- "The Late Show" host Stephen Colbert reflects back on the 2016 election cycle and discusses his hopes for the new year and Donald Trump's administration. The interview aired Sunday, Dec. 25, 2016.
As a psychotherapist, I was really struck by Mr Colbert saying "I put the pen away, and the interview became a conversation". It's absolutely true, and illustrates what's lacking in so much political discourse: We are afflicted by a desire to win. In a therapy session, if I'm holding a pen, it places me in a position of having more power than my client. However, when I put down the pen and the yellow pad of paper, and we sit together face to face, I can remain in a "not knowing" stance, and real possibility opens. Among the many things that are disturbing about politics these days is this: the failure of curiosity, of willingness to listen, and of openness to change our opinions. Until we educate ourselves to really listen to people who aren't just like us, we will be stuck in this divisive and poisonous atmosphere. Stephen Colbert is brilliant because he has the intelligence, the humility, and the humanity to recognize this. Watching his show for the last couple of months has been one of the ways I've managed my grief and disappointment; I am truly grateful to him.
Kate Halliday. . Agreed. I'm a spiritual director and I don't take any notes. I think that's intimidating and puts me in a position of being way too much in charge. I prefer the conversation as well.
Kate Halliday interesting.. hmm. I work at place where we try to make people stronger, more independent and happier. Most suffer from some kind of mental disorder and have been away from work for a long time. I often bring pen and paper just to show the. That I really care of what they say. Often they're just given empty promises. At least that's how it was until I got there.
But maybe this strategy is wrong. I want to show myself to be on an equal level yet reassure them that they'll be well taken care of and maybe most of all that they're important and that they matter.
At the same time I need to show some kind of authority as people who are not feeling well my get out of hand and I. The one sorting those situations out. It can also feel safe for them to have a constant and reliable figure which authority can give.
Its complex! I'll think of that pen though! Best would be if someone else could take notes though but we don't have the budget nor the personnel for that. Thanks.
I feel the same way with my psychologist as I do in a restaurant. You may be confident you know what I want well enough without writing it down but I'm paying for this service and I hate having to keep repeating myself. I'd just feel more at ease if I saw you writing it down. Lol
I've got the pen. I'VE GOT THE POWEEEEEER !! KNEEL BEFOR THE PEN-HOLDER YOU INSECTS !
I'd rather pay $550 dollars, an hour for someone who really listens, and tries to help me. Over someone who just writes everything I say down on a piece of paper, and shoves my story into some old filing cabinet to possibly be continued. Sometimes having a real conversation once a week is all you really need to get through the rest of it. I hate to bring this up. But it is relative. Strippers, and prostitutes make a shit ton of money for this very reason. When you're alone and you feel unwanted, or like you're less of a human being. Sometimes you want someone to make you feel like you're important. As for Kate's comment. She's right about Colbert. Speaking from the view of a not so famous comedian. I will attest to the fact that we are the most interesting cases. "That's not funny." Has been a statement that has plagued our existence since the days of old. And if anyone really looks into it they will find that we are all depressed, and we each suffer PTSD to some degree. We're soldiers! Not to the extent that we're overly strong, or we just barrel through obstacles like a Rhino plowing through a bunny rabbit. But in the sense that we not only battle ourselves, and our own problems. But we point them out as jokes about ourselves, and you laugh, and we laugh. Then we point at you, and point out your flaws in a funny manner then we laugh, and you laugh. Then at the end of the show when everyone's laughing, and walking out. We know we did our job. However to end this long ass rant that I hope you're reading Mrs. Halliday. Comedians are likely the most genuine people in the entertainment business. But we're a dying breed, because life has just gotten too offensive to people. Observational humor is becoming a thing of the past. We try, and try, and try to blend in with this new way of thinking. But one can only come up with so many jokes about the latest flavor of pop-tarts! Because currently it seems like the only thing you can talk about without being labeled a sexist, racist, or a bigot So I leave you with this Mrs Halliday. You keep listening. You keep being you, and FOR FUCKS SAKE LEAVE THAT PEN ON YOUR DESK! :P
This guy can bring tears to my face. He's so damn likeable
Ryan W maybe that’s why so many men kiss him on the mouth.
@@AverageHuman7026 most absolutely! I mean the man is just simply so irresistible! Sweet and alluring in every way! 😊❤️
I loved this dialog. I love the thinking process. I couldn't help but love each one of these persons.
Dear Mr Colbert you are the reason I stay late to watch your show. Thanks for putting smile on my face .
Could listen to him talk all day.
And it pisses me off how few these are 😔
Ditto my friend.
Colbert was absolutely brilliant here! Thanks.
Such a phenomenal human being. i know they both reject it, but he and John Stewart are like the uncle/professor leaders of our generation. so grateful for their humorous voices of sanity.
Colbert is very admirable
Great interview with an extremely thoughtful and intelligent man. Very insightful - "the buck stops here"- we'll soon see.
"The team itself is an illusion". So accurate and so true.
They don't make TV like this anymore. No sound bites, no pointless questions. Just two intelligent men talking about the world. Beautiful.
That's a fantastic point, which was almost overlooked due to how great content of the interview itself was.
Right on.
Thank GOD!!! For sane, thoughtful, reflective, insightful, sincere, funny, brilliant beings like both of these men and especial SC!!! Thank GOD for men like these during a presidency like the one about to unfold......
colbert is one of the reason life can still be sane.
Marcus S tar
You know who handed Trump the White House? Third-party voters. Fuck 'em.
(And yeah, Jill Stein is a cunt, but too inept to handle a war. If you were referring to Hillary, you're an idiot.)
Why wouldnt you, he's a sexy nerd man
I don't think Trump should silence anybody. You shouldn't root for a person to shut other people up. That's what dictators do. It's not the President's job to silence people speaking out against him. It's actually his job to preserve their right to speak out against him. Trump may take it upon himself to try to silence people anyway, but that would make him a really lousy president and extremely un-American. Also I think the idea of an audience of gibbons is hilarious.
Susan Joy Worker - oh, this is way beyond liking Hillary. Many non political people like me already have an exit plan...I'm out in March. Have fun with premier Putin
jesus colbert is so articulate
i love it
Sponge Cake he's highly intelligent, you ever hear him tell that story about getting fired from some job and he was walking around NY with a book of poetry by Brendan Behan I think, he's not Kimmel or Fallon.
Great interview, he's always so thoughtful. Happy New Year-- hopeful for a better year this time!
You two have a wonderful friendship that comes out every time you have an interview or event together!
Such a pleasant cerebral stimulation listening to this man speak! Love love love Stephen.
I really love their relationship - such a pure friendship. You can just see how much they genuinely enjoy each other's company
I admire that he acknowledges that he can forget that political divisiveness is a vice. Great interview!
Wow. This was actually one of my most favorite interviews I've ever watched.
This is one of the finest interviews I've ever seen, in addition to it being one of my favorite people in the world, Stephen Colbert. 27 minutes. Enjoy!
Stephen Colbert has such integrity. What a good guy. :) Love Dickerson, too.
He has none.
because he doesn't agree with your outlook? not very libertarian of you. But most who claim to be libertarians are full of shit republicans embarrassed by their party.
kevmarkpat Nope. Stephen Colbert all he did was toss ad-hominem at everyone besides Clinton. If you considered ad-hominems a form of integrity you're as much of a piece of trash as him.
People like him in the media world with their dyed hair that is receding are the reason why the country is divided so much.
Colbert is one of the most decent people around!
Suzanne Dahms In fantasy land.
I enjoy Face The Nation but I love Stephen Colbert and this was enlightening. He is a special person.
SC is so intelligent, charming, funny, a diplomat, humble, everything Trump is not. I would so much enjoy SC to really nail Trump, but he is too much a gentle man. I would love to see him as President one day!!
Jeanene Rivas lol fast foward one year not so gentle now
@@SelinaCat Thuggish buffoons like Trump deserve Neither gentleness or respect. ( if that's what you are referring to your post.
@@hapgood22 I was referring to how nowadays SC isn't so gentle and does really nail T every monologue. Never said I objected to him doing it. More pointing out an observation. There are plenty of places you can pick fights with T supporters if thats your bag but you're barking up the wrong tree.
SelinaCat dß
Two consummate professionals doing what they do best... The short questions to the point, the pause before answering, the interviewer allowing the pause and then actually listening to the interviewee ....and well it's Colbert
Colbert is a national treasure.
9:00 the humor is in gap between what someone says and what they do. explains why none of comedians had any good jokes about Sanders. messy hair and brooklyn accent was all they had to go on.
George Inotowok True that!
FACTSS!!!
George Inotowok how do you not get that bernie was just a sick pawn of hope, to bring unity to a dying dem party. he campaigned against his own values with Hillary ,up to the election, and people cheered him on while selling out ahahaha.
Cas what the hell are you on about? He campaigned against his beliefs? Senator Sanders had appeared weekly on the Thom Hartman radio program for years prior to the election. RUclips any Brunch with Bernie clip from years ago and it will sound exactly like a campaign speech from 2016. Educate yourself.
he campaigned for Hillary after demonizing politicians that buy elections. She is the worst culprit of raising money through the 1% to buy an election in history. All he talks about is the 1% but he works with the same people he is complaining about!
Stephen Colbert comes across in these interviews as a very nice, kind, humble man. I have warmed to him much more in the past two years. I did not like him in his first year as Late Show host, but 2016 was the change for me. A very thoughtful, caring, inclusive man.
Can't believe I missed this. Fantastic interview!!! I appreciate how Stephen pauses to think before answering. "[Belief] is a lens, it's not a prop."
I think Colbert will occupy the mount Rushmore of television legends with Carson and Letterman when all is said and done.
My favorite and most classy Colbert interview. Well done.
One of the wisest, funniest, ethical person in the US right now. Blessings, thanks for everything!
Rhetorical question: why are so many Colbert-haters even watching this video?
They love to hurt yourself?
We come to laugh and mock your leftist bullshit...our name is legion for we are many.
NeuroGeek they are just waiting for their meds to kick in. After they do, they will go play with themselves and think of their bloviating Cheeto of a leader and commit his every tweet to memory. For it is the word of the tRump. It's sad really. They just troll, but try to engage them in real conversation over real substantive issues, they run to their confederate flag blankie and scream about how Obama ruined their country and Hillary is a crook.😂😂😂😂😂. Yeah and you got yourself a real wiener, I mean winner, in Drumpf. One guy on another Colbert page actually called me an N***** lover when I defended the President. And then said he was a millionaire. Classy folks!!!
Joyce, thank you for that! Great comment & it made my day:) (PS: I'm a N--lover too!)
Rhetorical question: why are so many Colbert-lovers afraid of logical debate?
I'm born raised living in Limerick Ireland and Stephen's great uncle came from here, he was executed after the 1916 rebellion against the English, which means he has genuine Irish revolutionary blood flowing in his veins. Our train station is Colbert Station, with a hard T at the end of Colbert obviously.
Colbert=genius
Colbert is so incredibly articulate and smart. It soothes me to hear him speak, he's astounding.
Colbert, you are The Phial of Galadriel.
and Jon Stewart is the Star of Eärendil
Stewart/Colbert 2020
That would be life!
Trump's name not in the title. Barely any dislikes. Must be a coincidence.
Wilbur Jenkins This is an insightful comment
Huh. There mustbe so many people just hate-watching videos ready to pounce
Hectics184
He's about to be POTUS; there is no one in the world who should not be obsessing about him.
ryan morris Your complete sheepish dismissal of Trump's crony cabinet will reap his reward.
good interview
Zen buddhism helps people deal with Trump. Good luck everyone, may you be well.
ReadyMindsetGo amen.
ReadyMindsetGo and Taoism - the art of staying detached from the material world. I do my best:)
This was an incredible interview. Thank you for sharing it.
Great conversation between two very intelligent people! Love it!
Some serious wisdom thought out here
Jacob Smith you have to give credit to the interviewer, he asked him excellent questions, no fluff or stroking of egos here.
I love Stephen. He is so smart.
Stephen's point about teams: It forces you to question why you you decided to be on that team.
I love their friendship. You can see them like visibly appreciating one another's wit and company throughout the interview. I'm gonna aim to look at my friends like that more often.
love stephen he always has me in stitches. such a nice thoughtful caring person. happy new years stephen . god bless malena
Colbert is really holding back. u can almost feel his sadness and anticipation of bad shit coming for 2017. Smoke em if ya got em, people. I've already renewed my passport
What bad shit do you anticipate coming? I hear you liberals say this a lot, and I just don't see it. Considering Trump seems to want to make peace with Russia, rather than war like Clinton and Obama wants to do, doesn't that make things look brighter?
HDaviator - Without invoking Hillary, please don't...I'm not with her...just look at his past history of saying things and doing the opposite. This is a big game to him. He didn't even believe what he's saying. He's even said, yeah, I'm not saying such and such anymore...it doesn't play well. What do u think: doesn't play well means... haha. come on man. he is telling u himself. I'm not even a liberal...I'm not even into politics. Just look at hour this guy operates as a person. Step out of yourself and use critical thinking skills. suspend what u wanna believe and just observe his patterns over the last 20 years. Even a group of psychiatrists from Harvard have stepped forward yesterday and are begging Obama to have him examined, which I don't think is possible... haha. But come on. I'm not here to argue as a dem or republ...I'm looking at this guy as a person. He will not deliver for u...for me... for no one....but him. I'm not here to convince u. Just read up on the history of dictators. I'm not saying he will be a dictator, but so far all the red flags are there. Just be open to that possibility. I've already renewed my passport. I'm not taking chances. I would have voted for any other non party system disruptor....but not this guy. No one knows what's going on inside his head. He is capable of anything. I'm just glad i decided to never have kids.
I love all the idiots who claim that the Democrats want war with Russia... based on literally nothing.
They just believe it to be true.
Based on their rhetoric. Have you been living under a rock?
Andrew Watkins - I agree. I think ur comment was directed to the guy that answered me?
"An unchallenged belief is almost vestigial"
Holy shit that's Confucius level profound.
He's such a gift to humanity. I can listen to him talk all day and more
Gentlemen, this interview is ABSOLUTE PERFECTION! Dictionary com has a new example!
Colbert really is brilliant. Wow!
Beyon his humor, comedy and amazing sattire...he is a deeply thoughtful man who obviously cares a lot about this Nation. Thank you Stephen Colbert for all these years of entertainment and hopefully many more to come!
gotta love this guy. he's awesome.
hes awesome
Adore this man and everything he says and does. I'm in love.
so grateful for Stephen Colbert! :)
"Is there a pitch i don't wanna swing at? The one that's not being thrown" - (Colbert, 2016)
Stephen Colbert gives me, as a UK citizen, faith in the US. We here have our own Brexit shit so I do understand how most of you feel about Trump. May your god(s) protect you.
No ALBANO, actually most Americans are not happy about Trump, per voting totals. And once he takes office I think even fewer will be. I hope I'm wrong and he turns out to be a great Pres.
torputube Don't worry he will. If not we will be right back to the jihad funding organ harvesting condoning establishment in 4 years
torputube Yes!!!!!!
It surprises me every day how many insane individuals there are.
bluKnight43 True. Thanks
Great perspective on a belief and letting it through a filter and have it challenged. There should be no teams, there should be more determination based on facts!!!!
A nation is not its politics. A nation is the relationships between its people.
ryan magiera well put
The man is a genius.
I've been waiting for this!
Thank you for your humor in this dark time.
The pen interview that Stephen referring to is the one with Bill Maher when he served him a steak in a bowl. Haha
7 days of steven colbert! lmao i laughed so hard. they must be really good friends
Colbert love listening to this guy.
watched this thrice. still makes me just as happy as the first time
20:30 "The buck stops here" ROFL!
you hosted my father, thanx
Stephen Colbert...You Rock!! Thank You for keeping it real.
At least Stephen reflected on his mistake of picking a side. He was so up HC's behind it wasn' funny anymore...
Colbert is a genius. I really do enjoy his humor, but the surpring is that he has the hability to improvise combined with concomitantly being so sensible
Could literally listen to Stephen Colbert for hours
Stephen Colbert is the reason I am keeping my sanity these days. So sharp and intelligent. A oh so funny. I wish I was as good a human being that he is. Oh. This was a great interview. Thank you John Dickerson. Oh. Bill Maher is also keeping me sane these days as well. I love them both. They make me laugh out loud with nobody else in the room to laugh with. That is my “funny detector”. 😀
This was awesome. I am now a huge fan of both
Gotta love this man's humanity and willingness to self-reflect.
Quote from the Oxford English Dictionary website 'The Post-truth Era, by Ralph Keyes appeared in 2004, and in 2005 American comedian Stephen Colbert popularized an informal word relating to the same concept: truthiness, defined by Oxford Dictionaries as ‘the quality of seeming or being felt to be true, even if not necessarily true’. Post-truth extends that notion from an isolated quality of particular assertions to a general characteristic of our age'
stephen looks sad... i don't know if that's just the first time we see that side of him because he was in character, or if doing this show is taking too much from him, or if he's just getting old.
Tamar Kfir keen observation, I think he is tired and sad. Me too.
I think he is in shock like the rest of us, but, being the wonderful person we know him to be, he is dealing with it and slowly balancing back to normal. Love this guy and hope he's around for a long, long, long time!
I think it's just all the stuff going on this year. He's talking about issues that are pretty deflating. He always looks joyful though, even when he's sad
Tamar Kfir He is sad, u can feel it. He knows the chance of media and comedians being blacklisted, fired, etc...is a really possibility now. Welcome to the Macarthy days...yay!
sfar1 Yeah, it's so weird to watch monologues from just a few months ago. There's so much assurance. I get what you mean about there being no X and Y. It's hard not to feel a little helpless when nothing regarding politics seems to mean anything that it before
This is an excellent interview. Kudos to John!
I think Trump should visit the Statue of Liberty and read the New Colossus beneath her. Then reflect, deeply.
Brittany Miller Trump can't read. Like at least 71% of the people who voted for him. That's verified.
Raging Heretic Trump supporters aren't stupid. And they are not your enemies. Listen to Stephen.
Happy New Year!
Sarah Jones Speak for yourself. I view them as enemies, absolutely. What they believe in and support is indefensible and wrong. Period.
Sarah Jones I agree with raging heretic. tm when they overturn roe. v. wade. and red states make abortions illegal people will kill themselves. sometimes the right doesn't empathize. and when I call them evil for it, then they accuse me of not empathizing with them. I can empathize with you midwest, and the truth is you're lives are NOT THAT HARD. get over it.
Cameron Sipka "political divisiveness is a vice." picking sides is a seductive vice. You want to make your fellow citizens your enemy? That's your choice. I don't think it is going to have the result you would like.
Since this very moment I can tell that Stephen will join my favorite have to watch shows. Sadly, I can not follow him all the time as he speaks a quite fast English.
"SUNDAY TODAY" NEEDS COLBERT, FALLON, BEE, O'BRIEN, MEYERS, DEGENERES, HARRY CONNICK JR, OPRAH WINFREY, AND STEVE HARVEY AND JOHN DICKERSON ON!!!! 😀☺😊
Amazing interview!!
Stephen Colbert is still a guy I wish I could sit down and have a beer with someday. Just such a decent human being.
"Picking sides is a vice rather than picking ideas". Wise words.
He's so humble on this interview. Way to go Colbert!!!
I will be living on a steady diet of Colbert & Bill Maher while I'm in Milan, watching the U.S. beat itself up as it slowly goes down the toilet bowl. Everyone, ask yourself: what will u do? Will u stay and fight? or enjoy my time left on earth?
athensathens haha😁 - well, there is that option.
of all places milan, a country which has elected a trump twice in a row :)
aprofromuk - but that's point. I know that Italy is a pug headed Country, but the leaders there don't shape that country, the people do: it's still rich in culture and the people respect eachother as people. That doesn't exist currently in the US. Maybe the US can evolve out of its situation, if it survives. Italy was once horrible a thousand years ago, but it's people evolved... with exception of course, but it needed that much time.
lucky!
Jay Torraso Fly me to Italy! This place is getting scary
DO THIS EVERY YEAR PLEASE!!!! I LOVE STEPHEN COLBERT!!!! DO IT WITH SAMANTHA BEE, CONAN O'BRIEN, SETH MEYERS, JIMMY FALLON, JIMMY KIMMEL, ELLEN DEGENERES, HARRY CONNICK JR, AND THEN DEFINETLY STEVE HARVEY!!! 🇺🇸😀😁☺😊😊😊
Amy Girard the other late night hosts are cool, but Stephen Colbert is in a league all his own.
Amy Girard Steve Harvey?? LoL fuck that biggot
One of best parts of this year was seeing Sam get so much traction with these. I remember they were under a thousand views., and I was worried that the world was deeply fucked, due to its lack of listening to the good good, namely highly intelligent articulate people
The whole 'post truth' and going with your feeling over facts is front and centre in America and obiously linked to minds capable of strong religious beliefs. It's almost the definition of faith.
Mark Broomfield But we have held onto our republic for a couple hundred years . During most of that time people knew the bible thoroughly and had a deep faith. Maybe the problem is "cultural Christians" who say they believe but have no real understanding of what they believe.
bingo...religions which teach obey first and do not ask questions and discourage critical thinking and equality. It's an US vs THEM mentality and a Women obey your husbands culture--religions are very useful in making obedient unquestioning "consumers/workers/citizens" .....I have always admired the Jewish culture though, even though patriarchal for the most part, because arguing/questioning is seen as healthy and fun instead of "disrespectful".
Man. Beautiful. Thank you.
Great and sobering discourse, though "god" help us through this next year. Hoping orang-man doesn't start WWIII w/a tweet.
Stephen Colbert for President!
One thing for Donald Trump to read: the DSM-R
Jules Mekler That's for sure! I know that most Americans will have to Google what that is...but then again, that's the reason Trump is prez
Can you not generalize a large group of people? Thank you.
Nope, I'm totes cool with it.AnEvoultionaryLevelAbove HumanXenununubitch
I'm a fan of Colbert but I thought his shows since the election have been 'angry' which has been a turnoff for me. I understand the frustration but getting angry is only deepening the divide. I didn't get that from this interview though. He seemed level headed and rational. Brilliant guy.
Eric Mooney, so you want to be happy about trump to unite the country its dangerous to have such a big compromise of your own humanity.
I don't sense any anger in his show. More like bemusement and enjoyment.
Most humorists are having a difficult time finding humor in the train wreck that is Trump. It is a very frightening time and noone wants to 'normalize' his behavior or make someone so dangerous appear acceptable. It's a tough row to hoe for comedians.
Eric Mooney the hillary campaign stopped paying him.
That's not an accident. As it happens, a lot of people are angry about the election outcome and he is providing some catharsis, which is important.
Im impressed !
Stephen Colbert is such an intelligent thoughtful man. I love when he is in character, but he seems like a really nice guy out of character.
Steven! Thanks for putting in a plug for the metric system! We need more of that.
