I was very young in the 60s. I had all his albums. When Wes died so young, it was such a loss. He was a great musician. I still think of him and his contribution to music.
1998 I made a „68-98 Tribute Concert“ for him in my Home Town … was great - 5 Jazz guitar players well known from the area and 4 songs each… it was wonderfull and well attended. I love him …
Wes Montgomery George Benson Norman Brown, the reasons why I play the guitar. Wes Montgomery is the greatest jazz guitarist in the history of the world 🌎
Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, and Johnny Smith are probably my all time favorite jazz guitarists. Wes is number one, for me. ❤
Such a great talent, um a heavy metal kind of guy 😊but a can acknowledge a great tone and a talented guitarist no matter what the genre. Great accurate finger picker clean play through.
It sounds like he’s playing with a pick with that splayed awkward right hand. That’s how my hand naturally goes and for some reason it always feels best when you start feeling the riffs ooze out in a jam
Drummer here with a serious question: how did he achieve those 16th notes with just his thumb? Was that an alternating motion, or ridiculously fast down strokes?
He would sweep when the notes in the sequence were on the lower strings, and he would drag his thumb in the same direction. In faster passages where he couldn't use this technique, he would alternate his thumb. The downstroke was stronger, while the upstroke was lighter, adding dynamic contrast to his playing. This guy was a genius who inspires a legion of guitarists to this day. Thanks for the comment!
No man, He's not playing with real pro! This performance was recorded in 1965 and he is accompanied by a fantastic band made up of Arthur Harper on bass, Jimmy Lovelace on drums and Harold Mabern on piano.
He wasn't "An" American jazz guitarist.
He was "THE" American jazz guitarist
My favorite guitarist of all time
@Greg Smith Mine too. Fell in love with his music the first time I heard it many years ago. Made me want to learn to play guitar. Never did though.
He's Jim Hendrix of the jazz guitar.
Same
One of the best
He is my reason for wanting to play the guitar. In my mind, there are two periods of jazz guitar - before Wes and after Wes. Thank God for this man!
No, they're 3: before Wes, during Wes, after Wes

1st time I ever heard Wes hit a wrong note.
My beautiful cassette player was stolen from my college dorm room.
What i miss more than that is i had a Wes Montgomery tape in it.
