Great Video. Driving with the tailgate down actually increases drag though, by about 8% to 10%, proven in wind tunnel studies. With the tailgate up, it creates a vortex in the bed that keeps the air up and over the tailgate. A toneau cover would reduce drag though.
I didn't know that, but now that you explained it, that does make sense. Having that flat cut off in back and further up compared to a longer, "pointey-er" break away in back probably also helps the air break away quicker/cleaner.

mythbusters did an episode on the tail gate aerodynamics and if it was better with it down. but it actually create's more drag down than it being up. pretty cool

You get more turbulent air with the tailgate down. FYI Nascar Trucks dont have an open tray/bed. They have a solid cover over the tray and a large ducktail style spoiler. Most serious drag racing trucks run a similar set up or just have the tailgate up. There's science behind it. Whereas people tend to just think that tailgate down is better.
