Back in the 60s and 70s I was good friends with the Van Doren family and still keep in touch with some of them. The shoe company was started with the idea that you could go into a Vans store anywhere in LA and Orange Counties region of SoCal and be appropriately fitted for a style you were interested in. If they didn't have it they would make it overnight and deliver it back to the store nearest you and you could pick it up at no extra charge. On some occasions I would help delivery shoes in the middle of the night for orders placed earlier in the day. The shoes at that time were considered budget custom shoes......hence why Spicoli was wearing the checkerboard pattern.
They somewhat still are that way. I've ordered stuff on Friday and have gotten it delivered on Saturday and maybe because I buy so much, they constantly send me free stuff. I got in my order the Vans Branded "jenga" set with my order without redeeming any of the family points so that's pretty cool how close they pay attention to customers who buy frequently.

The failure in the heel happens LOONNGG after the olie pad and toe area wears out when actually using these as skate shoes. This happens to all skate shoes and it just means time for a new pair, it wouldn't make sense to design a skate shoe that long outlives its olie pad.
I like these shoes, some of the best ever made. I haven't had a heel issue yet but then again I don't skate. These are wider than Converse and seem to have more cushioning inside. The Vans Sk8 Hi are actually really wide for standard shoes. These also have arch support which converse do not from what I can see at least for standard chucks. Some people who have more narrow feet might like the standard converse better. These have less seams around the toe area though I still have to use the duct tape to cover those but its a less serious problem than with converse. The material used on the back of the heel feels fantastic.

How? I own one pair of vans (platform authentics) and they're my babies. They're comfortable, easy to style and really quick to put on. Just watching this almost made me cry =Dd
I've had a million pairs of vans and they have never failed in that area
If we’re interested in sending you a pair of shoes for this series, would it be possible?
I have a pair of Vivobarefoot Gobi ll leather shoes, a leather desert boot made of well leather, that i can spare as are still new. This is a barefoot shoe, but i feel this would be perfect for the leather enthusiasts.
They have to keep that low price point, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would pay $200 for the same quality Made in USA Vans I wore in the early 1990's....
For a second I thought you actually murdered a Smurf!!!
No I think he said he killed a Smurf.
I'm so glad you are doing sneakers as well as boots.
I would love to see a comparison between popular white leather sneakers (e.g. Adidas Stan Smith, Nike Air Force 1, Reebok Club C).
8:38 we feared for your finger! LOL
same
I’ve only ever had 2 pairs of vans, I’ve had the Baker x Vans and the supreme x Vans and they’re probably the best skating shoes I’ve had
It was so painful as a person who wears Vans to see him cut into the shoe like that. It really killed me.
Same, as you can tell i need a new pair ha ha
Hahaha you are wearing junk
it van.... endless production....
It hurts me to *pay good money* for a pair of new Sk8 Hi's just to have the soles fall off in the dryer after the third wash. 🤕
Not me, bought these and they fucking killed my feet, so uncomfortable feels like I’m walking barefoot on concrete
Wow.. so many years and I didn't know what I was wearing, great video 👍🏻
Honestly I would be willing to pay twice the price if it meant more shoes were made here instead of off shore.
Congrats on the sponsorship!
Ain’t nobody gonna talk about how the cat has waves
fr
Sk8 hi are my all time favorite sneaker. I have of 55 pairs in different color ways and limited editions like Nightmare on Elm Street and diff Halloween ones
Get well soon, Toaster
Congrats on sponsorships this year, keeps things going! I'm looking forward to cutting some classic Adidas sneakers ;)
Love your videos man, but you hurt me with the "old skool hi top" 😂
grayson quarles yeah the old skools are midtops
@@InFamXYT still not quite, but I can see why you say that, search Sk8 mids on google
If you go for Converse do a P.F. Flyers next. It's going to be really interesting comparison having in mind all the history between the two brands.
super glue !
RM Williams bro best boot ever! I’ve just finishing stomping around India, turkey and Europe in mine and there’s no comparison.
Didn't know they were made of leather
Brilliant exactly what I asked for in the last cut in half comments. Love to see more if you get the chance like old school airwalks/vision/converse as well as new school skate shoes like etnies, Emerica, es, Osiris, dvs etc to see the difference in construction/quality.
Sacrilege! But ok, in the interest of research, I watched the whole thing!
sinner!
John Brian Right! But I couldn't look away
You can absolutely glue the soles back to the foxing, just use some high strength rubber glue and tape it down while it dries. Don't use CA glue, it destroys the rubber.
I rebuilt the air cushioned heel of my favorite Timberlands this way. Worked for at least a year!
"baggy jeans with embroiderer on them"
So Jincos? It's ok dude, everyone is cringe at 10.
Have you ever thought about doing a tear down of Harley Davidson boots? Would love too see. Love your videos about wallets & shoes & everything else. Have a good one Sir & toastie!
Thanks for the suggest!
Congratulations with your first sponsor, like your videos. Looking forward to when you start dismantling the red wing! Hope you cut through the red wing postman shoe...
Yessss! Do the Fjallraven backpack video! Be really interested :)
Congrats on your first sponsored video!
I got the all black one. Is my first ever! Later on I'll try to save to cope the classic converse
Congrats it’s awesome to watch your channel grow.🍻
