    As a psychotherapist, I was really struck by Mr Colbert saying "I put the pen away, and the interview became a conversation". It's absolutely true, and illustrates what's lacking in so much political discourse: We are afflicted by a desire to win. In a therapy session, if I'm holding a pen, it places me in a position of having more power than my client. However, when I put down the pen and the yellow pad of paper, and we sit together face to face, I can remain in a "not knowing" stance, and real possibility opens. Among the many things that are disturbing about politics these days is this: the failure of curiosity, of willingness to listen, and of openness to change our opinions. Until we educate ourselves to really listen to people who aren't just like us, we will be stuck in this divisive and poisonous atmosphere. Stephen Colbert is brilliant because he has the intelligence, the humility, and the humanity to recognize this. Watching his show for the last couple of months has been one of the ways I've managed my grief and disappointment; I am truly grateful to him.

      Kate Halliday. . Agreed. I'm a spiritual director and I don't take any notes. I think that's intimidating and puts me in a position of being way too much in charge. I prefer the conversation as well.

    • @vileguile4
      @vileguile4 7 лет назад +4

      Kate Halliday interesting.. hmm. I work at place where we try to make people stronger, more independent and happier. Most suffer from some kind of mental disorder and have been away from work for a long time. I often bring pen and paper just to show the. That I really care of what they say. Often they're just given empty promises. At least that's how it was until I got there.
      But maybe this strategy is wrong. I want to show myself to be on an equal level yet reassure them that they'll be well taken care of and maybe most of all that they're important and that they matter.
      At the same time I need to show some kind of authority as people who are not feeling well my get out of hand and I. The one sorting those situations out. It can also feel safe for them to have a constant and reliable figure which authority can give.
      Its complex! I'll think of that pen though! Best would be if someone else could take notes though but we don't have the budget nor the personnel for that. Thanks.

      I feel the same way with my psychologist as I do in a restaurant. You may be confident you know what I want well enough without writing it down but I'm paying for this service and I hate having to keep repeating myself. I'd just feel more at ease if I saw you writing it down. Lol

      I'd rather pay $550 dollars, an hour for someone who really listens, and tries to help me. Over someone who just writes everything I say down on a piece of paper, and shoves my story into some old filing cabinet to possibly be continued. Sometimes having a real conversation once a week is all you really need to get through the rest of it. I hate to bring this up. But it is relative. Strippers, and prostitutes make a shit ton of money for this very reason. When you're alone and you feel unwanted, or like you're less of a human being. Sometimes you want someone to make you feel like you're important. As for Kate's comment. She's right about Colbert. Speaking from the view of a not so famous comedian. I will attest to the fact that we are the most interesting cases. "That's not funny." Has been a statement that has plagued our existence since the days of old. And if anyone really looks into it they will find that we are all depressed, and we each suffer PTSD to some degree. We're soldiers! Not to the extent that we're overly strong, or we just barrel through obstacles like a Rhino plowing through a bunny rabbit. But in the sense that we not only battle ourselves, and our own problems. But we point them out as jokes about ourselves, and you laugh, and we laugh. Then we point at you, and point out your flaws in a funny manner then we laugh, and you laugh. Then at the end of the show when everyone's laughing, and walking out. We know we did our job. However to end this long ass rant that I hope you're reading Mrs. Halliday. Comedians are likely the most genuine people in the entertainment business. But we're a dying breed, because life has just gotten too offensive to people. Observational humor is becoming a thing of the past. We try, and try, and try to blend in with this new way of thinking. But one can only come up with so many jokes about the latest flavor of pop-tarts! Because currently it seems like the only thing you can talk about without being labeled a sexist, racist, or a bigot So I leave you with this Mrs Halliday. You keep listening. You keep being you, and FOR FUCKS SAKE LEAVE THAT PEN ON YOUR DESK! :P

      I don't think Trump should silence anybody. You shouldn't root for a person to shut other people up. That's what dictators do. It's not the President's job to silence people speaking out against him. It's actually his job to preserve their right to speak out against him. Trump may take it upon himself to try to silence people anyway, but that would make him a really lousy president and extremely un-American. Also I think the idea of an audience of gibbons is hilarious.

What do u think: doesn't play well means... haha. come on man. he is telling u himself. I'm not even a liberal...I'm not even into politics. Just look at hour this guy operates as a person. Step out of yourself and use critical thinking skills. suspend what u wanna believe and just observe his patterns over the last 20 years. Even a group of psychiatrists from Harvard have stepped forward yesterday and are begging Obama to have him examined, which I don't think is possible... haha. But come on. I'm not here to argue as a dem or republ...I'm looking at this guy as a person. He will not deliver for u...for me... for no one....but him. I'm not here to convince u. Just read up on the history of dictators. I'm not saying he will be a dictator, but so far all the red flags are there. Just be open to that possibility. I've already renewed my passport. I'm not taking chances. I would have voted for any other non party system disruptor....but not this guy. No one knows what's going on inside his head. He is capable of anything. Quote from the Oxford English Dictionary website 'The Post-truth Era, by Ralph Keyes appeared in 2004, and in 2005 American comedian Stephen Colbert popularized an informal word relating to the same concept: truthiness, defined by Oxford Dictionaries as ‘the quality of seeming or being felt to be true, even if not necessarily true’. Post-truth extends that notion from an isolated quality of particular assertions to a general characteristic of our age'

      aprofromuk - but that's point. I know that Italy is a pug headed Country, but the leaders there don't shape that country, the people do: it's still rich in culture and the people respect eachother as people. That doesn't exist currently in the US. Maybe the US can evolve out of its situation, if it survives. Italy was once horrible a thousand years ago, but it's people evolved... with exception of course, but it needed that much time.

    The whole 'post truth' and going with your feeling over facts is front and centre in America and obiously linked to minds capable of strong religious beliefs. It's almost the definition of faith.

      Mark Broomfield But we have held onto our republic for a couple hundred years . During most of that time people knew the bible thoroughly and had a deep faith. Maybe the problem is "cultural Christians" who say they believe but have no real understanding of what they believe.

      bingo...religions which teach obey first and do not ask questions and discourage critical thinking and equality. It's an US vs THEM mentality and a Women obey your husbands culture--religions are very useful in making obedient unquestioning "consumers/workers/citizens" .....I have always admired the Jewish culture though, even though patriarchal for the most part, because arguing/questioning is seen as healthy and fun instead of "disrespectful".
