- We’re really excited to launch our new format for osmose: the “Creative Tutorials” series!
In this first episode, pro film scorer Josh Madoff will show you 7 essential osmose tips aimed at kickstarting inspiration, no matter what your keyboard background is. Beginners and pros are welcome alike!
Thing #1 Osmose sensitivity: did you know how sensitive Osmose is? It reacts to the slightest touch, allowing you to modulate the sound in a precise yet highly expressive way.
Thing #2 Aftertouch and gestures: press harder on a key to make it sound deeper. Each preset will react differently to aftertouch, and that’s what makes this feature so special: it offers a true expressive experience. Just like every Osmose’s gestures, it’s completely independent per key.
Thing #3 Pitch-bend: get an acoustic-like sound by adding a very delicate vibrato with pitch-bend. Just wiggle your key and adjust the modulation to bend your notes!
Thing #4 MPE Arpeggiator: this unique feature offers a new way of using arpeggiator, tracking each note you’re playing individually. You can then bend or wiggle each key, use the aftertouch or set the tempo internally.
Thing #5 Pressure Glide: set a minimal interval and everything in that interval will glide seamlessly between two notes based on relative pressure. You can even get multiple glides at the same time!
Thing #6 The internal synth engine: within each preset, there’s seven macros you can use to easily change and shape the sound. Every sound is very flexible, so that you can distort them in every way you need.
Thing #7 Pedals: Osmose’s way of handling pedals is very unique. Get 0 to 127 dynamic control with your foot, without blocking the keyboard, and play around a second chord sequence while playing freely with your two hands.

There are levels to this shit, folks. Josh is a ninja! The pedals running sostenuto is huge, and this was also the best explanation ive seen of the gestural controls and the intervals/bending concept! Exceptional piece of content!
Thanks a lot, we're gonna release more videos like that. Stay tuned!
It was all the videos of Josh using the Osmose that convinced me to buy one - the two with Anthony Marinelli and the amazing ContinuuCon demo.
You will bond with your Osmose in a unique way. Extraordinary instrument. I can't imagine not having one now.
@@asynchronicity This right there. This is why we work so hard 🥹🤍🤍
I'm definitely inspired. What a wonderful demonstration! You have really applied yourself to learning the capabilities of the instrument. It's clear that I under-use my Osmose by a large amount... I need to fix that!
This is the kind of video that should have been released at launch instead of all those "artists play Osmose" videos that most people don't seem to care that much about. But better late than never.
Word
Now that's what you call a demo. My god what an instrument and what an intelligent presentation !
Thanks a lot :D Josh really nailed that demo!
This is awesome! Love it!
This is excellent and manages to explore many aspects of the Osmose that dont really show up in a lot of the videos that came out since its launch. I've owned one since launch but this video managed to make me excited about it all over again. Especially since I like to use it as a MPE controller with other synths, and things like the pressure glide and arpeggiator are coming to the MPE MIDI output in the next firmware version.
So happy to read that! We noted that idea about a MIDI controller video ;)
And yes, we've started to rebalance educational videos vs marketing videos to offer you more resources to be inspired by your Osmose. And don't forget our e tips videos as well, they might be 1min long but you can still learn a lot from it: instagram.com/p/C84V1WstCXQ/
Wow, the single best demonstration I've ever seen of the Osmose. More, please, more!
Duly noted :)
Love my Osmose for all what it brings to the table like what we see on this video. Thanks Expressive E! 🇫🇷 ❤
Wow he is good. Definitely the best Osmose player I have seen till today.
it's funny cos it's so easy to play it even without being a professional...
@@leonnaffin Agreed, it’s great to see the instrument being played this well.
I always thought they would have moreso knocked the expressiveness out of the park if they added touch receptors where if you slide finger up the key, it does some sort of effect or modulation. Still pretty sweet though.
thanks for the advanced pedal technique, it really open a world of layering. Lot of fun ahead !
Superb tutorial of a great instrument. Deeply inspiring :)
Great tutorial. And, also some really excellent playing on the Osmose, very creative and expressive (wink.)
Wow this was amazing ! 🙌🏼
Awesome demonstrations Josh! Loved being next to your booth at superbooth
Thanks for being such a cool neighbour! :D
Thanks! Likewise my friend :). Excited to see your progress with Wiggler!
The unlimited and untapped possibilities are overwhelming....I bought mine a while ago , butr need to spend a lot more time experimenting with it.
Beautiful, Josh!
This format is amazing, I've found new techniques for my Osmose thanks to Josh !
This really goes to our heart! A lot of work and love was put into that video, as we're not that many in the marketing/product department. Bravo to Josh, who made that demo right after 4 days of trade show at NAMM. He nailed it.
We created that series to give practical tips for people to use expressiveness in all contexts: to us MPE is not a gimmick but an incredible medium for any musician to express themselves more easily! Shoot your ideas for Creative Tutorials to come, we're listening!
@@ExpressiveE i'll definitely will continue to support you guys, as a previous owner of a ToucheSE (and French also... so #proud). Let's stay in touch !
@@ExpressiveE if you want more good players ask @substan_music ...he will bring new genres to your palette and it will sound amazing
This is truly excellent.
Would you mind sharing which presets were used in the different examples? Were these out-of-the-box presets or some or all of them made by Josh? Would love a more detailed walk through for the advanced pedal mapping and the demo at the end.
We're gonna ask Josh right away!
Sure! These are all stock presets. I simply adjusted them (from the Osmose itself) to my liking.
Presets are:
- Pickope
- Replicants Dreams
- Tabec
- Outspoken
- Mild Kisses
- Tabec (again)
- Tabec (a third time)
- Vln Vla Cel Bass
- Replicants Dreams (again)
@@JOSHMADOFF thanks so much for this. 🙏🏻
This video is so inspiring. Love my osmose!
8:15 Holy FUCK this sounds so good...
Großartig. Danke!
Wonderful capture of "art" (form meets function) Thank you.
Please describe how you connect the Korg Kontol 2 to the Osmose. I see the MIDI cable coming out of the Osmose however the Korg Kontrol has a small USB input. Thanks in advance!
Thanks! I use a Doremidi UMH-10 to convert the USB midi from the Nanokontrol2 to 5-pin din (it aslo powers the nanokontrol2). However, if your midi controller has power of its own, you can just plug it directly into the Osmose (via the USB or the Midi DIN in). I prefer to leave the USB jack available for connecting with my DAW.
This is great ❤
Excellent!
I’m waiting for easy integration with Kontakt libraries or a company like spitfire or cinesamples to make some osmose specific libraries. Love my osmose though! Thanks for the great demo!
Great format! Amazing sound 🔥
All the stuff from the Continuucon presented in a concise way - great! What’s the sustain-looking pedal you use? Which sustain pedals would you recommend for a continuous CC message?
Thanks! For sustain, I recommend Yamaha FC3a, and I like the FC7 for expression. Both are continuous
Thank you from Bordeaux France
Avec plaisir!
Amazing playing man. Still not in love with Osmose’s internal sounds, but I hope it progresses.
This is amazing! Imho It would be helpful for tutorial videos like this to share the settings and patches chosen as there are a lot of sound design options which can change tonality and response. This effects the playing dynamics a lot as he discusses during the demo. Learning from copying sounds can be helpful to finding things that work, as the Osmose can get very abstract and out there. Thank you for putting this together. 🙏🙌
Also is he using eventide space?
@nashatkins8883 I was using a bit of the Eventide pedal in additon to the internal fx engine. Film composers tend to use multiple stages of reverb to add a little extra depth :)
Thanks! I left a comment with all of the presets used
@@JOSHMADOFF Thank you!!
🔥🔥🔥
Awesome! Could you share the preset names you used for each section?
We're gonna ask Josh right away!
Thanks!
Presets are:
- Pickope
- Replicants Dreams
- Tabec
- Outspoken
- Mild Kisses
- Tabec (again)
- Tabec (a third time)
- Vln Vla Cel Bass

How do you hold two chord with sustinuto, & play at the same time? Don’t the new notes get locked into the sustaining too?
With MPE, each new note opens a new midi channel. This allows the Osmsoe to recognize which notes are being held by sostenuto, leaving the rest of the keyboard free to play on the remaining channels (without getting grabbed up by the sustain).
Question, what preset are you using during the "Discovering & Mixing Playing Gestures" section?
Just added a comment with timecodes for all the presets I used :)
any way to save pedal settings globally for all presets, I want sostenuto as default now :D
Good question! Yes you can. Using the Haken Editor, click the gear in the top right corner and open "Midi and Global Settings". Then on the left side where it says "Pedals: Replace" click that and change it to "Pedals: Preserve"
How long until you guys make a larger one?! I really want to buy one, but I need more than 4 octaves.
Nice vid, thanks !
But... how do you midi link the Osmose to the nanokontrol ?
@@JOSHMADOFF thanks a lot for your answer !
So UBS B to Micro USB... ? never seen that kind of cable but it's a good tip to know :-)
@johnjohnpetterson8428 that cable would work, however, the Osmose won't power the NanoKontrol2, so you would be better off sending it into something that both powers it and gives you either Midi DIN or USB midi out. Doremidi makes another box called the DUH-10 that does the same thing for usb midi
Is Josh running the Osmose through the Eventide Space? If so, how much reverb is being applied to each of these patches?
In general, not too much reverb. Some of what you're hearing is the room sound. However, adding a second reverb (in addition to the internal fx engine) is a great way to add an extra dimension to the sound. In film scoring, we tend to use multiple reverbs for most things.
@@JOSHMADOFF thanks for the quick reply! I'm a big fan of the Space. Great pedal. The video was awesome and I learned a bunch. Do you suggest turning up the sensitivity like you did at the beginning for most cases?
@davesterling5106 Thanks! In many cases, I turn the pressure sensitivity up all the way as it opens up things that are only possible with that setting, but it's also true the other way around (for example playing super percussively with low sensitivity). In general, I like to think of the sensitivity and pitch bend settings as sources of sound design/synthesis rather than a set calibration.
Any chance of getting the presets used in this video? I love my Osmose, but learning the Haken editor is rough. I noticed he has some presets that aren’t in the factory list.
I used all factory presets for this :) I just adjusted them (inside the Osmose) to my liking. In a future video I will demonstrate how to easily load presets onto the Osmose, and I'll include a download link to all of my personalized presets.
@@JOSHMADOFF that’d be awesome. Thanks!
Nice format and glad you guys are finally making these, looking forward to see more! especially the silent note in the arp was a nice new trick for me to use
and since this video is about improving playing i made a short tutorial about that myself as well with some tips&tricks if people are looking for more, especially my (free) preset might come in handy ruclips.net/video/YqWwvnNnxsQ/видео.htmlsi=6o_DhpoQB5eEPwhU
😎
Can it emulate a piano sound or no?
Excellent!
