  • In this video I do a straight baseline comparison in Dorico 5 between several sound libraries using the NotePerformer 4 sound engine. I did not alter the notation or go "under the hood" in any way. What you hear is the exact way the notation file is structured and default settings. For reference, a live orchestral performance of this music is at the end.
    NotePerformer 4 Default Library (00:06)
    BBC Symphonic Orchestra-Core (06:24)
    EW Hollywood Opus (12:39)
    Live Orchestra-NY Chamber Symphony (18:56) *world-premiere May 1984
The music in question is the first movement of William Thomas McKinley's Symphony No. 3 from 1984, using a new engraved score that will be part of a new published edition to be released in September at Subito Music. For more information on McKInley and his music, please visit www.wtmckinley.com

In this comparrison I too, find the live performance by far the best. After that I like BBC core best. Noteperformer alone the most “computerlike”. There seems more room in the BBC less mechanical.
