The problem Seagal ran into in Japan was he had taken over his Japanese wife's dojo and was running it. Which is unheard of having a westerner run an Japanese dojo. When Seagal came back to the US he was still married to his Japanese wife with whom he had children with and started fooling around here and then eventually got married to Kelly LeBrock and was basically a bigamist. According to the Japanese wife Seagal has never reconnected with her or his Japanese chidlren ( this was according to an older documentary).
Anything with Edward Norton I could listen to all day, but him talking about the most unintentionally funny man ever? Thats just the cherry on top. Its almost weird how respectful he is.
He and Rogan are appreciating how cool they thought Seagal was in the 80s, but they both know what a joke he became. You have to remember that in the 80s martial arts movies were all about flashy kicks with Karate Kid, Chuck Norris, etc, but Seagal came in and made martial arts strikes seem short, sharp and brutal. On top of that the plot of the movie revolves around CIA drug trafficking, the mafia, and an ex Vietnam vet Chicago cop, rather than a martial arts tournament.
@@kulsevdasi I agree. It's a shame Seagal couldn't just be a down to earth guy. He'd probably still be in mainstream movies if he stayed fit and acted like Jason Statham, Liam Neeson, and a bunch of other action stars who are cool in interviews. Instead, Seagal thinks that if people doubt his martial arts skills that he won't get respected anymore, but it would actually be the opposite. If he just said "it's fake, but it's fun" people would like him.
Norton is being almost ridiculously respectful and mild. And I don't mean by not bringing up present day Seagal. But the way he phrases everything. Like Ed: "you know there was a little.. " Joe: "controversy?" Ed: "well.. you know how it is .. with different schools of thought" Not even wanting to say that people were unhappy he just refers to how we all know there will be issues when people disagree on fundamental ideas and how much drama there is in martial arts. Interesting how people frame him as difficult to work with. Sounds like he's just very stern and difficult when he knows he's right.
Seagal’s first wife basically opened the school in Japan. And there’s a story where his black belt in Aikido may have been awarded by a judge who fell asleep during his demonstration. Also the way he runs in Above the Law (when he’s chasing some dude), should have been a red flag that something was seriously wrong. Still though at one point in order to further his career the dude set out to meet Kelly LeBrock, who every young guy wanted at the time after that Weird Science movie. And he not only met her, but he married her and had a kid with her. And this was before he was a movie star I believe.
Actually 🤔...I think Seagal got with LeBrock RIGHT after she basically starred in one of those early Seagal movies. And Alissa LeBrock is their daughter (who's in her mid 20s) and is a big girl model. Has her mom's looks and, yeah, her dad's body so....And yes, Seagal's 1st wife, her parents originally owed that dojo in which his wife inherited. Whether Seagal's name WAS EVER on the place? IS really, anyone's guess. But yeah, he evidently was, one of the 1st "white American dudes" to "instruct Aikido in Japan" for sure.
I've heard both Edward Norton and Steven Seagal on TV here in Japan. Norton didn't speak a lot, but his vocabulary and pronunciation of Japanese words (in English sentences) was pretty good. Seagal can do interviews and TV commercials in good Japanese, and with a Kansai accent. Not commenting on their martial arts skills or their commitment to the teachings of Mother Church, just what I've heard them do in Japanese on TV.
Very interesting. I love Ed Norton and I love hating Steven but assuming you're not just making shit up (which I have no idea why you would about that) I've gotta give ol chunky some credit lol.
Even reluctant folks will grab some local "lingo" if emersed for any time, anywhere. Japanese is so different to our ear but it still holds true. Their myriad dialect even become obvious. I recall an associate from Switzerland that lived in California for years, spoke English very well, but when we traveled around the South he had one hell of a time...
It's both. I'm not saying Aikido is some great, practical defense in street fights, but they're in a class. And they are doing/practicing EXACTLY what you're saying. The person in the middle (SS) is attempting to quickly interpret, react and employ an Aikido response to each attacker (who should be doing different things), while the people coming at him are practicing breakfalls and movements that would normally be used to avoid having an arm/wrist broken, were the move employed full-force/full-speed. It's not meant to be 5 people trying to take people down as fast as they can, or to simulate a real-world street fight, like many people seem to believe. I don't know if those people have never taken an Aikido class, but it helps to understand what's actually happening and why before making judgements.

Having taken Akido courses in college I will say it was probably one of the least effective & most unrealistic of the martial arts. For joint locks I would've rather taken Hapkido (before MMA caught on).
Aikido is aimed to be much more about mental conditioning and understanding how to use your balance and weight against an opponent. Someone who can truly grasp the overall concept and then mix it with other more practical martial arts has an advantage. Aikido on it's own is not very combat efficient, which you learn kind of early, as the whole mantra behind it is to avoid conflict if possible. But to say it is useless is like saying those boxing classes that focused on footwork were a waste of time. It is definitely not for people who want to learn to " fight ". But if you want to know how to avoid the fight in the first place it's a good martial art.
@@meninpapin I've taken Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Hapkiddo & Akido. Sorry but of these that I learned, Akido was the least realistic. Instructor aside, it wasn't what would help in a fight.

At that point he's older and you're competing with Jackie Chan, Scott Adkins, Michael Ja White, etc, etc. You think people will pay to see you do the same shit you been doing for 2 decades prier. His earlier potential that you speak of was wasted by bad career decisions. He'll even tell you that.
Such a good actor, he never used stunt doubles to walk down stairs for him or any of that.
He’s the man
The problem Seagal ran into in Japan was he had taken over his Japanese wife's dojo and was running it.
I remember someone says seagal ran to japan to escape the military draft
@@puepole Yeah, no doubt. I just appreciate so much the way Edward Norton behaves as a human being, apart from his genius as an artist.
Like
Ed: "you know there was a little.. "
Joe: "controversy?"
Ed: "well.. you know how it is .. with different schools of thought"
Not even wanting to say that people were unhappy he just refers to how we all know there will be issues when people disagree on fundamental ideas and how much drama there is in martial arts.
Interesting how people frame him as difficult to work with. Sounds like he's just very stern and difficult when he knows he's right.
@@puepole idk if its fake, it's just that what he practices isn't all that practical

He has several black belts. Did the judges always fall asleep?

I've heard both Edward Norton and Steven Seagal on TV here in Japan. Norton didn't speak a lot, but his vocabulary and pronunciation of Japanese words (in English sentences) was pretty good. Seagal can do interviews and TV commercials in good Japanese, and with a Kansai accent. Not commenting on their martial arts skills or their commitment to the teachings of Mother Church, just what I've heard them do in Japanese on TV.
"Commitment to teachings of mother church"? AFAIK Seagal is buddhist and Norton doesn't practice any religion...

Seems to me this is more about the assailants practicing their falling skills.
@@MorvoldPress 10/10 comment
Yeah if that's how people attacked you in the street then Seagal would be a genius lol
Where the hell is Edward Norton these days? He is such a good actor.
He was blacklisted due to difficulty working with him. Lucky for him he invested well in Uber and some others. Estimated net worth is $300 million dollars.
He is notorious as a nightmare to work with, which Norton himself seemed to aware of but apparently couldnt help himself from being, well, himself.
He was great in primal fear. Man he was good
@@korawitbuttramee618
He’s not so much “a nightmare” as much as he’s very controlling and tends to inject his own direction into projects, which alienates a lot of people. The problem there is that when you look at the list of some of the things he’s creatively interfered with, you’ll find he actually made choices that benefitted some of those projects, particularly American History X, so it’s hard to hate on him for it, imo
@@BareBandSubscription yeah, if he's "notorious" for butting into production/writing/directing then that's obviously a good thing, cause he's in some great movies.

Segal’s got more hair now than he had then!!
I think he got some hair transplant or hair growth treatment like minoxidil.
He was heavily balding but got a hair transplant in the 90s but since the technology behind them wasnt so great back then, his hairline still ended up looking very thin and unnatural. So he started using hair loss concealer to fix his hairline, which actually can help make receding hairlines look a lot better when used in moderation. Having taken Akido courses in college I will say it was probably one of the least effective & most unrealistic of the martial arts. For joint locks I would've rather taken Hapkido (before MMA caught on).
You probably had shit instructors
