Isobel Baillie's interpretation of this song when I'm depressed or feeling down which has the most meaning for me. Her angelic voice and dramatic reading of this work brings to me the encouragement from the scripture to carry on. I'm also impressed with the photos showing her growth from a young woman to one who is honored by her country. My thanks to Roy Gardner for posting this video.
I defy any modern singer to sing with this simplicity and sincerity, and the purity of voice. A truly wonderful recording of a great singer who should be remembered.
So so so true. Dame Isobel is 'sans pareil' I think nobody before or after this recording has captured the 'divine' rendering of this inspirational work.
Like you I will ask that Dame Isobel's rendition of this breath taking uplifting piece be sung at my funeral. Born in 1936 I have distinct memories of it being played on an old fashioned gramophone during the War -veery scratchy sound but Dame Isobel's crystalline voice overcame the poor technical qualities! The sound of this piece has remained with me and I am so very happy that I re-discovered it again You Tube. By the way the Dame Elsie Morrison (Australian singer of almost the same era as Dame Isobel) runs this one very close! Both sang with a purity of vocal line - no embellishments favoured y some later singers who think or thought they could improve on the Handelian original. No they can't!!
Traditional old school style. Especially on the high notes she used restraint and control with ease... You can hear her natural simplicity..like she's freely expressing her voice with no complications.. May Her Spirit Rest In Peace..
Yes! And notice also how clear, strong, and lovely her low tones are. So few young sopranos today have either, in this manner. . .the manner of the Old School.
Recorded in 1941 at the time of the Blitz. Death on all sides but the music is about Jesus conquering death and offering us the opportunity to enjoy life with Him after death.
Blessings from Taiwan 🇹🇼😇🧧💖🥰 What a BEAUTIFUL song 💖 to REMIND us that our redeemer lives so we will have ETERNAL HOPE 😇🥳 Hope EVERYONE will VISIT Taiwan when the pandemic is over. 🇹🇼🥳
This aria belonged to Dame Isobel in a very special way, just as He Was despised and O thou that tellest were special in the repertoire of Kathleen Ferrier. Sometimes singers identify and are identified with a piece in particular. I know that my redeemer is one such piece.
Now, this lady sings this anthem as if she actually "knows" God, and that makes the difference in her singing. She has real FAITH in God, and she sings it with "conviction". Hallelujah! Thank you Isobel Ballie, thank you!!!!
So today lots of people have plenty of material possessions but not so many have true faith in God. One will take us safely through death, the other wont.
This is the fourth of her five recordings - the first 3 were unpublished, and the last - in 1946 -was part of Sargent's first recorded Messiah. This one is the best.
She is as Scottish as could be, by birth, by looks, by mannerism but, writing as an Englishman, the UK was blessed to have her. She was a good friend of Ferrier by all accounts, although she seemed to have quite a different personality.
Id never even heard of her. She had such a lovely, clear voice. She and Flagstad are both incredible, but totally different quality. Ballie's voice is much lighter.
I too was born in 1941. I bought the shellac record in 1958, and still have it, to be played rarely and very carefully. My favourite passage from the Old Testament. Thank you for this.
Yes, Job 19/25. I consider Charles Jennens to be a master theologian. The verse seems rather obscure in the passage, & thanks to him (& Handel!) it is now set up on a pedestal where it belongs. Then of course Paul is not to be overlooked. I Cor 15/20. Job's Redeemer did indeed stand upon the earth.
It was the late Alan Keith on his Sunday night Radio 2 programme who introduced me to Dame Isobel and Kathleen Ferrier. They are two absolutely fabulous singers. They are both at the top of my greatest singers list, thank you. I love this particular recording.
Whenever I feel low and downhearted I turn to this magnificent rendtion of this truly inspiring piece so so beatifully sung br Dame Isobel and my spirits are lifted and I find the strength to go on.
Perfect Ochestrated & Perfect Solo.. Am very much imppressed with how it started Strong, firmly but smoothy Ooh Handel may the Almighty God rest your Soul in eternal Peace. AMEN AMEN AMEN
As I can only give 1 thumbs up ...I gave about 229 thumbs up by giving all the comments a thumb up. Thnks mr Gardner fot uploading the Heavens Divine !!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I was also born in 1941 like the other person. I just listened to it on my tablet with good sound. This is my favorite from Handel's Messah. My mother used to sing every year at Christmas in the choir. The comments by others have helped me feel better...
My mother, married just weeks before the war, saw my father volunteer for the airforce and for most of the next five years she did not know if he was still alive. My mother, and tens of thousands of other brave young women.
Exactly. It does not have the trills and turns which modern sopranos put in because they cannot maintain a simple line with superb legato. Handel does not require any additions!
Glorious! I am old enough, born in 1939, to remember hearing her on the radio, or wireless as we called it at the time. For my grandmother there was no other singer like Isobel Baillie, and all had to stop while we listened to the wonderful sound of her voice.
I remember listening on the wireless during the war years, I was born in 1935 and I have only just rediscovered this wonderful Lady. Thank you for this rendition.
"Yet again Dame Isobel's touches my soul with her non pareil singing of "I know that My redeemer Liveth" Why this overwhelming piece sang by Dame Isobel is not not given greater prominence by broadcasters at Easter is beyond my understanding! If there is a Heaven and if I get there she will be singing it for me when I arrive.
a legendary recording still first choice of many, .and how nice to be free of "gilding the lily " decoration. With a voice and music as beautiful as this who needs it.!
That's nonsense! A singer's religious beliefs have nothing to do with the timbre of their voices or their technical ability. Do you think that Catholics sing it better than Protestants or vice versa?
What a truly wonderful rendition of this great aria. Just perfectly sung with such sincerity and beauty. Thank you so very much isabel baillie. Inspiritational
Purity of tone, vocal control, and meaningful intonation. Were opera singers taught better in the days when microphones were not necessary for a singer to project and fill an opera house with music?
My father was taught by her. She sang at my parents' wedding. Every wedding of my parents include her. She bought them a bath mat and toilet mat as wedding presents.
Ida Harries . I too want this beautiful rendering of I Know my Redeener Liveth played at my funeral . There are so many lovely recordings of this aria but there is no question hers is outstandingly the best. Beautiful beautiful pure singing. Thank you for letting us here it.
Beautiful. So pleased to find this on here: thank you Roy Gardner. Isobel Baillie was the singing teacher of one who taught me, and thousands of others, and she always said how wonderful she was, both in voice and character. Not an ornament in sight: unfashionable, but so much more respectful, in my view, to the wonderful text.
1941. When deadly peril encompassed the world. But all was not lost and right was still in the ring and growing in strength. And this amazing music was created. Does anyone know the orchestra or conductor?
I think a word should be added in praise of the orchestra also. A very moving experience all round. Especially considering the time it was made. I was born in 1944 .but I feel as though time is somehow repeating itself!
Jim Reilly Uniquely beautiful voices will never fade into oblivion. Such a poignant wartime recording as this, when Britain was facing destruction, encouraged us to keep the faith.
Perfection. That’s the only word for it
Magnifique !

A song sung by a woman 80 years ago. Still just as beautiful as it was back then
Baillie's voice, that of a nightingale.
Quite beautiful. So pure and clear. Thank you for uploading.
The soloist voice is fabulous! What a comfort to all Christians!
I agree with those who have said they never heard this sung so well. Absolutely Beautiful
This was her signature aria. She sang it more than a thousand times in concert.
She said....and I quote " never sing louder than lovely"....and she never did.....lovely indeed....thank you 😚
Un pur enchantement !
I defy any modern singer to sing with this simplicity and sincerity, and the purity of voice. A truly wonderful recording of a great singer who should be remembered.

TheDeepCSailor -Right on
Her singing is so perfect and pure, the diction so sincere that it caused me to catch my breath. Your description precisely captures my thoughts, too.
I absolutely agree with you, just wonderful! She was indeed a believer in Jesus Christ, hallelujah!
*_And the exquisite Kathleen Ferrier too ..._*
Beautiful. I get a constant tingly feeling. She touches my soul.
To my shame I had never heard of her until hearing this - but what a Divine introduction. Heavenly voice Heavenly sent. Unsurpassable. Joy.
I don't understand it, the lady is new to me too!!
Such a pure, natural voice! ❤️
My sister continue to sleep until the great day of our Lord Jesus Christ. He shall raise you up to be with Him
tears poured down my face. 1941 the year i was born. I want Isobel Baillie singing this at my funeral at my funeral xx

Wonderful
I find Emma Kirkby has a similar appeal because if the simple elegance of her voice. Just lets the sound flow out from her.
Recorded in 1941 at the time of the Blitz. Death on all sides but the music is about Jesus conquering death and offering us the opportunity to enjoy life with Him after death.
Such Clarity , Purity and Nobility. Simply Perfect. Oldies but Goodies. I know My redeemer liveth rendition Best I ever heard.
This is the most perfect rendition of this piece ever recorded. Isobel Baillie's perfect diction is literally heavenly.
Aye!
Possible. And I only found this singer today (having known the song for so long)! Always new - old- gems to be found on the internet.
and nice loud volume - thank you.
Such a beautiful and expressive voice.
Si est bella
I have to agree, I’ve never heard this done so beautifully ✝️✝️✝️
A memorable voice and her diction is unbelievable. What a blessing that this recording has been preserved for posterity.

My mother sang in a choir with her, many years ago. Wonderful. Thank you. J
Such clarity, every single word crystal clear. Surely the best singer Scotland has ever produced.
Johnnie M -for az long az we can tell :)
Not rushed. A lot of classical music played too quickly now imo mirroring the pace of life today.
I entirely agree. Performers these days turn everything into a jolly jig.
Life is such fun!@@ianclarke1852
Nice comment. But Lulu wasn't bad either! lol.
Now, this lady sings this anthem as if she actually "knows" God, and that makes the difference in her singing. She has real FAITH in God, and she sings it with "conviction". Hallelujah!

The voice of an Angel of God.

So beautiful, it brings tears. God is Love. Love is only God.
How pure, sung with such feeling.
Brings back the war years in UK , sheer beauty and clarity of the English voice......also Kathleen Ferrier who I also weep for.
She is as Scottish as could be, by birth, by looks, by mannerism but, writing as an Englishman, the UK was blessed to have her. She was a good friend of Ferrier by all accounts, although she seemed to have quite a different personality.
me too
She gives value and time to sing each word perfectly. Each word savours God's glory. Lovely.
Id never even heard of her. She had such a lovely, clear voice.
She and Flagstad are both incredible, but totally different quality. Ballie's voice is much lighter.
For me, this is the best version of this song. Everything about it - the voice, the musical accompaniment - I mean everything is impeccable 😍
There are tears running down my face. The voice is so pure and unforced that I imagined it was an angel singing.
Me too
I agree, from the depth of my heart
Only mankind was given the opportunity to be redeemed !
Invokes a deep nostalgic feeling and has an authentic quality of what the original performance must have sounded like.
Impressive great analog recorded sound !!!

Dame Isobel Baillie: a pure, radiant voice of great sweetness that never fails to deeply arouse my emotions.

Perfection personified, after all these years still far and away the best rendition of this beautiful song.
The clarity in her voice is breath taking
It’s so interesting to listen to these antique recordings of standard pieces. They’re indicators of how musical tastes change over time.
No atheist can sing this aria convincingly. This is perfection through faith.
True. But I think, if they open their heart to it truly, they may find that faith.
