
That's amazing Keyser, Wes is responsible for getting me in to Jazz music, what an incredible musician! Not to mention the Montgomery brothers as well. I've been a guitarist for about twelve years now, and am just now starting to really get interested in Jazz, and by comparison of other genres, I feel that it is considerably more sophisticated and yet at the same time very free flowing and exciting.
Wonderful! Nothing compares to BLACK MUSIC/MUSICIANS. Just tremendous.
no problem. But, I don't compare the white musicians with the black ones because BLACK MUSIC IS HIGH-SPIRIT. HERE IN USA it is the foundation of popular music which is why JAZZ-ROCK'N'ROLL-BLUES-GOSPEL AND EVEN HIPHOP/RAP is so popular.
I am a big Wes fan. Considering the adversity and struggles black people faced generally, a success story like this is incredible.
Wes is simply the best ever.
Thanks is all I can say❤ for this Documentary❤ John Barnett Sept 15 2023 Stockton Calif❤
I grew up on these records and still own all of the original vinyl. He and BB King are the reason I play guitar to this day. Just the best. He is part of the guitar foundation - Robert Johnson, Charlie Christian, T-Bone Walker, JImi Hendrix.
Wes has always been one of my favorite Jazz guitarist. Another is the INCOMPARABLE Grant Green.
I really like Grant Green jr. too!!
Grew up on this-Thanks to my intelligent wonderful Dad...RIP..my father..
Wes is a force of nature on guitar!! ❤
I don't have many heroes, but Wes is one.
The fabulous Nancy Wilson narrating about the great Wes Montgomery! What a beautiful combination! When Wes burst on the scene, it was transitioning from black and white TV to high definition color! Phenomenal!
IM PROUD TO SAY WES IS MY GREAT UNCLE!!!!!!!!!!
yeye sure
That is AWESOME! I just discovered his music. He was the greatest!
You lucky lucky person 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
I wish he was my uncle!
I greatly admired his musicianship...played from the soul.
Truly!
Priceless gem; narrated by the gr8 NancyWilson 4 NPR JazzProfiles. Somewhere I have these downloaded yrs ago when u were able 2 download off he website. Wes’s secret in his own words, thought as a musician rather than as a gtrst … almost as a big band arranger.
Genius that can't explain itself!
I am always fascinated with Wes Montgomery's thumb picking style. Just amazing.
A jazz giant, and master of his craft...
Wes Montgomery's music makes me VERY happy:D

WES is the master! God Bless him!
Absolutely Fantastic!!!!!!;
To Bomberomusician.
Thanks so much for this amazing Biog.
So nice to hear those who were close to him talk about him, especially Mrs Montgomery.
Did you drive the lady yourself?
Next time can I do the driving?
Or at least could you add my name to the long list of those who would love to help you on that!
Thanks again from all Wes admirers.
I remember seeing the Tv performance of Wes playing 'Windy" in his Orange suite with black piping- and that picture behind him of an ashtray full of trash was to my mind ; not a subtle insult, but a blatant dig against a black man no matter how good. Smart guys behind the wings & pulling strings having a laugh, just not nice. It made me so mad !! even tho' I loved his playing. I actually met him in 1965 in Ronnie Scott's Night Club, London UK, & was lucky to have a short chat with him during the interval. Gentle quiet & soft spoken man- a Gent !!
I'm 24 & I'm a fan of this guys music. One of my favorites that caught my ear was portrait of jennie, epic.
"He just did it" !!!!! Right on, Nat.
Thank you for this great post!
Really amazing music!

Fantastic video are brilliant channel.
Used to always listen to these bbc radio documentaries back in the day. I wonder if they still have them on archive in the website!
Hi, very nice :-) greetings, Mike
@lionsome Thanks man. Part 3 will be up tommorrow.
Enjoy!
I and you should be able to tell within a few bars if a player is truly gifted and Wes had the gift, Sinatra once said something like Gilberto could read a phone book it would still sound great. Same with instrumentalists - Wes had the gift of being able to improvise spontaneously, intelligently, logically emotionally and with fire. No matter how many years one without that gift studies, they just ain't gonna get it. I know firsthand :-)
Cliff Works that was Miles Davis who said João Gilberto would sound great singing the phone book.
just curious, was that quote supposed to mean Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto or Gilberto Gil?:)
@ Cliff Works: Re: "No matter how many years one without that gift studies, they just ain't gonna get it. I know firsthand :-) "
Don't worry, friend, you aren't alone! Steve Khan, himself a very good jazz guitarist with conservatory training, mentioned that very fact in the intro/forward to his book of Wes Montgomery transcriptions. Another jazz guitarist, teacher and writer, Adrian Ingram - wrote a biography of Wes. In it are collected some quotes from people who knew him, played/performed with him, or both. One was his old Indianapolis running mate, bassist Larry Ridley, who said "Wes had something that only God can give a man." He was right; Wes was touched with that ever-so-rare form of musical genius that we see only once in a great while. Even in the small elite community of the best jazz musicians in the world, Wes stood out for that reason. He was so very special. How fortunate we have his recordings!
My best frend guitarist for 53 years.
They are there. You have to search for them on the selection sidebar.
March 6- that's my birthday!
Me encanta que disfruta el documental. Lo siento pero no tengo el documental con subtitulos. No se puede comprar esta documental. Yo lo hice yo mismo. El audio provino de NPR. Yo añadí todos de los cuadros.
Love the layout, I think that's the first time seeing the dots light up for each chord on the digital neck was helpful. What version is this from? My guess is Wes didn't play this in straight quarter notes...
Excelente documental, hay alguna posibilidad de conseguirlo con subtitulos o de saber donde comprarlo? Es para material educativo. Gracias.
Great piece. i listen to Wes frequently but knew nothing about him. Thanks for posting.
Its Emily Remler though, not Reemler. Can you fix that please? (big fan of Emily too)
@funkyguitars Not sure of what you are referring to ?
donde estan las otras 3 partes
Aw man, did the rest of the parts get pulled? I can't find them. Great documentary though! Thanks! :)
What Technique?
@funkyguitars Again, what song are you speaking of ? This video is part 1 of his Documentary.....
Part 2-4?
Las otras partes están en youtube. Sin embargo, el problema es que youtube ha bloqueado los videos en algunos países. Lo siento. ¿ Donde vive usted ?
They are posted on RUclips but unfortunetly they are blocked in some countries. What country are you viewing from ?
@Bomberomusician Right, sorry - which recording is this, what CD can I find it on?
Where can I buy this documentary?
Anyone know when he started learning guitar?
@ Michael Natsariym: Wes' older brother Monk bought him a tenor (4-string) guitar when he was a teenager, but he didn't really take off until he was about twenty or so, when he got his first six-string.
What about parts 2,3,4 ??? They're not listed!!!
@Bomberomusician He's clearly talking about the link to the right ofthehfammmmfmfmmmmm...trailing off...
