I'm glad my video resonated with you. It's interesting how relying solely on line art can limit our exploration of other techniques. I had a similar realization in my own artistic journey, and it opened up new possibilities for me. Now, I'm eager to dedicate more time to practicing rendering and expanding my skills in that area. There's always room for growth and improvement, and I encourage you to explore different techniques as well. Thank you for sharing your experience and for your kind words! 🙌
doing studies on specific parts of pieces like the fabric or hair is honestly genius and idk why I never do that, trying to do a study of a whole piece is so much work
Maybe another tip to grow even more as an artist: when studying other peoples art, don‘t use the eyedropper tool. try to choose the colors by looking at it, it will be harder and you won‘t exactly match the colors every time, but you will get an understanding of why your own paintings may look wonky, and why your lack of color theory knowledge holds you back. + you will develop an own style of color compositioning, that stands out :)
Its better to color pick your own piece for better workflow and I couldn't agree more the eye dropper tool is helpful but if over relied on can really mess up your understanding of color theory. 😅 I think the lighting mentor on RUclips taught me that.
I really admire people who have good grasp of shapes like you. Seeing how those shapes represent values so well is really nice, something I'm still struggling with...
This really showed me the importance of doing studies and master copies when you’re trying to improve a particular technique. Should be obvious lmao but I think it really helps to see it in actual practice. Nice work!
I found you on Instagram like a day ago, and you randomly popped up on my RUclips feed today. I think this is destiny, I was meant to find your amazing work.
The masters you picked from are also my favourite ones! TB Choi, Kan Liu, Dao Trong Le, are all really amazing artists. Their rendering is just so good.
Every new artists needs to wacth this video. Beginners never starts with non lining art like this. And the volumetric shapes, colors and lighting are so importants. I remembered doing this art study for leather, fabric and hair too. Even skins for multiple parts of the body as the hands or the ears in differents day time. Great work Tanalieku, great work. Maybe I'll restart some 2D art soon :)
as a traditional artist something that stands out to me about how digital artists approach renderint is that y'all often don't do underpaintings. i think you might find the forms, colors, and especially value scale come together much better if you do a monochrome study under the full rendering.
There are many different ways to paint traditionally; alla prima oil painting for example does not usually start with a monochrome underpainting. Gouache and watercolor don't either. I think everyone's brain works differently and starting with monochrome might hinder more than help some.
I always wanted to start rendering, i've tried in the past but never knew how i should do it. Watching your process not only inspired me to keep working on my art but gave a pretty nice idea of how should i practice from now on c: PRETTY NICE WORK I LOVED YOUR RESULTS
This video made me realize how possible it is to render lmao. I always sucked at it before but now I get it from watching this video and am actually excited to go and do some studies! You're actually god sent lmao
This was amazing, i stopped halfway through to get my tablet and try to paint one of your portraits :) I usually sketch on paper so I'm used to having lineart as the "bones" to everything, but that way of drawing never translated well to digital art for me. Seeing your approach without any lineart inspired me to try that, and it was so much fun! Thank you so much, i haven't felt this exited about doing art in a while :D
this video was a really big slap on my face to stop relying on lineart as guide to paint something xD thank you for the video ! i hope to be as good as you one day :D
this was such an insightful video to watch!! correctly conveying form through my rendering is always something i've struggled with, so seeing you successfully learn an improve is really motivating! your style is just so cool to look at, and i wish you the best as you grow as an artist!
I am looking at it, and think damn, I need to learn from you on how to simplify my art. Thank you for becoming an Inspiration to me :D I have to say I am already impressed by how you painted before, but after. So satisfying to watch!
I love this video so much! The way you render and break down the shadows and values really simplify the method of rendering for me! Im going to hopefully try and study this video for my own artwork, but even if it dosent go well, I'll still have walked away with something from watching this video.
You cannot begin to imagine how helpful this was. We have a very similar process and I learned so much just by watching you practice. Thank you so much!!
This art style is my tops fav yet and it's the hardest for me to do.. because my personal style is soft, round, bubbly. Great video, makes me wanna attempt it again.
Amazing video! Congratulations on your great improvement and thanks for sharing your learning process! It made me realize that I definitely need to do more master studys!
Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Doing fragmentary studies of the works of masters can indeed be helpful and less tiring while providing clarity on certain aspects. I'm excited that you're motivated to do more of them! Best of luck with your studies!
Thank you so much for sharing your efforts and improvement! The knowledge you gained over time is palpable and commendable, as well as super inspiring.
This is awesome to watch! Love seeing your progress and interesting to see the steps you took to get the finished result. Good luck on continuing to improve!! :D
Amazing, I always put off render since it takes so long time to do and only focused on line arts. But after seeing this video, it motivated me to do more render pieces. Great video.
Hi, great studies! Blocking out with shapes and transforming to correct is an interesting technique. Makes it much easier to get the proportions right compared to sketching with just lines. I need to try this method as well. Maybe 1) rough -> 2) flat shapes & corrections -> 3) lineart?
Your journey is something I didn’t know I need to watch. I learnt so much And this is incredibly relaxing to watch I’m having major fomo from social media drawing/posting on top of work loads and it eases my mind
This is soo cool! I also love your choice of references and how you organized learning how to draw by splitting them into categories. I will try this method out as well!❤❤
You're welcome! I'm glad you found the categorization of references helpful. It's a great way to focus on specific aspects of drawing. I hope you have a wonderful time exploring this method in your own practice. Thank you for your kind words! 🙏❤️
I like your work, i was also struggling to render gradations and i found out it was the brush that was working against me. Im using photoshop shop and i started using a dual brush. Normal round soft brush with a hard brush set at dual brush to taper the soft edge of the soft brush. My productivity went through the roof.
@@Tanalieku also eid Mubarak my brother, yeah it benefited me applying what you applied to your art, I am just struggling a bit but ei , good stuff mate ^^
Really love your videos, they’re really informative and helpful. I also adore your artstyle. Would you be able to do a video on how to choose colors? It’s very hard for me to even color a piece because I’m always overwhelmed by the wide range of colors available in digital medium.
I would be delighted to create a video on how to choose colors. It will be an exciting journey, and I'll make sure to prepare for it. Please stay tuned for future updates and videos. Thank you for your support!!
In 70s and 80s did studies as a kid from Saturday morning cartoons, TV guide, comics, cartoons, Nagel, even from my friends's art. I learned to do side profiles from Alfred Hitchcock's logo. It would display on the screen and he would walk into it. My mom had a lot of his books with the logo- a series of broken lines to form his face, drew it once as it was, then drew everyone like it connecting the lines until I developed my "eye", now as an adult, if I see an aspect in another art, like another way to portray light, or render skin I just try to incorporate it into my next image.
this is SUCH a cool and important video!! i've always struggled with rendering and finishing my pieces so this is really inspirational--thank you for sharing your journey!!
the before image has a much more unique and interesting angle and personality to the character in my opinion but everything else improved like the believability of the three dimensional shapes and the neatness and accuracy of the shadows
Wowwow the glow up! (I mean the art was already good before too I dont mean any shade or anything lol just that this video displays major progress yk?)
cool video! I appreciate the video format and how methodical you were in this whole process. a super interesting experiment! the results really show how your practice paid off. after watching this, I feel inspired to try and improve on some of my own art weak spots... and to also to keep reminding myself that using reference is so important! thanks for sharing : )
Incredible!! Thank you especially for sharing your thought process in addition to your footage - I find it really helpful. I think I have the opposite tendency, where I over-blend/use a soft brush too much and lose structure. I'm going to try my current process with a hard brush and see what happens!!
Awesome video! It’s always inspiring to see growth as a fellow artist! Also, quick question: where did you get those models from with the lighting for day 7?
very interesting~ i foud out if i took out my lineart away the shapes were rendered nicely underneath aside from missing a few features that would be important if it werent lines art. I'm gonna try this method. :D

underpaibt usually doesnt show digitally, because u draw over it completely
This is actually a very common technique, where you do the BW painting and then colourize it in an upper layer. Then you add the final touches.
